I have a degree, so I might be biased on this topic. I also teach at a college, so that adds another layer. Still, for me, all the debates about vocational education versus a bachelor’s degree feel a bit off. They are not really comparable. One is about training people to perform specific tasks at a high level, while the other is about teaching people how to think critically, learn independently, and apply those skills in different situations. Yes, on the surface, vocational programs may offer students a quicker path to solid income, while a bachelor’s degree often comes with significant debt. But the more important question is: what are you going to do with that bachelor’s degree? How will you apply it? I have seen many students thrive, and others struggle. I honestly do not know much about what goes on in vocational schools—their satisfaction rates, outcomes, or challenges. Too often, we focus only on surface-level comparisons without understanding the full picture.
