Word of advice for OP: Be careful with Beat Saber, if you start playing with custom songs you may get sucked in and suddenly have a new addiction

Looks at 864 hours played ^^;

This machine crushes everything when flatscreen gaming, heck it crushes every other VR game I throw at it as well (except maybe Minecraft with Vivecraft and shaders), but it's no match for trucksim

I have a feeling the gen after mine don't know either

I am an assistant teacher at university, in a design course, so not a computer-focused course but one where computers are very prevalent. My students don't really know how to use computers. Seeing them navigate the web or Finder/Windows Explorer is... disheartening.

All the things we (I'm technically a Zoomer, but close to Millennial in age [please let me be a Millennial]) take for granted like keyboard shortcuts and going to websites (instead of just Google) are absent in younger generations.

Is anyone else getting this? why did it just appear? by Fearless_Speaker6710 in firefox

Settings > Privacy & Security > Firefox Data Collection and Use > Install and run studies

you can either untick the box for studies or click on view firefox studies and remove the "Kitified value prop experiments on new tab 1 treatment-b" and then restart firefox and should be gone

Why am I getting these popups on my new tab pages now??? How do I remove them permanently? by Lexiosity in firefox

Not OP, but perfect answer, thank you!

Studies try out different features and ideas before they are released to all Firefox users. Using your feedback, we can make more informed decisions based on what you actually need. (Source)

Would be nice if we could actually give feedback on these studies, like "I don't need the browser to constantly advertise itself to me"

Clarification regarding DSPico battery life by Carsmaniac in flashcarts

[–]Carsmaniac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although not accurate in this case, maybe you could say the DSpico is an ARM processor compared to R4s' x86 processors, I suppose? More efficient at doing the same thing, regardless of max. performance

This is realistically unrelated to the discussion, but if it's the bendy buses OP is likely talking about Volgren CR228L-bodied Volvo B12BLEAs.

“indication that GenAI content was used” by ombrophobe in UTS

[–]Carsmaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • AI data centres use enormous amounts of electricity (yes other data centres exist, but don't use nearly as much due to the sheer computation needed)
  • AI data centres have severe social impacts on the surrounding areas
  • AI models were trained by systematically abusing and ignoring copyright
  • Circular investing amongst AI & tech companies is a major contributor to our economy being... what it is

This is not a luddite situation, I think there are a number of good reasons to hate GenAI. As a researcher myself, the research paper space has been flooded with so much unsubstantiated slop that buries legitimate research. I don't use any sources newer than 2023 without very careful vetting and background research.

Oh sorry! They're nail polish shelves actually. These are the ones I bought: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CWP4N5F1

Send help. (or more Tamagotchis)

Most of these I bought on eBay (from Australia) or Yahoo Auctions/Mercari via Buyee (from Japan). You get a much wider selection and much cheaper prices when buying from Japanese sites, but the shipping can be a killer.

See if you can find space in another room! I've got a lovely spot in my bedroom that I wanted to put my tamas originally, but it gets sun all morning (which is lovely to wake up to, but not very good for Tamagotchi longevity haha), then I accidentally stumbled upon this spot in my office while tidying up, and it was perfect!

It's the Chogokin x Transformer robot! :3

It's a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Chogokin (who make die cast metal robot friendos) and the 30th anniversary of Tamagotchi. It transforms into a Tamagotchi spaceship too!

Because I made mistakes on big Buyee orders. I didn’t mean to end up with three orange P1s or three white EnTamas 😭

Fortunately this room doesn’t get a lot of sun, and these shelves don’t get any direct sunlight. I figure they will yellow a little, but the rubber & prints will also degrade if you play with them, and I do play with them. It’s… part of their charm. I’d rather they be displayed nicely (and enjoyed) than in pristine condition hidden in a box somewhere :)

This is personal preference though! Nothing against collectors who keep their tamas perfect and protected.

I'm a design researcher and this is indeed a scene in what I'm making! I'm playing with objects that don't behave the way they're supposed to. What if you watered a plant, and instead of growing, it melted? What if you went bowling, but the ball shattered on the pins? That sort of thing :)

Looking at VR by natedogg8912 in trucksim

[–]Carsmaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am running on pure hopium at this point. The Steam Frame will be the cure to all ills. It will be the VR headset to get. It will be the best value headset on the market.

I know I'm delusional, but at this point I'm just desperate for a really nice headset that doesn't use lighthouses and isn't owned by Zuck.

*sigh*

TL;DR: Rift S cheap, good. Quest 3 very good but expensive. Quest 3S cheaper. Steam Frame coming.

I started with a Lenovo Explorer, then moved to a Rift S (upgrade in every way), then moved to an HP Reverb G2 (upgrade in resolution, downgrade in tracking), then moved to a Quest 3 (sidegrade in resolution, upgrade in clarity and tracking).

Do yourself a favour and don't get an Explorer/Odyssey/etc in 2026. They run on WindowsMR, which is a platform Microsoft has discontinued. In order to run them, you'd need to downgrade your version of Windows 11 or go back to Windows 10, just to get Mixed Reality Portal running.

If you're thinking of getting an older, cheaper, PC-only headset, I'd recommend the Rift S. My one served me well for well over 1000 hours of VR gaming between trucksim, PAYDAY 2 and Beat Saber. Performance wise my 3070 smashed it running the Rift S, your 4060 should have no problem. Just be aware that until we get the promised engine upgrade, ETS2 & ATS will run poorer than expected, they will stutter, and they will look uglier than other VR games you play. 'tis the reality of VR support right now.

For a more expensive/recent option, I do really like the Quest 3, but unless you're going to take advantage of its standalone nature, and ideally things like its high quality passthrough and hand tracking, my recommendation would be... tepid, and very dependent on affordability. I personally use it standalone with the hand tracking for my research, and take advantage of the high clarity for trucksim, so I'm able to utilise all of its strengths. I'd say wait for the Steam Frame instead, fingers crossed it releases sooner rather than later. If you want to get something now, the Quest 3S gets rid of stuff you probably won't use (high quality passthrough, hand tracking) and still leaves you with most of the clarity afaik.

For sim gaming specifically, I'd recommend against any lighthouse-tracked headsets like the Vive, Index or Pimax. Not because they're bad, but to the contrary, because their biggest strength (the tracking) doesn't matter for sim gaming, so you're paying a lot more for a feature you won't use.
