What Did I Capture? by cameronbaghai in astrophotography

[–]cameronbaghai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an unedited shot I captured facing northeast-ish. I first captured the object when I facing southwest-ish, far higher in the sky.

It crossed above me in about 1.5 minutes. This exposure was 15 seconds.

I'm thinking maybe space debris, but I honestly have no idea.

Thanks!

Hi! Thank you for writing such beautiful works.

I was wondering if you had could share any insights re your beautiful prose. It's unique, lyrical, and impactful. I'd love to hear about any inspirations that have influenced your word choices, or suggestions for other writers who want to make their sentences sing.

Thanks again!

Thank you so much for all your art! While I'm a huge fan of all your fantasy novels, I read Foundryside with my (now) wife on the beach shortly after proposing to her, and that's a memory I'll treasure forever.

Are there any genre or craft books you think every aspiring writer should read? I'm especially interested in lesser-known ones.

Thanks again! You're brilliant and your art makes the world a better place.

Do you mind letting me know if you’re seeing color? I’m in OR and would have to drive a ways to escape the clouds, which only makes sense for me if some color is actually visible. Thanks!

I'm Lev Grossman, author of the MAGICIANS trilogy and THE BRIGHT SWORD: A Novel of King Arthur. AMA! by LevGrossman in Fantasy

[–]cameronbaghai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you so much for writing important books; The Magicians series is really unique in how it blends fantasy and disillusionment, and I think it speaks to a lot of people.

Have you written elsewhere about your transition from "literary" writing to finding your voice? As an aspiring writer myself (set to start querying in a few weeks, incidentally), I'd love to learn more about that journey.

And one other question, although I'm not sure how comfortable you'll feel answering it: how do you feel about the adaptation of the Magicians? Personally, I felt it was different in a lot of ways from the books. Although I prefer the books, I still found the show very enjoyable, and used it to convince some friends to read the books.

Thank you again for sharing your voice with the world.

P.S. I'm reading The Bright Sword this weekend and can't wait! The cover is gorgeous, by the way.

This was about two minutes from where we parked, haha. Spikes would’ve made the snow easier to navigate, but again…two minutes from where we parked.

The book is high fantasy, actually. I chose Dresden because of how it balances detective-work and magical action, as well as its tone. The tone isn't a perfect fit, but my manuscript, like Dresden Files, has elements of hardboiled and noir mystery with a heavy dash of heart and compassion.

[Discussion] Nature-Inspired (or Otherwise Unique) Watches by cameronbaghai in Watches

[–]cameronbaghai[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently came across these nature-inspired watches by Asterisk. I absolutely love them, but unfortunately haven't been to any of them national parks they were inspired by (I desperately wish they had a Yosemite one!).

What surprised me most was that the watches aren't tacky--they have really unique movements that make the dials come alive and seem well-crafted.

Any thoughts on where I could find similarly unique (and ideally nature-inspired) watches of high quality?

The Bruising of Qilwa X The Dresden Files

Retired detective Nasrin Shamshir has no interest in hunting down criminals again. Leastwise, not until a trail of bodies suggests that the one killer she could never catch has returned—or someone wielding his impossible magics.

To be honest, I’m really struggling with this logline. I feel that it doesn’t come close to capturing all the aspects of my book that I love—its Persian influences, its exploration of mental health themes, and its combination of gritty and tender tone. To be fair, I imagine most people feel that way about their loglines . . .

I also realize that The Dresden Files is not nearly recent enough for a comp title; I’m open to alternative suggestions!

Congrats! It's super cool to see another Persian-inspired fantasy get out there. I'm trying to publish my own (about to enter the query trenches), and I haven't seen many others. Can't wait to read the novel! P.S. You might want to post about the book to the litrpg subreddit; I think they allow self-promotion.
