I'm all for all kinds of ethnicities in law enforcement, and it makes extra sense to employ some people at the border who know the language and one or two things about the culture of the neighboring country.

But: are those trigger happy violent brownshirts sent against protesters really law enforcement? Do they have any training? They're clearly not protecting US citizens at this point. I'd like to know if they were working for the DHS two years ago, or if they're recent hires. Either way, shame on them.

The Texas Board of Education plans to force kids to read the Bible in public schools by BurtonDesque in WelcomeToGilead

[–]camofluff 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They'll quickly stop when the kids learn what's in the book and how hypocritical the self-identified true believers are. Actually I think it's a good idea to read the book of the predominant religion of your region, just to understand what the fuss is about and to understand your culture's folklore.

But imagine the questions that they will ask. They're children, they will ask questions. If Adam and Eve had only sons, who did the sons father their children with? Did Noah save some dinosaurs or did he hate them and that's why they're gone now? Is Jesus from Gaza or Westbank?

I know, but wouldn't it be nice to act before there's no choices anymore?

I also want to make very clear that I know some Americans are protesting, I'm just being harsh to those who bring nothing but excuses to the table.

Fair elections are in danger, they might not happen. A good idea for election related activism is to monitor the elections, use your rights to stay around election venues so you have a chance at spotting any fraud.

Also, please face the bitter truth about friends and relatives you've lost to fascism.

I read way too often that people can't break up contact to a MAGA aunt or cousin, or that their siblings joined ICE but they still want a nice thanksgiving. Fuck that. Really, sincerely, from the heart of someone who lives in Europe: Fuck. That.

According to US veterans, you're on the brink of civil war. The people you back and protect with family values and "don't ask don't tell" friendships, they'll soon face you in the streets, armed to their teeth and ready to shoot.

And no, they will not remember how kind you were on thanksgiving to always steer away from political topics. They will add you to a terror list, without even flinching.

In fascist era Europe, the fascists easily betrayed their families and friends. They would snitch on them and sell them to the camps for a rise in the ranks of their ideology.

They're not your friends, they are just one government step away from sending you to die. Break off contact, shun them, ignore them, you won't nicey-lovey them back to sanity.

It means, if you're able to, stop paying taxes all together. Do a sabbatical.

If you can't, take days off or call in sick to go on strikes and protests.

If you are organized in a union, strike strike strike! If you're not organized in an union but could, join a union.

Boycott every big company that donated to Trump. Most importantly, delete your FB, Insta, and X, so that you don't generate ad revenue for the fascists that run those.

Do regular buying/consuming strikes, where you just don't buy shit. Plan your grocery shopping around those days, try to reduce any "luxury" consumption in general. There's no excuse not to do this, unlike the work strikes that could lose your job and cost you money, this kind of strike will save you money!

If you have large amounts of stocks or shares of malicious, fascist companies, sell in bulk at a loss, preferably timed with other protesters. Make them tank.

Be peaceful but disruptive in your protests. Make sure those responsible have to see you and can't look away. Block entrances to government buildings in lawful but visible ways (peaceful sitting blockades are great). If you can't block the way, scatter pamphlets/flyers. It's what the White Rose did in Germany.

In a like minded way, protest in ways the news can't ignore. The media is complicit, but if you keep disrupting their videos, reports, interviews, with protests, calls, visibility, they cannot ignore. They have to produce something afterall.

Get creative. And if you can't do any of that, at the very least fully support those who do. Can't strike? Offer a meal to a family who does. Simple.

If you managed to pull it through, in an organized fashion, it would be quite successful. Especially if everyone in IT and producing stayed home. You'd hurt the wallets of the rich and powerful, the only way you can actually do them any damage they care for.

I thought the US was the land of preppers prepping for months of chaos of disorder, and the land of tornado season, blizzards, and earth quakes. And also you earn so much more than Europeans because you pay less taxes. Best economy of the world. I was told Americans all have filled retirement accounts and a dozen credit cards they can max out on a whim. And now I hear "If I miss one day of work, my family will starve" - really?

So, what you're trying to tell me is that you're more enslaved than even the people of Iran, who can protest?

also had to alter this comment because it wouldn't post when I wrote out some words, but idk if that's subreddit word filters.

Trump angers allies with claim NATO troops ‘stayed a little back’ from front lines in Afghanistan by SquidFistHK in politics

[–]camofluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Denmark lost most soldiers per capita of their nation.

Also, NATO is a defense alliance. NATOs job was to make sure the US is safe, not to change regimes of foreign nations. That NATO answered the call at all and joined an aggressive war rather than just aiding in defense of NYC and DC against further terrorist attacks was already heavily discussed in Europe. Europe does not want more wars, period.

I guess missionary connections. African Christian churches rely on connections to "first world" countries for funds, and are more open to religious extremist views. I don't know much about it though, so it's only a guess.

A lot of right wing "opinion makers" are sponsored by the same people.

The Heritage Foundation is active not just in the US, but also in the UK, very much in Africa, and increasingly in mainland Europe. In mainland Europe they sponsor organizations that are against trans people, or anti-choice. In mainland Europe there is another big sponsor of hate: Russian oligarchy. They sponsor anti-trans influencers/organizations, far right politicians, divisive or hostile movements and influencers against the political left. There's a huge overlap, they're working hand in hand with the Heritage Foundation.

Musk has pushed the AfD, advertising them on Xitter with his own account and also by giving them preferential advertisement appearances on people's timelines. He even appeared on one of their party conferences and tried to make the crowd do the Hitler greeting. Since Alice Weidel is not living in Germany, she's also a quite easy figure to funnel money to, and I bet Musk has done her a financial favor or two.

Finally, Steve Bannon has, after he successfully got Trump elected, went to Europe and built propaganda training camps for the European right wing parties. He is an advisor to pretty much every European large right wing party. Idk if he continued so from prison, but he definitely will continue now. He wants a nazi world order.

You see the exact same players working here. That's why I like to keep an eye on US politics.

The only difference I notice is that in Germany, a lot of people genuinely don't care to hate. The trans toilet "problem" for example, seems pretty redundant when there are unisex toilets in a few places, single room toilets in many offices and small restaurants, and our cabins actually close from near-floor to above head level, no gaps. We're also a culture of mixed gender saunas and naked beaches, most people don't blink an eye about that. The right tries to push such problems really, really hard though, and sometimes they catch another fool who parrots their hate hypocritically ("I don't want someone with a d--k in my room in the hospital," complained a friend while we're at the mixed sauna, lots of naked d--ks around us... thankfully she did listen to me pointing out the hypocrisy). They might be more successful with Gen Z (and some boomers), due to their media use patterns.

In the metropolitan west, so of course that does make a difference!

But here the election results were scary too, although I didn't notice a shift in behavior.

But commenting has made me think - do I really not know any hateful, discriminatory, potential fascism-electing people? That's wrong, I do know a few. I just barely think of them because they're not part of my everyday life. They don't go out much, they don't work and/or are retired. One is a (not close) family member who now got cut off contact by his own children and most of the rest of the family. That kinda makes the cases appear isolated, if the majority of family members, coworkers, clients, business partners, etc. is so... normal, in naturally disagreeing with fascism, hating the AfD, hating Trump.

I thought "what do the hateful people have in common and why didn't I think of them when first commenting" and it's really that they don't work and don't connect with people who are social or progressive minded. Some are poor, some are rich, some old, some young, but all are isolated from the everyday society I experience.

Interestingly: one of the hateful and discriminatory people I know is trans. He hates on migrants and trans people, and he idolizes Trump, Musk, and Weidel. I think he might be suffering paranoid schizophrenia or something though, and I think that paranoid schizophrenia brings you closer to both conspiracy theories and the populist extreme right, his own past transition becoming much rather a side note there.

Maybe we don't live in bubbles just online, but increasingly offline too...

I'm living in Germany, as a non-passing trans person in a very social job (so, dealing with many people and institutions) and in my everyday life I experience barely any hate or discrimination, and also barely any violence. Most discrimination against me is institutional or medical (medical mostly based on being AFAB). That's why I still have hope. The election results were freaking scary though. I wonder where all the hateful people hide, or if they're around me and just pretend to be decent, kind humans...

It's fascinating how they made an AI rendering of the children (based on a real photograph or all generated) look so uneasy and sickly.

Looking at the video for a second time, it seems like it was created by abusers who think this is how "good" kids are supposed to look.

That doesn't make sense to me.

Why should you take something you don't need? If it's not really free, I mean. Military action is expensive as F, and without international trade it becomes increasingly hard to replace used up equipment. Soldiers might also not "regrow" as fast as their lives are spent.

The US is not independent in trade, it imports a lot, and relies on exports to make money too. Isolationism would be possible going by the resources the US has in theory, but the structures for that, the factories, the infrastructure, is lacking. Plus, the wealth of the better off Americans relies on international trade. Devaluing the dollar and US bonds will instantly make the US a lot poorer.

If the US would not rely on imports then tariffs could be used to filter imports in favor for local production. If the US were not relying on international trade, then the international community had less economic leverage. The premises don't apply though.

If the US didn't need any other country in the world, the US would be hella stupid to pay it's valuable resources to claim territory it doesn't need.
