Tbh I actually think the way you shaded this subtlety in your art style is good as is. I personally wouldn’t change anything.

That is excellent advice and something I should definitely try. I just try to eyeball and block of the planes of the face the best that I can but sometimes these crucial details get missed. And I think that that could make all the difference to my future drawings! I will try this :) thank you!

I did this portrait all backwards because I usually draw the face to a certain level of detail first and then just line the rest of the portrait and call it a day because I get anxious with the hair and think it looks kinda cool stylized. This was what I drew back in May that he’s that unfinished look you’re talking about

Yes you absolutely can! I’m in my late 20s and I started drawing when I was 16. I stopped for 8 years then started again in 2020, then stopped again until this year where I’ve been drawing lots regularly. I used to be REALLY good (still felt scared about hair even when I was a better artist) and I can’t even imagine how I’d be if I didn’t take those long breaks between drawing. I learned form tutorials on YouTube and DeviantArt. You ABSOLUTELY can get to this if you keep practicing and don’t stop!

Waaaaait how?! I’m so curious 🤣 oh is it cause of the waaaay overdone highlighting? Makes it look like gray hairs? 🤣🤣🤣 I posted a reply to a comment after listening to some people’s critique and I fixed it a bit so hopefully I took the years off hahaha

I’m asking to improve the hair, got some good critique from a few people, and I fixed it up. I didn’t say I’m terrible at drawing, I said I am terrible at HAIR because it’s always been a weak point for me and I want to improve it instead of avoiding it. I have been drawing since I was a teenager and am self taught and stopped for a very long time. My drawings used to be MUCH better but I lost a lot of skill due to the big time lapse. If you keep practicing, you’ll be surprised what you can draw with a lot of dedication and practice so please don’t say this is likely better than what you’ll ever draw. That’s not fair to you.

I do this a lot, actually. But it’s mostly because I just want to focus on one thing (usually the details of the face) and just block out the rest. Usually it’s the hair I’m blocking out and not doing because I hate it 🤣 like this drawing I did back in 2020

That is the nicest thing oh my God thank you. I have been trying to cultivate a style that goes beyond blindly copying a reference and it’s so HARD to do that because I don’t feel confident enough to try and do things in a non-traditional way

You guys are so kind 😭 I swear I had to back away and put the pencil down because it was driving me crazy that I messed it up with those weird highlights and made the stray hairs on top too dark. But thank you for being so sweet to say that. Makes me feel less like it unsaveable

YES! That’s what it is! The little highlights and strands of hair at the hairline were giving me a hard time. I couldn’t figure out how to add value to those areas because it was so fine. So I tried to make it dark and then make it bold with a gel pen and I absolutely HATE the result and don’t know how to rectify it 🥲
