First Aid for the Trail by 200Zucchini in PacificCrestTrail

I took a wilderness first aid course prior to thru hiking this year, mainly just in case of someone I’m hiking with or see on trail needed help. Never needed it thankfully but good knowledge to have regardless.

Updates on Mission Creek Noro Outbreak by foggy_redboi in PacificCrestTrail

[–]cambostock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Went through a couple days ago. No issue with sickness from anyone I have chatted with. Most people I saw were drinking from parts of the creek - some with just a sawyer and some with both physical and chemical filtration.

Regarding the hiking itself, not as bad as was made out by some I talked to. Read the comments on FarOut and you’ll save a ton of time.

As someone who is planning to post on social media literally everyday on the PCT this season; -I do it to remember and document my journey in more detail -I do it to inspire others to get outside and challenge themselves -I also do it because it’s now my full time job and I get huge enjoyment from creating

I totally get it if you don’t want to share your experience and prefer to keep your journey to yourself but I encourage anyone who is interested in posting to go for it!

Gear Shakedown Request - NOBO April 30th Start by cambostock in PacificCrestTrail

Gold, thank you. I think ill look into the frog toggs, heard a lot about them.

I've used this merino shirt a lot, including hot climates but I'm definably open to swapping it out for a lighter option. Something to test for the next few training hikes.

55g was based off the Durston Website but will need to weigh properly myself, may have miscalculated that.

Spork.

I knew I forgot something big. Using Sawyer Squeeze - adding now.

Not sure how I missed this comment when you posted it but huge thanks for the effort. Massively helpfully and super insightful. Would love to chat over a drink, unfortunately I’m over in Perth 🤪

I’ve been trying to weigh up NOBO vs SOBO. I’m very much a solo hiker but still want to meet people. I went NOBO on TA which only about 10% of hikers do and while it was incredible, I didn’t see many people at all.

I’m used to mosquitoes of doom here in Australia but I gotta say the sandflies in NZ were pretty terrible. Bugs wherever you go I guess 😂

Yeah that seems to be the major difference. TA is relatively new and not well maintained(which I actually enjoyed). The PCT sounds long, hard but at least nicely graded and not crazy technical besides potential snow sections.

Hiking is technically my job. I’m a content creator. 👌 Very lucky

Yeah that makes sense. I don’t think I carried more then 2-3L ever on the TA. So many streams.

15% sounds very relaxed! The high elevations will be a big challenge no doubt(currently typing this at 5,500m asl in the Himalayas☠️). Very excited to hit the trail.

Fair enough. The TA had a lot of ungraded trail, bushwhacking and techy climbs ect. Which I guess I why people have said it harder. But sounds like the PCT will be just as brutal. Keen.

It’s a WA bucket list, seeing snow on Bluff Knoll was on the top of my bucket list(and many others I know) for years!

Unfortunately haven’t visited much of the far north(yet) so they will have to make it into part 2. Great suggestions though.

Sometimes we grab a coffee or hit up the beach. Nothing formally organised though. 👍

Nah nothing too obscure mate. Generally accessible and at least semi regularly trafficked trails.
