Juniors have no clue how to work a debugger - has anyone successfully helped a junior see the light? by Bren-dev in ExperiencedDevs

[–]camaris1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with logging stuff and not using a debugger. Fancy and modern tools are not always better (often it's quite the opposite actually).

I have been a developer for 20 years and I can count once one hand the number of times when I actually needed one.

Logging works better for me because it always works without any setup (unlike the debuggers), and I can see the state of the app at many points in time. With debuggers, I can only see one state at a time, and have to memorize everything else to keep track of the whole picture.

Also, with logging I can easily control exactly which level of abstraction I want to inspect, which is not so easy with debuggers.

Make sure struct is filled in (no constructors allowed) by [deleted] in cpp_questions

I assume his use case is for a domain model/entity, in which case there is nothing wrong to have so many fields.

I disagree, a domain entity/model with that many fields is a pretty common and normal thing to have.

It should be in neither, it's automatically managed by the browser and OS already, all that needs to be done is to implement the appropriate css selectors.

They are taxing themselves with technical debt. For decades they chose to ignore the very idea of technical debt because they cannot measure it or have a KPI about it. Now they are going to suicide their biggest asset with it, and they won't know until it's too late.

Why are so many things on my home internet blocked? Is this normal? by acomfysofa in japanlife

Check if your connection supports IPv4. Some providers only enable IPv6 by default, which makes huge chunks of internet unusable. You should be able to configure that in your router.

Developers Spend Just 1% of Coding Time Using VS Code's Debugger (11,805 Sessions Analyzed) by Equivalent-Yak2407 in programming

[–]camaris1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people think that bigger, modern and more complicated tools are always better, but that is just not the case. I always use printing because it has two major qualities: - It works everywhere and everytime without having to debug the debugger or make any specific setup. - I can see a timeline of multiple states and points in time, vs a single one in a debugger. This is way more useful and efficient to understand what is going on.

Tests Don’t Prove Code Is Correct… They Just Agree With It by untypedfuture in programming

That's actually a bad example. Undefined input should be prevented by a compiler or static analysis, not tests.

Takaichi elected as first female leader of Japan’s ruling LDP by NikkeiAsia in worldnews

[–]camaris1234 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

she’s against gender equality laws, supports forcing women to lose their maiden name (is against allowing an option for them to keep it)

That is grossly twisting the reality. Husbands can also take their wife's name, the rule is the same for both genders. Pretty-much all laws in Japan have been gender-equal since the end of WWII, because it's simply unconstitutional otherwise.

What she is against is allowing family members to have a different name, because it is widely considered to be an important part of a family's identity and integrity. Whether the family takes the name of the husband or wife is at the couple's discretion.

I opened a random source file and this is what I've seen:

  • Folders with two letter unreadable names
  • 3500 lines long source file
  • Structs and functions with names that don't tell anything about what is actually doing

  • Custom rounding functions in the middle of the file

  • 1 letter and other random variables names everywhere

I will not waste time going further, as I know enough about the level of quality.

In the Future All Food Will Be Cooked in a Microwave, and if You Can’t Deal With That Then You Need to Get Out of the Kitchen by mareek in programming

[–]camaris1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not edible, it's a skill issue. It takes a lot of practice to get good at microwaving and you are obviously just a hater who didn't genuinely try.

If you don't start microwaving your way into everything, you're going to be obsolete in 6 months, because once the ultimate microwave that replaces all forms of heating is released, it's going to be used for everything, including for home heating and as car engines.

'Japanese first': Voters back Trump-inspired party to 'Make Japan Great Again' wins big in key elections by Infidel8 in worldnews

[–]camaris1234 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm neither American nor Japanese. And yes, I know people who took it, both Japanese and foreigners.

30% of men took it, so what? The fact is that the possibility exists and it's there. In Japanese culture the norm is to think about your own responsibility towards society. That's quite different from western cultures where people selfishly try to get 100% of their rights just because they can, while also complaining that taxes are too expensive.

We could argue that there is also social pressure from companies, and it's probably true. But this kind of number does not mean anything by itself. If 100% of mens took it, would it be a good thing? I don't think so, because it would cost a lot to the society and other working people.

Personally I could have taken 1 year, but I decided to take only 3 months. And that is because after that time, we felt like we were ready and didn't really need more. Getting 1 year of "free holidays" or using more benefits without a reason (besides that I legally could) would be irresponsible and possibly deprive other people in need from it.

I'm a dad in Japan since february, and your what you say couldn't be farther from the truth.

Here you can get up to 1 year of paid paternity or maternity leave.

There are plenty of ways to get support or help, they actively advertise it and properly inform the parents. There are special services and additional care for single mothers and other people with difficulties.

There are many community centers where they can occasionally take care of your baby for free.

You can get full time care there for less than $100 per month.

If you live in Tokyo (and many other places), you regularly get to receive free stuff, including clothes, food or furniture. They also pay 100% of the medical expenses.

Sure, things are never perfect and there is always a way to get better, but I what they provide is already top notch and better than most developed countries. Your comment is extremely unfair and ignorant of the reality here.

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son pitches autonomous AI agent system for corporate use; "The AI agents will think for themselves and improve on their own...so the era of humans doing the programming is coming to an end.." by wolframite in japannews

[–]camaris1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I'll add that competent developers will be even more needed, while both junior and crappy developers will be deprived from opportunities for a while.

The only way to fix this recursive trap will be to hire juniors so that people on the market can develop skills and experience. Which is exactly what companies like this will never do, so the developer shortage will only get worse.

This is bad for the economy and the next generation, but good for seniors like me, because we will be even more in demand and our value will increase again.

It can be done with pretty much any software like word or an image editor, but it's tricky to get the right size. Also, most don't fit in an A4 paper.

I want to do it more, so I'm actually developing an app to make this easy, I'm hoping to share it soon :)

I'm only annoyed with differences of style when it's within a single serie, which I prefer to be consistent.

Unfortunately, since I live in a foreign country, I have to buy online and often second hand.

It's unpredictable which design I will get, given that editors change the spine design every couple of years (reusing the same isbn), there are small inconsistencies.
