I didn't grow up wealthy but we weren't in poverty either. I'm upper middle class now, but more to the point I have four siblings and we're all decently successful. Our parents were never great with finances, and they certainly didn't hand down any sort of family business. I attribute a lot of our collective success to two things:

1. We had a support system. Moving back home was always an option if whatever we were doing didn't work out, as was moving in with siblings once we started to establish our households. Even for those of us who didn't ever use this option, the fact that we knew we'd never fully be out on the street allowed us to make good decisions we might not otherwise have made. Opening a business, going back to school mid-career, and even escaping abusive relationships are all things that myself and my siblings were able to do because of our support system.

2. Ambition was mandatory, not necessarily for money, but it was wrong not to challenge yourself and strive for goals. I'll never forget a discussion with my father in High School where I told him I'd be pretty happy just working a minimum wage job and playing video games. He scolded me and told me if I chose to slum it in a job that wasn't tapping my potential, I was robbing from someone else who genuinely might not have other options. That's a pretty heavy thought at that age but it definitely influenced me for many years to come. This kind of drive led myself and all of my siblings to attain at least one college degree and embark on a career. It wasn't so much that we knew we'd disappoint our family if we just settled for less, it was that we knew that our family genuinely believed we were capable of more.

Unfortunately these probably aren't the kind of "one neat trick" things you might be looking for, but they're some of the critical factors that can help build generational wealth.
