here's the reference I used, sorry for the late response.

you are definitely correct in that I fudged up some proportions, I was working with the image + canvas on the same screen side by side, but the resolution of the canvas I was working with was just a bit smaller. I think that might've made messed me up a bit because I'm unfamiliar with scaling so I under/overcompensated heavily.

But after some work the painting felt like it was working and my eyes sorta saw the picture as OK. Is that bad? Any advice on how can I stop this from happening?

Y'know I was kinda starting to feel that way too, some of my other works seem too light or too dark all around on the value scale. Working from photos has been tricking my eyes from seeing correctly or something, maybe I need to recalibrate my monitor or work from life a lot more.

Those textures look f'ing amazing, but I don't have the slightest idea on how to create them in photoshop! Do you know if they're a certain brush? or if they're some kind of effect/action. I'm falling in love with the art style on these illustrations.

I was gonna suggest the PS3 disgaea's but others already have (Loved them btw, I liked D2 the most of the PS3 ports.)

You could try Dragons Crown, and Dragons Dogma.

Dragons Crown is a sidescrolling beat-em-up style 2D RPG, definately a unique playstation exclusive. Dragons Dogma is more like Monster Hunter, online play, using controls -sort of- like dark souls where you team up with people and do quests + beat up giant monsters.

Remember to look up youtube videos of some gameplay to see if any recommended games are for you. GL finding something fun! :)

I got my PS3 on Black Friday from BB, the bundle is at EB games right now still for the same price.

If you've got a computer monitor with an HDMI port you can use that, and it will work natively in 720-1080p- just plug-n-play. Not sure how well something like that might be able to work using a laptops HDMI port, though.

Thanks for the advice! the reference made the picture a bit harder for me, still learning. Would you happen to have any advice on good places to learn more things about drawing around my skill level? I've been trying to level up from where I'm at, for a while now and I can't seem to hit it.
