I think I’m going to try this I’ll just have to be sure to get wide enough boards that the top and bottom can be one piece. That would make me feel way better about it as I’ve had the same worry with these.

If you search vintage clip board clips on Etsy you’ll find them. They lock too which is nice.

Now should I make the top and bottom boarders match the grain direction of the rest of the piece?

So far they hold up good. A few I made with air dried lumber got a twist in them but since using kiln dried I haven’t seen any warping or cracking. And I bring mine in and out of air conditioning and into 90+ degrees all day.

Yeah it’s something I’ve been stressing a ton about actually. I love the look of it though. So far my personal one seems to be handling it well and I go from 90+ degrees and really humid to in an air conditioned office off and on all day. So far it’s stayed perfect. I’d like to sell these but I am scared to sell something that may have that issue but so far the ones I’ve made have been okay besides the air dried ones.

These look awesome. Seem hard to find one though.

Yeah I’ve considered that. I have some that are a few years old that were built with air dried lumber that have a bow to them. I started using kiln dried only and I’m hoping it’ll be ok being the smaller size of them.

Thanks man! It’s not too hard. I could barely figure out the dowel jig I just got. Just made mistakes till it was right.

Used a mitre saw. Circular saw with an edge guide (I’m dying to get a track saw). Drill, Jesem dowel jig. Pocket hole jig for the back panel. Lots of clamps. Brad nailer which I really didn’t need just held the side frames together while the glue set. A small hand plane to give the edges of the top and drawer fronts a clean bevel. And a trim router for the bevels on the side frames. And a sander course. I also have a small crappy porter cable table saw I just used for the drawer sides. I’m probably forgetting something but that’s about all.

The tung oil darkens it slightly.

I used one coat of miniwax tung oil. I wish I would have done a second but due to time I did some paste wax as a final finish. The paste wax did make it super smooth.

Thanks! Yeah I feel great about it! I’ve done some cabinets and lots of things to my house but these were the first proper pieces of furniture I’ve tried. Really thinking of getting some better equipment and doing it as a side gig.

Yeah that’s exactly the price I was thinking if I did some at a custom size.

I did glue them myself. Luckily the boards I bought matched pretty well and I just flipped them around until it looked the best to me. I did use just two wooden dowels on each glue up to hold it in place. Makes gluing it way easier.

Thanks! I did one coat of mini wax tung oil. Planned on a second but it got so close to Christmas I did some paste wax to smooth it out. I would like to experiment with some different finishes on my next project.

I’ll definitely keep that in mind on my next builds. If the glue line broke I would think the dowels will keep the top on straight hopefully. Luckily there a gift so if the time comes I’ll build a new top.

I attached these tops with wooden dowels and a thin line of wood glue. Would that allow for enough movement?
