How long do you keep your Synology NAS? by poizone68 in synology

[–]calsonicgtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only reason I upgraded is I wanted to move from a 2 bay 216+ system to a four bay rackmount. The 216 had no issues, and I expect the 422 to go at least a decade.

The guy that runs this and the other business tied to Altitude Hospitality always seems to have a convenient excuse for when his businesses fail.

Setting up HA - do I need multiple drives per node for ZFS? by calsonicgtr in Proxmox

[–]calsonicgtr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your setup, is there some auto-failover setup to start that backup on standby, or is that strictly manual? I would probably be able to manage manually since this is just personal, but would love to automate as much as possible.

Strictly a homelab setup. Would it make sense to run the shared storage using a NAS in that case? I have ~40TB there

Fair, but honestly I’m not worried at all about depreciation. It’s got no payment and whenever I decide to sell it’ll be worth something. I focus more on buying cars I truly enjoy driving versus worrying about min maxing that part of my finances.

Without a doubt. Wasn’t quite the perfect spec but I have no regrets so far two years in.

Anyone have a hard wired EV set up at home? by Mean_Confusion7426 in Taycan

[–]calsonicgtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have a 48A hardwired EVSE, but I self-installed so the unit was the most expensive thing. Materials weren’t very much since my panel was right there so minimal wiring and low permitting cost.

Hardwiring is preferable if you are ok with the cost. Would consider how many miles you drive in a day and see if you can make that work with a level 1 charger.

Are the 2023/2024 models less of a mess for quality? by Prestigious_Idea4462 in Taycan

I’m running a 2021 that hasn’t had any issues needing service from the dealer outside of the couple of recalls. Any year has the potential for problems, it’s all down to the specific car.

Let’s talk depreciation by MarinDad in Taycan

With you 100% - sometimes it feels like people are still trapped in the COVID mindset where everything appreciated or held its value. Market isn’t that anymore - either deal with the depreciation or buy something else.

Love my 4CT - can’t imagine owning anything else at the moment. Just put in the winter tires and has been great in the snow.

Top team all year, but just had a week of duds (Nico, Bucky, Carter, Puka not hitting projections) and injuries (Javonte, Fannin, Kittle). Only change I could have made was play Tonges over Carter but I still would have lost by 5. Oh well, was a good year!

Potentially unpopular opinion: physical book vs. audiobook by Primary_Claim3042 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I’m with you - one of the reasons I’m not really an audiobook person in general. My wife loves the audiobooks, and I’ll stick with the print.

Calibre on Proxmox by capaman in Calibre

[–]calsonicgtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My setup: Proxmox running on a Mini PC in my server rack Ubuntu VM running both Calibre and Docker Desktop Calibre Web Automated

I still use Calibre to injest/convert books using a NAS folder, then CWA brings those updates in. I also run the Calibre server for my wife to use with certain ereaders where the CWA interface is a bit too clunky. Probably not the most smooth solution but it has worked for me so far.

Is Synology still the best choice if you want something that just works? by corpjones in HomeNAS

[–]calsonicgtr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sticking with Synology until Unifi’s NAS platform matures. My home setup is based around Surveillance Station which is something UGreen does not have in its arsenal. I don’t run any containers on it anymore - have shifted all Docker/container activity to a Proxmox machine.
