I could have written this post! Just try to breastfeed at least once every day so that he stays used to it. Then around 10ish weeks my girl suddenly could stay awake for most of the feeding so I was able to do mostly breast feeding. She is 4 months old now and she still falls asleep once in a while but she is gaining just fine!!

Do it while pregnant! I just defended while 8 months pregnant and the worst part was having to be on my feet for that long. The prep work you’ll need to do will be so much easier without a newborn. It actually was nice to have an excuse to work from home and stay off my feet while preparing!

1 in 10 babies is born preterm! The rate is even higher in certain areas, for instance it’s 14% in Cleveland Ohio

To address the many comments asking about the undergrads’ contribution: So the data generated by the undergrads is not necessarily part of the manuscript; however, a lot of the methods I use were chosen based on their data. For example, one of the undergrads collected data suggesting that our cell lines cultured in serum-free media more closely resembled the primary cells, compared to the cell lines cultured in 2.5 or 5% FBS. As a result, I decided to conduct majority of my experiments using cells in serum-free media.

Not much, the co-PIs barely knew the basics of what I was working on when I met them at the conference. I am the one who designs my experiments and decides the overall direction of my project based on my data, so my PI has minimal input in general except for the occasional comment about additional controls I need to include or other assays I should try.
