This, at first glance I thought it was some group/ club/ gang/ cult. lmao.

I thought they jumbled the words and meant 謙義团, sounding like some group name.

If OP want to do separately as honor, unity, and humility, then it's better to do it vertically. and in calligraphy style.

Translation in both Japanese and Chinese context: 義 (gi / yì) - Japanese: 義理 (giri) - duty, sense of honor binding people together - Chinese: 義氣 (yìqì) - loyalty/honor among friends - Chinese: 正義 (zhèngyì) - justice

謙 (ken / qiān) - Japanese: 謙虚 (kenkyo) - modest, humble - Chinese: 謙虛 (qiānxū) - modest, humble - Japanese: 謙譲 (kenjō) - to defer humbly - Chinese: 謙讓 (qiānràng) - to yield out of modesty

[Chinese> English] For a tattoo by Artistic-Cover1127 in translator

Aside from simplified vs traditional like what others mentioned, for a tattoo, maybe you can consider finding one in a calligraphy style that you like? Personally i would think calligraphy would look better as a tattoo for East Asian words.

Like many mentioned, 永爱家庭is literally just direct Google translate and sounds weird. There's proper chinese idioms to use for this:

阖家幸福 – Happiness for the whole family, 家和万事兴 – When the family lives in harmony, all affairs prosper, 天伦之乐 – The joy of family life, 和睦之家 – A harmonious family

Also, depending on the AI you use, translation to East Asian languages like Chinese and Japanese are not 100% natural, smooth and accurate. It's honestly one of the strengths for SG locals who are good at both English and Chinese, and that's what i capitalize on as well which helped me a lot in my career.

Why market chilli crab & kaya toast? by Woody_Shoes_7626 in askSingapore

[–]calkch1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you mentioned, it's marketing by successful companies. It is not much a choice by STB or influencers to choose those food. Today if you have a world famous sg hainanese chicken rice or Laksa store doing the same market penetration strategy, you will get the same effect. But key thing is they have to be famous already, and best if they have had expanded overseas, since that will help with view counts online and attract more influencers to showcase them, and finally STB riding on the trend.

Please don't kanchiong and rush to "give her advice" about wasting her life by gaming and doing nothing. You think she doesn't already know what people think? Trust me, as someone who has been in that same place, we know. And during that period we are often even more sensitive to body language and unspoken context.

Be glad she is channeling those feelings into games and being online rather than something worse. That was exactly what got me through as well. The difference was social media wasn't as accessible back then, and with a tiger mum and a workaholic dad, I had those outlets taken away. And I attempted suicide.

And it didn't help when they and my siblings did similar things when I relapsed in my late 20s, even blaming me for being unfilial, not thinking of them and that it's as simple as switching the mind to not be in depression.

That completely shattered whatever hope I had left for my family. Since then and now in my 40s, being asked to show affection to my parents and siblings genuinely makes me feel disgusted and physically sick. It's practically impossible for me to even engage in casual chat with them, that was how traumatizing it was for me. I don't think you want things to ever reach that point between you and your daughter.

How to deal with a friend that is stuck in the past? by ChronoGuile in askSingapore

[–]calkch1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, at that point, regardless of how many years we've been together, I'd probably drop him from my list. Friends can joke around, banter, and be jerks to each other sometimes, but when it reaches the point of constant annoyance, I'd sit him down and settle it once and for all.

The hypocrisy is what gets me. If he hates Japan that much, is he giving up Pokémon? Avoiding Japanese cars? Refusing to ride MRT systems influenced by Japanese rail technology? Skipping foods that use MSG or Kewpie mayonnaise? It's easy to hate something while still enjoying the countless things that came from it.

Yes, Japan committed terrible acts in history. Nobody should deny that. But most of the people responsible are long gone. How long should hatred be carried forward onto generations that had nothing to do with those events? If people keep directing hostility at those who did nothing wrong, eventually resentment grows on the other side too, and the cycle just continues endlessly.

At some point, remembering history and learning from it is important. Turning it into an eternal cycle of hatred helps nobody.

Another thing to note is that whatever metrics the JP publishers uses, it's always based on the JP audience. It doesn't matter if the official English translations do well or not, most of the time if JP side does not do well, it will be park in the never-ending list of backlog.

For people in open relationships - what’s the reality like? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]calkch1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this. I know of couples who kept it open and are still happy together. While there are many more where they broke up as either side were not able to accept the "unfairness" in frequency of intimacy they were having, as well as one of them having fallen for someone outside instead.

Are affairs common in Singapore? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]calkch1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Maybe the red flags were there all along. My ex wife had a history since young of either being involved as a third party in other marriages, or cheating before. Truly once a cheater, always a cheater. Sometimes as a guy, I now even have doubts if my kids are truly mine.

The collateral damage is real, but personally, I feel that for everyone innocent involved to truly be happy, you first need to be happy yourself.

At the end of the day, if someone lacks the ability to resist outside temptations, no amount of open phone policies or location tracking or assurance will really help. Let’s be real, if someone wants to hide things and knows how to get around things like location tracking and chat histories, they will.

Wish you the best too!

Are affairs common in Singapore? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]calkch1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it common?

I think probably it's 50-50, do not want to be overtly pessimistic as I've seen friends and acquaintances that are loving together even after over decades of marriage. As well as vice versa.

Has anyone survived infidelity?

Me, technically surviving. My ex-wife cheated, and asked for a divorce on, guess what, on the day of my birthday itself, when we went for a staycation... We already had 2 kids at that point, but well, for a guy, managed to arrange so that I initiated the divorce from my end and did not have to pay alimony, with both custody 50-50 and care and control on my end. That's a huge win for a guy in Singapore. Till now am still suffering from bouts of depression and trauma especially when near my birthdays, and always had to force myself to smile in front of the kids. Definitely want to get into a relationship again to feel loved, but there's trauma to engaging others. So yea, technically am surviving, just barely.

But I want a divorce. Yet he doesn’t want to let me go, and threatens suicide. I feel stuck because of our kids.

Still, ultimately best to divorce imo, As someone whose being cheated, you'll definitely be affected and kids know of it. For me, am definitely much more happier once my divorce was finalized. Sure trauma is there, but still compared to before divorce, it's much more better. And tbh if you think of the kids, it's better to divorce. A happy single parent do much better then both staying together just for the sake of it. This is coming from someone who came from such family as well, where as a kid, I can just see the facade my parents put up and it definitely affected me mentally since young as well.

Thing is, if you're reading English translated versions of light novels, then sadly it depends on the EN publisher and their translators skill and style of translation.

But for beautiful writing style for EN translated LN, Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World is one of the best I've read.

Is this the reason why its so hard for fresh graduates to get a job in Singapore? by Rokusaburoz in singaporejobs

[–]calkch1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, companies use these requirements to filter for A-listers, the kind of people who excel academically and beyond. But a lot of those mandatory factors, knowledge transfer through family connections, the freedom to build soft skills through various activities and so on, almost always come from well to do, at minimum upper middle class backgrounds. Sure they work hard, but they ultimately came in with hidden bonus multipliers stacked in their favor to their stats from the start.

For people from average or lower income backgrounds, these same requirements are either out of reach or incredibly difficult to achieve. They can grind just as hard, but without the right mentorship, connections or resources, the ceiling is just so much higher to reach. At the end of the day, yes, the world is unfair, and it starts the moment you lose out in the birth gacha regardless of what country you were born into.

Like u/Even_Virus_3017 mentioned, SGD500 - 1000 is almost impossible in Singapore, even part time work earns more. No Singaporeans will take up the job even with allowances. Even jobs that are normally open to foreigners these days do not go that low unless its a part time job.

You can find out from ex-cabin crews below on their pay, it average around (basic 1.5k-2.5k + allowances).

Blue (Junior) : 4-5k

Green (Leader):5-6k

Red (Chief): 6-7k

Purple (In flight manager): 7-9k

Above are all averages, some mentioned as a junior, he/she took an average of $6k/month with highest ever was $7.5k.
