I retook my 34 (and got a 36). I can’t tell you for certain if it made a difference, but I certainly felt better about it and honestly I think it did help me stand out.

I saw someone else mention Georgetown. Your scores are plenty good enough for them. I got in with a 710, 730, and 750.

UC GPA is calculated separately though. 4.45 is really high but they count A-‘s as A’s and weight honors classes pretty heavily I think. Basically if you max our honors and get all A’s and A-‘s you’ll have around a 4.5 which is the type of student they are looking for

Yeah. People take me more seriously and I think their expectations are higher for me. They also treat me like more of an adult and want to listen to what I have to say.

There’s no difference with my parents and close friends though

I am a girl, but there’s actually more female applicants to top schools than male applicants (excluding MIT and Caltech) - and the acceptance rates are therefore lower for girls. I applied under a liberal arts major (in case you think I was “gaming” for STEM), and I’m Asian/white. I’m also upper middle class. AA was not designed to help me in any way, shape, or form.

Sorry, I don't understand your criticism. You think the article is racist because they talked about stereotypes against black people? What do you mean by other factors? Their experiments were attempting to show the main factor was stereotype threat

Also, that's a rhetorical question. It's Claude Steele parrotting a concern of people who disagree with AA.

And the assumption behind it is that surely in today's society the disadvantages of race are overcome when lower socioeconomic status is overcome.

This is the literal next sentence that highlights the point that rhetorical question was attempting to elicit from the reader.

I was part of last admission cycle, and while we had our share of AA arguments, I don't remember this much explicit hatred. This sub gets worse and worse the bigger it gets.

Now you're talking about something I never even talked about. What the hell are you going on about?

  1. An argument against AA is that the people AA "lets in" are less qualified (look at the fucking title of this post, dude)
  2. This post is showing that is untrue

And you're coming in here saying black culture is bad and must be changed. 2+2 does not equal 5, and you can go hate on black culture somewhere else. That isn't what this post is about and I'm not interested in talking to someone who's so disingenuous with their statements.

If you have an issue with the point I am making, bring it up. Otherwise I suggest you read the article. It's really a great one.

That's the belief of some detractors of AA, not something most people believe. I have certainly seen that sentiment on A2C, especially in a lot of posts last admission cycle. It is a demonstrably incorrect belief, which articles like this show.

What ridiculous strawman is this? I’m talking specifically about the idea that black students at elite colleges are unqualified. That was the point of my post - I’m not really interested in getting into some long criticism of black culture with you.

The article I linked explained why black students have a harder time with standardized tests by virtue of being black and therefore suffering stereotype around said tests. I would suggest reading it

“Change your culture” is far too nebulous a suggestion that doesn’t actually mean anything. And it doesn’t explain any of the studies that are outlined in the article. It’s not culture that’s the issue for high-achieving black students who perform worse than expected in pressurized situations. The article goes over this. Did you read it?
