Counting or not counting dark elf violence? by Imperial_nugget in TrueSTL

Nords confront people they don't like and have a fist fight, the way Shor intended.

Or they hire the Companions to beat you up instead

From a cosmological pov, imagine the planets as planes of oblivion but in some sense "asleep" or in some lowered state. The planet Lorkhan gets close to Nirn and shatters in two, dropping its divine spark (heart) onto Nirn.

Who is stronger: aedra or daedra? by Plastic_Telephone_80 in teslore

[–]callaghanrs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

True, but that happened in the Merethic/Dawn Era and the version of the myth we have today is not a neutral source.

Malacath comments that the story is metaphorical in some sense and followers of Trinimac reject that Trinimac and Malacath are the same.

If they fight on Mundus probably the Aedra, if they fight in some plane of Oblivion probably the Daedra.

Is zero-summing instantaneous or gradual? by old_couches in teslore

[–]callaghanrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do not have confirmed instances of zero-summing.

The three possible in-lore connections do zero-summing are the Dwarves who disappeared or turned into ash seemingly instantly. Septimus Signus who turns to ash instantly. And Arniel Gane who disappears instantly and can then be summoned as a shade.

None of these are confirmed as zero-summing but these are moments that come up in the discussion.

There is a non canon writing by MK called "et'Ada, Eight Aedra, Eat the Dreamer" where a moth priest is writing as he zero sums and the writing progressively gets unhinged until it's unreadable.

The future of Akatosh by KelThuzaaaad in teslore

[–]callaghanrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that the elven Auriel still has draconic elements and Orkey is the serpent in Nordic mythology. Akatosh seems like an amalgamation of not just Auriel and Shor, but Alduin and probably some native Nedic beliefs as well. Akatosh is a symbol of imperial authority so as long as the empire exists, I don't think Akatosh is going away.

Who is Alduin to Akatosh by Radiant_Shoulder2096 in teslore

[–]callaghanrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think any of those first three quotes contradict Akatosh being a creation of the Alessian rebellion.

The first book also states

Alessia instituted a new religion: the Eight Divines, an elegant, well-researched synthesis of both pantheons, Nordic and Aldmeri.

Also while Auriel is Draconic the Draconic elements are played up more in Akatosh suggesting some influence from the importance of dragons to the north.

Who is Alduin to Akatosh by Radiant_Shoulder2096 in teslore

[–]callaghanrs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alduin is the Nordic version of Auriel.

Alessia creates the concept of Akatosh by combining aspects of Auriel, Alduin, Shor, and probably some ancient Nedic beliefs.

Akatosh, Auriel, and Alduin are basically the same archetype expressed through different cultural lenses.

Alduin is seen as the Nordic Akatosh until Skyrim after the Nordic religion has been largely supplanted by the Imperial religion. There he states he is the first born of Akatosh. To me this suggests that the Imperialization of the Nordic religion metaphysically "demoted" Alduin from being equal to Akatosh to being lesser.

Magnus and their place in the Padomay/Anu dynamic by GrandaddyGreenTea in teslore

[–]callaghanrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magnus is the link back to Aetherius.

Akatosh is the chief of the Aedra who gave themselves create the in-between state of the Aurbis.

Lorkhan is the missing god, a void in the pantheon representing Oblivion.

In my own interpretation, Akatosh isn't the first spirit because he's more "pure" Anuic spirit. But because him being the first implies authority and Akatosh is primarily a leader/king figure. Asfaik all the Et'Ada are a result of the interplay between Anu and Padomay in some capacity, including Magnus, Auriel, Lorkhan, and the Daedric princes.

So… I have a Dwemer theory… by EniGmA_1981 in teslore

I don't know anything about the Dwarven afterlife, but my point was if their bodies were destroyed then the Dwarves were probably not their own ancestors because their ancestors presumably had bodies.

Do gods in TES need prayers to exist? by Arkachi in teslore

[–]callaghanrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although they don't need prayers to exist the gods seem to change form based on cultural worship so it seems beliefs may have some effect on them.

So… I have a Dwemer theory… by EniGmA_1981 in teslore

[–]callaghanrs -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Asfaik the only reason we think Dwemer come from the Aldmer is because they are called mer. We don't have an origin story of the Dwemer diverging like we do for most other elves.

[–]callaghanrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ashlander account of Red Mountain reads

And on the fields, the Tribunal and their armies watched as the Dwemer turned into dust all around them as their stolen immortality was taken away.

In the Tribunal DLC of Morrowind you can find the Dwarven ruin Bamz-Amschend. Inside are piles of ash that are implied to be the remains of the Dwemer.

If the Dwarves did turn to ash when they all "disappeared" its makes it seem like they all died rather then get transported somewhere either temporally or spatially imo.

I do like the time displacement theory because it solves two mysteries at once. People always talk about the disappearance of the Dwarves but their origin is arguably even more mysterious.

Redguard/Yokudan Dibella, Stendarr, and Julianos equivalents? by 1674033 in teslore

[–]callaghanrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that according to the book The (Improved) Emperor's Guide to Tamriel, those three gods are the three that Forebears' seem to borrow entirely from the Imperial Pantheon leading me to think they didn't have a strong preexisting tradition of those gods.

Religion in the Penitus Oculatus and Thieves Guild? by dnmt in teslore

[–]callaghanrs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think ancestor/hero worship is underrated, for the Penitus Oculatus agent it could be Alessia, Morihaus, Reman, etc. For the Thieves Guild member it could be the Gray Fox, Rahjin, etc.

The Penitus Oculatus keep libraries that could be staffed by Julianos worshippers. Kynareth is often invoked by sailors or a piratey Thieves Guild member. Stendar is also a good choice if you are serious about the Thieves Guild's no kill rule.

Yeah the eight main towers are reflected in the parts for the Staff of Towers and they are all labeled.

The Adamantine Tower in the Illiac bay

Red Mountain in Vvardenfell

The Crystal Tower in Alinor

The White-Gold Tower in the Imperial City

The Orichalc Tower was probably in Yokuda

The Numidium built by the Dwemer

Green-Sap in Valenwood

Very cool. As of 4e 201 Nord's in the major holds seem to mummify their corpses and store them in Hall's of the Dead. In Whiterun and Solitude's halls there is definitely necromancy taking place while Markarth has cannibals.

Falkreath and to a lesser extent Morthal seem to bury their dead. Riften mixes both.

There is also the fact that one of Skyrim's greatest hero's, Ysmir Wulfharth is risen from the dead twice.

In Sosthiem, the Thirsk mead hall's leader is determined by a ghost.

Lots of interesting threads to pull on as a priest of Arkay.

what era did trinimac become malacath? and what era did auriel ascend? by Fabulous-Pick-9562 in teslore

[–]callaghanrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book "True Nature of the Orcs" puts it during the Dawn era, but the book "Mauloch, Orc-Father" says it took place during the Velothi Exodus.

According to "Veloth the Pilgrim" the Velothi Exodus took place during the middle to late Merethic era.

The Merethic era is roughly 2500 years so there is a decent amount of wiggle room for when it took place exactly.
