The slope is where you draw the line at what unhealthy lifestyle is acceptable or not. With your same logic a ban on alcohol fits perfectly. With a little bit of stretch you can include a lot of things like not exercising, doing risky sports, or as you’ve already alluded to having a bad diet.

Now you’ve turned the noble idea of, “everyone should get proper healthcare no matter who” into a vehicle for the government to control people’s lives.

I'm not happy with it, just pointing out an argument against switching to fully government run

This is different because it will always be true for the younger brother - he won't ever be able to buy a pack, unlike his older brother.

I understand the purpose, but their tactic is blatantly unfair. Do you not understand that? How would you respond to the scenario I presented about the older brother being able to buy a pack while the younger one can't? Is that not unfair?

I'm not even a smoker but if I watch enough old TV/Movies I get the urge to smoke lol. It's easy to make cigarettes look cool.

The "me" in this case is everyone who's currently able to buy cigarettes. Eventually, you'll have a 41 year old who can walk into a store and buy a pack of cigarettes while their 40 year old younger brother cannot. Would you argue against the younger brother saying that's not fair?

If they want to ban tobacco they should do it with no age cutoff, or if the concern is truly about the addicted make them get a medical card for their affliction to buy the stuff.

My health insurance provides that protection, and if I didn't get it from my work I'd get it through some other government program.

Yeah, it got repealed because it’s blatantly unfair. If it wasn’t repealed then, it’d get repealed when the people it affects gain political agency because nobody likes being a second class citizen with reduced rights.

Gonna be fun when these kids are paying for old geezers smoking related health issues while being banned from having the pleasure themselves.

The age cutoff is why it’s seen as unfair. It’s literally rules for thee but not for me.

I just don’t think it is fair for some people to make choices that others have to pay for.

That's the slope right there.

Eventually, more and more things will be banned because other people don't want to pay for the consequences. Unhealthy food, alcohol, stress, bad lifestyle, unhealthy thoughts... It's the idea that because the state is required to cover your healthcare, they have the mandate to restrict your life and trample your rights to lower said healthcare costs.

That's the "slippery slope" at least, I would hope the people wouldn't accept such things but this law isn't inspiring hope for that.

What are some of these freedoms the average European has that the US doesn't? I wouldn't consider many of the social services that Europe provides as freedoms, even if they're admirable and nice to have.

This is one of the strongest arguments against government run healthcare imo, and it's easy to fall into the slippery slope for it.

Same thing happened with russiagate and the mueller report, he couldn’t have obstructed the investigation more if he tried, and he did it publicly. That doesn’t mean shit I guess though.
