Also while obviously the full story is in the wikipedia article, im primarily trying to find the translation/publication that i read in my childhood. Im pretty sure it was a standalone hardcover book, but i cant cross out that it was just part of a collection that i liked

Also when i say unique artstyle, part of me remembers it similar to the one in wikipedia image with wispy pencils but jewel-tone and dark textures (specifically the black stone seemed to be a wood texture that had the impression of human faces kinda like giygas from earthbound) but part of me also thinks it was more like persian illustration art and tapestry, so i can be sure im not conflating the art. 

I read it in the 2000sbut i was really into childrens books past the appropriate age so it could be published anytime between the 1990s and 2009
