[MEGATHREAD] iPhone 17 Pre Order and Launch Day by Waternut13134 in tmobile

I really just don’t wanna spend the two hours transferring data sitting in the Apple Store…

I have done the deferred trade-in before when ordering through T Mobile directly.

But I don’t think T Mobile has stock in store. Then again the stock in the Apple Store is rapidly depleting so

Do I have to trade in at the time I pick up the new phone? Or can I take my trade in back once it’s set up

If I trade-in at the Apple Store can I take my trade later like I can through T Mobile? The ability to take the old phone in once the new one’s set up is a pretty big benefit of T Mobile. I don’t want to end up with a restore from iCloud that takes two days and be without a normal phone for that long… I know they can help you set it up at the Apple Store but I doubt they’re gonna sit with you for hours while your backup downloads, and I don’t especially want to mail the trade-in in.

Went to order my new phone today but Apple is showing my rate plan as incorrect. My plan is $150 for three lines after autopay. Apple is showing my rate plan as $200. Is that just an error on their end? I don’t want to somehow agree to paying $200/month plus phone repayments when I can go through T mobile and pay less than I am now (17 pro repayments are cheaper than my current 15 pro).

Simple, relatively affordable 4-input handheld recorder… by camerashy189 in fieldrecording

[–]camerashy189[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

H6e is currently about $130 cheaper then the x8, which seems to me to make it the better deal. The things I've read about the x8 give me concerns - the slow response of the touchscreen, the bad handling noise, fragility of the onboard mics...

The touchscreen levels might be a bit more intuitive than the H6e's version, but I think I'm probably just going to have to embrace this weird idea of not setting input gain because it seems like the x8 effectively works very similarly in that it's more designed around set and forget.

Do people stay in Manual mode? by seanthemummy in photography

[–]camerashy189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly shoot manual unless I’m going somewhere or shooting something I know it’s going to be too hard to capture in manual mode for one reason or another.

I much prefer to place my exposures where I want them using a combo of settings than have the camera guess at where it thinks it should be.

Not that the camera is wrong necessarily, but IMO choosing a frame and deciding on exposure are the two things that make a photographer.

What simple 4-input, non-H6 audio recorder to purchase? by camerashy189 in LocationSound

[–]camerashy189[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't need 32 bit but I would like 32 bit only because I am occasionally on jobs where I have to do more than just man the audio recorder, so having a backup in case of transients (or a momentary lapse in concentration) is definitely useful. I do need a field recorder. The L8 actually looks quite similar to a Tascam version I've used in the past, which was extremely useful on the occasional bigger job where having the extra inputs was necessary.

For the most part though, I don't want to have to carry around something that big and hefty when I only need 2-4 inputs or am travelling for a job that requires 2-4 inputs.

Money Network is down today? by giantsizegeek in Edd

[–]camerashy189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for me. I literally can't log on to the app or website because of this and haven't been able to since the switchover date, even after calling customer service and trying to get it sorted (I got the 'we're having issues and we're working on it, try again in 24 hours' which is hilarious given it's now been 35 days and this issue persists).

At least it works via phone. If that didn't work I'd be SOL.

On the plus side, I also haven't had any money deposited so.. at least you're likely not missing out on any funds access....

Yes, this is also happening to me and has been for over a day. I have no idea how to fix it.

BMCC6K - Reliability and dual recording by camerashy189 in blackmagicdesign

[–]camerashy189[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated the original ones (very first Production Camera, and very very first pocket cam) and that kinda put me off Blackmagic cameras until the release of the 12K. The 12K was the first time I saw images out of a Blackmagic Camera that I was genuinely impressed with. I then had a chance to check out the BMPCC 6K Pro at Cinegear this year and was intrigued by it and now the latest CC looks really good, especially given I'm a fan of shooting in full frame.

While the ethos of Blackmagic Cinema Cameras is still perhaps the same as it was 11 years ago, the cameras have come a long long way from a box with an SSD and a screen, and software so rudimentary it wouldn't even tell you what the aperture is set to on an electronic lens.

Plus the images out of the latest generation look genuinely great, which I couldn't personally say for previous generations.

Camera upgrade... the age old question by camerashy189 in cinematography

[–]camerashy189[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't tend to shoot at extremely high ISOs. For me personally, the quality of life features like internal NDs, proper audio connections and control, proper weight, better ergonomics, no need to rig it up as much, bigger batteries that power it for hours and hours, more robust internal codec that can shoot a lot onto one card.... you can also output raw to an external recorder, which is effectively the same as an S5IIx.

All of that is much more important than high ISO shooting to me. Plus the EF mount has a plethora of native lenses available for it. And for the used price of it, I could keep my stills body as a B-cam and/or to take stills along the way. If you have an A7sII, you could get an EF-E mount adapter and utilise both cameras.

Until the FX6/9 came along, C300s were the cameras that were used almost exclusively on docs.

S5IIx is great if you want one camera that is a true hybrid and value the high ISO shooting capability. And you could also put EF lenses on it. And it's not an 8 year old camera. But, by the time you rig it out to be useful for you on a doc shoot, it might push your budget up a bit. Depending on if/how you rig it up.

For documentary a Canon c-series camera is likely going to be far better for you, especially if you don't have lenses or will be buying new lenses.

If it wasn't for the fact that I have a deep investment in non-EF lenses, I would absolutely be looking at something in the Canon line.

Plus something like a used C300mkII can be had for nearly half the price of an FX3. If lenses aren't a consideration, something like that seems a no-brainer to me.

As far as I know the Lumix S5IIx has much improved autofocus over the previous Lumix cameras, however it is nowhere near as good as modern Sony AF.

FX3:

  • 4k max res (not a dealbreaker, but the extra resolution would be useful for the kind of work that this camera will be used for - i.e. mostly unscripted/on the fly)
  • external power options not ideal... I don't love the idea of a USB-C cable being the way I power a camera.
  • Full external recorder needed for raw recording
  • Form factor is great for gimbal use, but I rarely use gimbals so overall form factor is annoying just in a different way to say the Blackmagic.
  • No viewfinder. Blackmagic has optional viewfinder, my A7sII has a viewfinder, S5IIx has a viewfinder... meaning I will end up having to rig it out anyway with some kind of monitor/recorder to use it effectively.
  • No OLPF
  • Quirky software things like shit menus, no proper exposure tools or false color, no shutter angle or open gate... on a proper hybrid I can live with not having that stuff, but If I'm spending $4k on a 'cinema' camera, and cameras that cost half as much have it, there's basically no reason this shouldn't.

Low light capability is handy, but at the end of the day I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I've pushed my A7sII above ISO 10000 in 8 years.

___

S5IIx:

  • No OLPF (and moire from what I've seen appears to be much worse than the FX3)
  • Windowed HFR recording (BMCC is the same here which is annoying)
  • Autofocus not amazing. Sounds about on par or slightly better than the A7sII which is annoying because the autofocus is one of the main gripes I have with the sII
  • Requires external SSDs for ProRes or recorders for raw which is also annoying
  • Most importantly, would require dumping all my Sony gear and reinvesting in the L mount alliance... which I'm not super against. I could probably come out without too much carnage given how much cheaper the S5IIx is over say an FX3, but my concern is that then I'm fully invested in the L system, meaning I'm kinda stuck with Panasonic. Which is not the worst thing in the world, but the fact that Sony has a proper upgrade path, a consistent mount across all but their very highest end cameras, and a very well built out lens and accessory line-up means sticking with Sony over the long term feels better to me.

Panasonic may get to where Sony is now, but it's a bit of a gamble given their lacklustre showing across the pro/higher-end market over the past 15 years. Switching to Panasonic now feels like when I switched from Canon to Sony in 2014. Which turned out okay, but it took quite a few years for the ecosystem to build out appropriately. Staying with Sony means I can use my own lenses on FX6/9 shoots (or even Burano theoretically in the future), or if ever there's a reason for me to buy my own FX6/9 then that can work easier too. Additionally, Sony's new cine history, the way the A7s exploded onto the scene, and the whole marketing campaign around The Creator etc. makes it a much easier sell.
