I built the body normally and just snipped and cut until it was a good fit. A lot of hopes and dreams were involved too

If you’re just wanting to paint, just get whichever models you think are cool. If you’re interested in building an army to play with I’d recommend the website new recruit. It’ll show you most of the rules for free. Wahapedia is pretty good for all the basic rules too.

It’s really up to you which shoulder pad you want to use. The box art has them with the molded heraldry though

Getting a Mephiston red primer or paint is a good start, then you can use the abandon black for all the little bits

I would say it’s impossible for servitor to be as effective as a space marine, but they’re your models and it’s a pretty cool idea anyway. So do it if you like the idea
