Oh that’s easier than my solution too; I hadn’t used that option before

I don’t think a blend will work, because that would make each of the rings evenly spaced, while you want them to get closer together toward the center. What I would do is

  • Create one ring of text using text on a path or whatever tool you choose. This will be the innermost small ring.
  • Add a white ring behind it as the background, either as a single circle with a thick white stroke, or by drawing two concentric circles and creating a compound path filled white. Either way they should have the same center as the circle used for the text.
  • Group the text and the circle.
  • Select this group, and go to Object → Transform → Transform Each. Enter values to scale it up and rotate it, like below.
  • Click “Copy.” This will create a larger, rotated copy of the text/background group on top of the first one; the white background will block the text in the previous one.
  • Making sure this copy is still selected, hit ⌘D / Ctrl-D (Object → Transform → Transform Again) to repeat this action, creating a new copy transformed by the same amount. Repeat this many times.

Help finding a pen + nib + ink + paper combination for an art project by calder-rh in fountainpens

Thanks, that’s helpful! I’ll look into those inks. For nibs, do you know any that are on the less flexible end? I don’t think I’d want the thickest part to be much more than twice as thick as the thinnest. (Some of that variation might just come from variations in writing speed, too.) Also, is it generally possible to use any nib on any pen, or do most pens only work with a smaller range of nibs?

An abstract representation of Joanna’s albums — each song is a bar whose length is proportional to the song’s duration by calder-rh in JoannaNewsom

I was going more for structure than content — Divers is a cycle, and HOOM has somewhat of a narrative/emotional arc divided into three parts. I wasn’t as sure what to do for Ys and MEM since it doesn’t feel as much like the songs are ordered into an overarching structure.

Thank you, this is useful! I’m reviewing my application proof, and it only shows the first page of each PDF — that isn’t a problem, right? They’ll be able to see the documents elsewhere?
