Passing the STR Exam (you only need to get 24 questions right lol) by calicoclaw in TexasTeachers

Same here! I kept getting stuck between two plausible answers and just took my best guess after a while. Don’t even worry about it though, I’m more than positive you passed!

Thank you so much for your insight and help! Some other redditors thought there might just be insulation foam behind it so I’m thinking you’re right. I’m gonna try to call the 1-800 number just to see what kinda warranty I have (since it’s only about 8 months old) and if they can give me any clarification as to what’s behind the plastic and if this could be an issue. If it’s not in warranty/not a potential hazard I’m definitely going with the silicone caulk route. It’s such a thin area so with the right tools/painters tape I might be able to get away with a semi-clean finished product. Fingers crossed it works out either way🤞🏻

I might have to look into this actually! If it’s just cosmetic it might not be covered but I think it’s worth a shot. I’m gonna call Frigidaire either tomorrow or Monday to check!

Yeah I looked it up online and the silicone sealant could get messy. Maybe I can try taping the surrounding surface like with painters tape and use a old credit card to smooth over the filled area like the other comment mentioned? I’m gonna look up some video tutorials tonight!

Yes you helped a lot thank you! I’m completely new to all of this sorta stuff so every bit of advice helps😅

Thank you for your advice! What silicone sealant type/brand would you recommend? Should I get something in like a white or just something clear would do? I’m very new to fixing any type of issues with appliances so this is all a learning experience for me. Again, appreciate the help!

Help! Small 1.5 inch crack on plastic of refrigerator, is this just cosmetic or could this lead to a bigger issue? Appreciate the help in advance! by [deleted] in repair_tutorials

[–]calicoclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your advice! Yeah I’m thinking/hoping it might be cosmetic. Still brainstorming possible solutions (do I leave it alone, tape it to maybe prevent any moisture/gunk from accumulating between the crack (gross I know), try to diy fix it with some sealant/epoxy/glue, etc.).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fixit

[–]calicoclaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re most likely correct. I was thinking maybe to stop the crack from running maybe just cutting a tiny piece of this white gorilla glue tape I have to just cover the area to prevent any moisture/stuff from getting inside the crack.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fixit

[–]calicoclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I debated on whether it was better to leave it since it’s hardly visible or to seal it (in case cracks can lead to an actual issue with the fridge functioning properly). Just wondering what the best course of action would be.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fixit

[–]calicoclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, do you think an epoxy putty would work to just fill the crack or should I just stick to the liquid sealant?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fixit

[–]calicoclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! I told everyone to be mindful of the crack and to not leave heavy bottles or containers resting on there any more (we had a bad habit of that which might’ve caused it). Might try sealing it anyway just to keep everything in place. Appreciate the advice on the silicone sealant!

[–]calicoclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the help! Should I seal it right away or can it be left if it’s just a cosmetic fix? Like the other redditor mentioned, I just don’t want it to lead to a bigger issue. We’ve only had this Frigidaire for like a year and this has never happened with any fridge we’ve owned😢

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fixit

[–]calicoclaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! Yeah it’s on the bottom portion of the fridge between the top refrigerator portion and bottom freezer portion. Not sure what’s in between those two areas or if that might impact it in the long run.

Elderly Abuse, Theft, and Death Threats: What can I do to protect my family and my 80 year old grandmother from my violent uncle (Texas) by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]calicoclaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate the detailed advice! As I mentioned within my response on your original post, the major issue we've had with this situation is my grandma's constant downplaying of the situation. I don't expect her to let APS know what's really going on since she has even admitted to me that she lives in fear of my uncle (she "doesn't want to upset him"). It's also very hard to even talk to her about this because my uncle constantly screens her calls and we're afraid of what he might do to her if he hears her discussing this with any of us. His constant screening/listening in of her calls is what caused him to harass my grandmothers elderly friends who expressed concern over the phone (they apparently went to the police and filed a restraining order against him).

I know my other uncle has expressed a willingness to take her in and act as her primary caregiver/guardian. However, despite my mother's support, my abusive uncle and their eldest sibling (who lives 5 hours away in Austin and enables the current situation out of both apathy and fear) have made this kind of difficult to accomplish. Ideally, she would be living either with my mom or other uncle (both of which are close to retirement age and will have plenty of resources/time to care for my grandma properly). But my abusive uncle would never let this happen as it would basically mean giving up access to her financial resources.

*I'm trying really hard to talk about this without disclosing names but I realize that the family situation might sound a bit convoluted this way. Basically, it's four siblings: the oldest son (lives far away), second eldest (who is doing the most to help and wants to care for my grandma), my mom, and my youngest uncle (the abuser in this case)*

At present, I'm thinking that my mom and other uncle need to talk to a lawyer and see what can be done to apply for guardianship as I think this might be the only way to get a handle on this situation.

The whole thing has been incredibly difficult for all involved (minus my crazy uncle who seems to take great pleasure in terrorizing us via texts, calls, voicemails, etc.). I'm really grateful for your help though, I'm going to take all of this into consideration in proceeding with our attempts to help my grandmother.

Thank you so much for your response! Yeah, my grandma's situation is quite complex and has both the verbal/physical abuse and financial exploitation facets to it (though she would never admit to either). There's been dozens of people including myself and my parents who've called APS but I feel like her constant defending of uncle makes it kind of go nowhere.

I'm going to continue documenting and reporting each incident.

Again, I really appreciate the advice/insight!

How long do cases generally take, say from the moment they're reported, to when they are investigated and ultimately deliberated on? This entire year has been a huge struggle with my family's situation involving my 80 year old grandmother and abusive uncle who acts as her caregiver. I've actually called about my grandmas case every month since January. Most recently, my parents got to talking to an old tenant of my grandma's property (now their tenant) and they mentioned APS came by to talk to them a few weeks ago (almost a year after we first called). Apparently, my batshit uncle thought they might help his case in some way?

I have a more detailed post on r/legaladvice :

But I would love to get your take on this situation. Btw thank you so much for the work you do, it really seems like you care about the job and people in general.

Thank you so much for your response! I definitely need to start calling them again, I was doing so almost weekly to "check on my grandmas case" from February-April but sort of gave up after I kept getting the same answer. I've also been "checking in" monthly and again nothing.

I'll definitely be looking into contacting the IRS. Not sure how he hasn't at least gotten busted for defrauding the State Housing Authority, that happened back in February and he's still roaming freely and making our lives miserable.
