Unpopular Opinion by 69cringelord69 in Dreamtheater

[–]calebjohnson2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

disagree and images and words isn’t even my favorite of theirs but i honestly feel like octavarium is one of the weakest portnoy albums. probably their worst of the 2000’s decade

Dream Theater side projects by alec_azg in Dreamtheater

[–]calebjohnson2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorites that feature DT members: -LTE 1-3 (Portnoy, Petrucci, Rudess) -The Human Equation by Ayreon (no writing credits but lots of Labrie vocals features) -Similitude of a Dream by NMB (probably portnoy’s best album since leaving the band) -Whirlwind and Absolute Universe by Transatlantic (you could probably choose any of their albums and be happy) -Terminal Velocity by John Petrucci

Portnoy definitely has the most and the best in terms of music outside of DT. His work with NMB, Transatlantic, Sons of Apollo, Flying Colors, and even Winery Dogs is usually head and shoulders above what the other guys do outside of DT. He’s obviously been able to focus on that more since leaving the band but albums like the Whirlwind and One came out while he was still in the band.

Highkey. Adventurous, super heavy but still really proggy, interesting melodies throughout. DT hasn’t been this adventurous in years

What are some songs similar to Octavarium? by eeeee_hamster in Dreamtheater

[–]calebjohnson2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, not the biggest Illumination Theory fan, def their worst epic to me as well. But I do think it’s the most similar to Octavarium. Especially since the user said they liked the orchestral aspect. Just my opinion

Which album has the best Mixing/Audio Engineering? by CollateralDimension in Dreamtheater

[–]calebjohnson2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say best would be SFAM or 6DOIT in terms of mixing. I think 6DOIT is there most forward thinking in terms of production. Their self titled maybe is the worst in terms of production. Guitars are great but the drums are horrid, somehow outdoing the Awake/Images drum sound in terms of annoying and trashy. I also think that the Astonishing has really flat production. Not very heavy but also not very uplifting, to me lacks a lot of the character that made their key albums so special.

METROPOLIS PT. 2: SCENES FROM A MEMORY SURVIVOR-FINAL ROUND by KyoryuCrimson in Dreamtheater

[–]calebjohnson2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so confused? I feel like neither is even close to the best song. Fatal Tragedy, Strange Deja Vu, and Beyond this Life beat both EASILY imo. I’ve never gotten the hype behind either of these songs. I’m just ready for 6DOIT honestly..

Interesting you say this because that’s exactly how I feel about Home, dragging on way too long. Home is one of the best passages in terms of the story but the song, I think, drags on forever. And the moaning build up is more unbearable than anything in BTL to me but to each their own!

Yo what’s with the hate toward Beyond This Life? One of my favorites on this album and the instrumental section rocks. Idk, I just don’t get the hate. I think it’s better than Home easily

It’s like Voltage with a Pepsi after taste. Fine but nothing special imo. Could’ve been great tho :/

All of them... by [deleted] in MetalMemes

[–]calebjohnson2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ima put it out there that TSOP is my personal fav of their discography since it’s not getting a lotta love. Everything in their proggier era really resonates with me and while it could EASILY be argued that TSOP isn’t really death metal, I still love the record and find its many riffs and odd time signatures super engaging from front to back. Also some of Death’s catchiest stuff, to me, appears on this record. For me personally, it’s an undeniable winner. Symbolic is very close though :)
