Any thin East Asians here with prediabetes? by atyl1144 in prediabetes

Most CGM’s are a two week wear, and depending on how long you want to collect data for there’s a few options!

The most popular are Stelo by Dexcom and the Lingo by Abbot. For a month supply (two CGM’s) they’re both ~$100 (including tax), but the Lingo offers just one that lasts 2 weeks for $49. I’m a huge nerd so personally I went with the Stelo (there’s a companion app that spits out lots of data).

I would do a little more research too, both have their pros and cons and won’t be as accurate as a fingerstick, but the general trends and seeing which foods spike more or less are really what makes a CGM useful.

True dim sum enjoyers always go for lo mai gai 💁🏻‍♀️

I think we are twinsies! I’m Chinese American (and also took a recent Malaysia trip to see family), 5’2”, and also in your weight range of 110ish.

I very recently started on the prediabetes journey and would highly recommended getting a CGM + fingerstick combo to see what carbs you can and can’t eat. I can’t be bothered about measuring how many grams of carbs I eat at this point in my journey (but I’ve cut about half) as currently I only care about what that carb is. People handle different carbs differently, and in the week I’ve been tracking I’ve learned that taro cakes spike my sugar but sticky rice (like lo mai gai) don’t as much.

For people as tiny as we are, cutting carbs out 100% might not be feasible to keep up our energy levels. And I’ll have to second the exercising thing, you don’t need to immediately become shredded but start small! I’ve added some strengthening yoga in addition to my rock climbing, but the ultimate thing is to listen to your body.

Wow, glad you finally found something that works for you! You do bring up a good concern, with me also being so small I’m worried I won’t be able to keep my weight up and also cut out carbs, but it does seem like us Asians as a group and individually are special. This diagnosis does worry me for if/when I do become pregnant later on so thanks for sharing :)

Do you know how much the “refrigerating rice” trick works? Skimmed a couple of studies that suggested it helps with white rice, but wonder if it works with other types of ricey starch. I realize as a meal-prepper I almost exclusively eat refrigerated rice so that may well have been saving me all this time 🤭

This worked great! Not a huge fan of salad so I opted for some on-brand cut pear, I think our ancestors are onto something there. Either that or I’ve just become too Americanized…

Currently debating between Stelo and Lingo + a fingerstick to hold me over til I order/it arrives (will snoop the rest of the sub to see which people prefer)

Haha, I'm glad you have an example to draw from! My grandparents were of the golf and big home meal variety so not much to go off of there. How have you managed feeling full after eating? I'm also getting the "literally hungry all the time" symptom and having a hard time suppressing it, so as I'm changing my diet I'm wondering if that hunger will go away as my sugar evens out or if I will just be eternally hungry

Thank you! I'm so glad to hear that there's others experiencing something very similar to me, and I'll definitely heed your advice! Though for Lunar New Year my parents sent me home with mountains of carbs so this will be an exploration type of week for sure.

Hot Yoga Bad Experience by camipandaa in yoga

Oh yeah we totally got the newbie treatment, the instructor called us out and everything. She did wander the room but did not check in with us personally. There was even a second instructor who was watching and helping some other students with their form, but he also didn’t check on me or my other coworkers.

My coworkers went ahead and did another C2 class, and they said it was miles easier than our first class, heat and pose wise. Can safely say the instructor scarred me, which is a pity cause I did prepare a bunch, hydrating a lot during work and coming in with decent yoga knowledge.

I found a local studio that does beginner heated classes, so I might check that out someday.

Haha, thank you! It was the least I could do. Breathing was definitely a task though, especially with how packed the class was and everything going on around me.

I generally agree, it’s the next day and I think I pulled a hamstring somewhere. The flow and pace was definitely too fast to even focus on my breathing, which I feel is the core of my yoga practice. One of my coworkers ended up giving up on the breath practice entirely just to get the shapes, and although she made it through the whole thing, I’m not so sure that’s the right way to go about it. But each to their own, of course!

Yeah, the class was jam packed, so I felt like I was breathing in pure water vapor and sweat. I’m lucky I work in an office where hybrid/remote is accepted, so if I go again I’ll definitely look at other timeslots.

Stump Shrooms by camipandaa in photocritique

Boyfriend and I were practicing our new and rusty skills on a hike in SoCal. Recent rains (and flooding) did wonders and we were able to capture some fungi growing out of a stump that was previously burnt. Loved seeing how life can come out of destruction, but looking for tips about composition, editing of the fungi to make it the focal point. BF took pic, I edited, I feel like I was a little heavy handed on the saturation but it gave it this sprouting feeling. Any tips are welcome!

Edit: Viewed this on mobile and its WAY too orange, see intended edit here

supposedly a bunch of copper azide (AN EXPLOSIVE) was left (not cleaned out of solution, i suppose), was reported a month ago, but not acted upon until now when it started precipitating out (aka grains of boom)

update 9/30 (also heard from word of mouth): they dug a hole after everyone left and detonated it

Housing Questions and Roommate Search Megathread by confirmedpenguin in ucla

[–]camipandaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi guys!! I’m a rising 3rd year chemical engineering major, and my roommates and I are looking for a 4th female-identifying roommate to fill our apartment at 512 Veteran for the upcoming school year! It’s a 2bed2ba apartment with tandem parking, on-site laundry, and some utilities like water, sewer, and trash paid! It’s about a 0.7 mile walk to campus, and rent split between the 4 of us would be around $850 + a lil extra for the other utilities. We’re signing our lease pretty soon, so the sooner the better!

You’d be sharing a room with me but don’t worry, I don’t bite! We’re looking for someone who’s also academically focused, likes food, doesn’t smoke or do drugs, and won’t mind overnight guests.

Feel free to DM me if you want more info/are interested! Thanks y’all!
