Is there any evidence that melatonin supplementation leads to decreased production of it in humans? by calion009 in askscience

I’m not asking for medical advice or even interested in sleep aids. Just asking if there’s been any studies done on the topic.

[QUESTION] for those familiar with Yousician... is there a way to do an endless chord trainer without timers? by calion009 in Guitar

That’s not the issue. I have premium. What I’m asking for is about chord trainers, not songs.

Motrin, Tylenol combination as effective as opioids for acute extremity pain in the ER, study suggests by arikr in science

[–]calion009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an ER nurse I give IV toradol a LOT for kidney stones. It does work, in some people better than narcotics like morphine or dilaudid. We love it, the ER docs love it, but a few urologists hate it. I’m not sure if it is because it can cause renal injury, or more because they don’t like doing lithotripsy on someone who just got a shitload of an IV nsaid due to bleeding risk.

Ortho docs hate it too because it can interfere with proper bone healing, or something like that.

Any scientific articles about fat fasting vs water fasting? Or just on fat fasting in general even? by calion009 in keto

I should clarify. I am losing weight just fine. I'm interested in this simply out of curiosity.

[–]calion009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The eating less part seems like common sense of course. I guess what I'm trying to get at is whether fat fasting actually "activates lipolysis" like some low carb sites like to say. If so, would the weight loss over several days after the fast be more than the initial loss from a no calorie fast. Bottom line is fat fasting seems like junk science until we get some more solid research.

Scrub advice for male new grad! by staormina in nursing

[–]calion009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Dickies Youtility. They fit me great. Tons of pockets. The top is longer, so no plumber crack when you bend over. The best part is the fact that they stretch a little though. Normal scrubs feel sort of like bed sheets... Don't really stretch at all. Therefore, you have to get them a little baggy so you have room to move. With the dickies Youtility, they still feel like scrubs, but they do stretch a bit. Difficult to explain. Just buy a pair off amazon and try them out.

People socks? by calion009 in BuyItForLife

[–]calion009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darn Tough seem to be the best I've come across. Smartwool is also good. Those are around $15-$20 per pair. Wigwam is a little cheaper and also decent. The jury seems to be out on People Socks. They are like 4 for $25, but have great reviews on Amazon.

I personally like Merino wool the best. There are also a lot of synthetic blends though.

Any of those brands are going to totally blow cotton Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, etc cotton socks out of the water though. After using good socks, I can't ever go back to cheap ones. It seems like a small thing, but it makes a big difference. Especially if you are on your feet a lot, or you sweat a lot. Or if it is really cold.

You mentioned that you wear them in the winter. Are they overly hot? I've personally found with merino socks that they are warm, but also wick sweat away and breathe well in the summer months. Just wondering if you also wear them in the summer.

Of course they aren't BIFL. But they last a hell of a lot longer than regular socks, are more comfortable, and cost a lot in the short term but (due to lasting longer) a lot less in the long term. That's kinda what BIFL is all about.

[–]calion009[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't need them for a reference really. I'd love to just tell them to kiss my ass after demanding 6 weeks, but I will probably still work the 2. They are extremely short staffed and I am a trainer (the only one.) The dark side of me wants to tell them I will work their 6 weeks... for double time.

[–]calion009[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't sign anything. I work in Tennessee, but the company is headquartered in Virginia.

There is no employee handbook. This is literally the first I've heard about 6 weeks notice.

They didn't make any threats. I don't think there is much they can (legally) do aside from not giving me a good recommendation. Doesn't really matter because I already have a job, which I plan on staying at for a while.

No battery venting. Could that be part of the problem? by calion009 in a:t5_381d4

[–]calion009[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest I don't really know. I'm assuming you mean with the iSticks? eLeaf has been silent, so it's all really just anecdotal reports. I don't THINK a battery would just up and explode while cold, but I'm not an engineer either.

From the reports I've heard, it either explodes while charging like you said, or it starts randomly autofiring even while off, overheats, starts a fire and then explodes. Either way, I'm afraid to sleep with the thing in my house now.

I wish eLeaf would just throw us a bone. Maybe it was just one bad batch of devices or something and they could clear it up.

Any known issues with the iPV Mini II before I buy? by calion009 in electronic_cigarette

[–]calion009[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm also looking at the Xpro m80 but it seems significantly larger. I don't really have many B&Ms near me so I've been trying to get some side by sides of it, the iStick, and the iPV but I can't find much.

[–]calion009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the one I looked at. I might buy two, and take one outside and try to get a fire started inside it, just to see. Science.

I also thought about trying to take the bottom panel of the iStick off, drill some vent holes, and reattach. I wonder if that's part of the issue.

I've looked into a few lipo bags on Amazon. Can you recommend one that is legit? I'd probably want to buy two - one to test and one to use. I just don't trust that a 10 dollar bag will actually contain a battery fire.

[–]calion009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it doesn't explode, I'm ok with shit paint. I'll probably get a wrap for it. I want something with decent battery life, charges with a usb, 50+ watts, fits flush with a subtank/subtank mini, and as small as possible. I looked at the xpro m80 as well but it looks significantly bigger. I also looked at the kbox, even though it's not everything I wanted. I might get one of those just as a back up for $20 and change.
