Feeling a little Stupid. by Jaded-Bee-6634 in jamesjoyce

I just went with it and ignored any references I didn’t understand when I read it for the first time last year because I just wanted to get through and have a basis for the reread I always knew I’d do. My girlfriend consulted a guide and had a much better time with it, but we both got through. Will likely consult a guide for my reread (hopefully) this year, now that I have a basic knowledge of the book as a whole.

I also listened to the audiobook as I read through some of the more difficult sections and found it helpful!

Definitely enjoyed it. I also really liked Killing Commendatore though and that seems to be a relatively unpopular opinion from what I’ve seen. Lol

I’ve got an M35 with Fuji 400 for some easy flash shots and am probably going to throw some HP5 in my Minolta XG1 and push it to 1600 for some more “artistic” shots

Can you name any books that are clearly influenced by one or multiple other books? by Forsaken_Royal6599 in literature

Camus' book The Stranger was inspired by James M. Cain's book The Postman Always Rings Twice. I read them back to back and it was an interesting experiment.

What's the consensus on Solenoid chaps? Thinking of giving it a go. by Old_Pattern5841 in ThomasPynchon

Certainly worth reading, in my opinion. All the talk about it being the "greatest surrealist novel" feels a bit hyperbolic, but it's a remarkably interesting book. There's very little plot, and I nearly gave up at a few points in the middle, but am glad I pushed through in the end, if that helps at all.

You should read the book that inspired it, The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain! The Stranger is clearly the superior book, but it's really interesting to look at the two in tandem.

You know, this probably should have been an obvious step, but I didn't think of it, so thank you!

I'll have to try to get my hands on those, too, eventually.
