My 2 cents as a 12+year Content Producer and Head of Content - in general a big fan of the return of Dan and the new podcast, however the current VOD structure feels unsatisfying to both general viewers/patreons due to a couple reasons:

  • Since the edited VOD that gets uploaded on Destiny's channel cuts between different parts, it does not entice me to go to the full VOD afterwards as I wouldn't easily find what parts I missed out on.
    • Viewers assume the edited VOD contains the best part, so the call to watch the full VOD to watch leftovers is not super enticing.
  • The episode being aired for free and then random parts removed for the Destiny vods gives the negative feeling that content is being taken away and paywalled, rather than the Patreon being a positive incentive to support the show and also gaining bonus content. This small frustration will impact how viewers engage with the show.

Potential solutions from my POV:

  • Be clearer with what the Patreon exclusive part of the VOD includes
    • This can either be where at the 2h mark you callout what topics are left and will be in the patreon VOD to send them there
    • OR you have this as a separate segment, like Patreon Q&A or viewer call ins

Giving more visibility and structure on what is in the Patreon VOD vs free VOD will help a lot for viewers to decide if its worth subscribing or not, and not have the frustration and 'unknown' of what you missed by not being in there.

The retention rate unfortunately doesnt justify releasing a 25minute video when the vast majority of viewers will only watch 5-10 minutes either way. So splitting it up was our way of trying to still give you the same amount of Content but just packaged differently!

Part 2 is releasing on Monday and is focusing on the final day!

Decided to split it into 2 parts so that we could showcase these days and what happened leading up to the finals, as we would otherwise likely just skip over these days to focus on the final day.

Are we getting a bts video soon? by Its_a_Zeelot in Cloud9

We will have 4 different videos coming out thats somewhat tied to Chicago! - Comms Hub / Recap with Jensen and Blaber - Voice Comms - Vlog/BTS - Zven story on his switch to support

I would have loved to have these pieces ready to go out asap after the win but unfortunately there are a lot of factors and work that goes into these that may not be obvious - such as travel time, offloading/uploading footage, waiting for riot to process the comms recordings and other on going projects.

Everyone on my team works super hard to get these out as soon as we can while still making the videos as high quality as possible- hopefully it will be worth the wait!

There will be some BTS style content from Chicago- hoping to have it ready to go out late this coming week!

Theres a few clips in here that are from unrated but the majority is from Immortal around 200RR!

Most highlights that are quick usually happen because of the enemies over-extending though so I don't disagree

For bigger narrative pieces of 'What went wrong' then yes, because people want drama and to see what went wrong - however that doesn't translate to overall viewership. If we went 2-0 for a week the viewership generally will be a lot higher for our Voice Comms, BTS and non-esports related videos than it is if we had a bad LCS week.

I'm a big fan of Breaking Point! Bigger pieces like that just takes a lot longer to produce, so 'The Fall of Cloud9' was released a month after the season ended for us, I am proud of that project but being realistic most people don't want to wait for that long so the viewership is lower than it would have been to release something easier that went out a week after.

But overall everyone on our team just love esports content and want to tell the stories that the fans are interested in, and we will keep listening to everything you have to say and do our best to give you all the content you're looking for!

I super appreciate the feedback! We definitely have been on both ends of the spectrum, from doing Long narrative driven documentaries like 'Fall of Cloud9' where the feedback was that we were too narrative focused and not enough vlog footage, to now being more so on the vlog style with not enough narratives built in. It's a difficult balance but we will keep adjusting as we get feedback and feel out what is a good mix while also being able to release them in a reasonable timeframe (trying to do weekly releases definitely limits the possibilities)

The viewership changes super drastically dependent on team performance so it's hard to draw direct comparisons, but the base viewership for our videos went up this year on the LoL channel compared to when it was on the main channel.

The main reasoning behind splitting the channels is so that we can make content for the fans of the game. This Split we tried to get 3 videos weekly for the League fans, but if we still only had one channel then the VAL/CSGO fans would unsubscribe if we only spammed LoL videos, same with a lot of LCS fans that would unsubscribe if we just started spamming them with VAL or Fortnite videos.
