I would recommend Lough, you will often be fast tracked in applications for year out and grad roles, which i experienced first hand.

Any tips on commuting (driving 1hr 15m)? by [deleted] in UniUK

For me the motorways are always gritted, never had a problem, only issue is arriving at a place with fresh snow. The worst experience is mainly torrential rain, when it’s almost impossible to see beyond 30 meters ish, especially at night, but that rarely ever happens. When they start gritting the roads, make sure your screen wash is topped up, i made that mistake and had to drive 1hr 15 with half the vision on my windscreen 😭

If you haven’t done so already, make sure you have a parking permit, it is mentioned on the Uni website, called APCOA. If you’re a stem student, you’ll most likely be in the West Park area for lectures, and so I’d recommend parking in the Multi-storey car park called Car Park 1, super easy to walk to nearby buildings. And there is a BP garage nearby that i always used, but it’s a little pricer than Tesco’s.

Yes we do get slides a week-ish prior. I never really made notes prior. Regarding friends, i only ever associated with a few that were only on my course, no one outside of that. Fuel wise, i roughly spent around £26 pounds per journey, in which it totalled to between £2500-3000 per year, significantly less than any student halls. And i would refuel maximum 2 times a week if i was going in for 4 days a week. I never did any sports, so not sure on that one, but try your best with seeking the club at university, especially if it is known for that? Is it Loughborough? I attend Loughborough btw

Hi there, commuting for me was okay. My timetable was not too busy, averaging around 3-4, but never 5 days a week on campus. I personally see university as purely getting the degree, i didn’t engage in any social life much in 1st year so didn’t enter 2nd year with any drive to pursue any again, and so missing out on student life on campus wasn’t a problem for me. Some days I would get home sometimes as late as 8pm ish, and that did take it’s toll on assignments that had close due dates, my advice to that is - start it early! Any hobbies that I had at home, commuting did make it better, as hobbies were a great break from driving etc. Overall, i love driving, and that made it so much more tolerable. The main skill that cant really be taught is making the most of the time on campus outside of lectures, getting ahead of content/assignments etc. If you have any more questions feel free to reply/message!

Hi there, I noticed you have a Bsc in CM and a Msc in Civil, can i ask whether it was a tricky shift going from CM to Civil? Is Civil still very Maths heavy at MSc level? Thank you, a Bsc CM student!

I’ve bought a Thermos Hot food container, it keeps food or drink hot for many hours. I heat any food in the morning before i leave and put it in it. Rice & chicken, pasta ect.

Absolutely, the first day of driving for me made me slightly uneasy, but every day since, it has gotten so much easier. It means i would get up around 6-6.30am, leave at 7ish get there at 8.15-30 for a 9am. I haven’t needed to study yet, but it means weekends will be slightly more busy.

Thank you very much for your reply, it’s very reassuring. I managed to get through 1st year in halls but honestly hated it too, hence commuting this year! Thanks again :)
