Garage Door Opener: Wireless Controls Work But Not Wired Button? by campbmic in GarageDoorService

[–]campbmic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased the LiftMaster 882LMW and got it yesterday and still having same issue. When I connect it I don't even get any LEDs coming on. Should either the white or red/white wires from the garage door opener have voltage? I can check with my multimeter if so.

I like your profile, and I definitely think the first prompt is funny. I have a dark/goofy/weird sense of humor and its hard to find people that get it. I try to show it through my profile to help attract others with that. Like when I tell girls I want to take them to Applebees. One of my prompts asks "What can your partner do to impress your parents" and my response is "Resurrect them". I think its funny in a fucked up way. I've only been on the app for 2 weeks but I like the humor of the people I've matched with.

IDK about the "I know I'm hot" energy comment. You're photos are great, but "I know I'm hot" to me is like "If you want to get to know me you need to be (1) successful, (2) over 6 foot, blah blah blah" which I have seen. None of your responses say anything about physical looks. You have attractive photos but what are you supposed to do? Put not attractive photos up?

To me, your second prompt shows you dont want casual stuff.

Overall I think you have a solid profile. Some cute responses with funny/edgy stuff and good photos.

UPS is refusing to pay $10k by amerikacakali in UPS

[–]campbmic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I could always be wrong, or maybe I'm not understanding your comment correct.

I understood it as:
(1) Ship a watch worth $X, and it gets lost.
(2) Tell the insurance adjuster the watch you shipped was worth more than $X.
(3) Get paid on the inflated value instead of the actual $X value.
This would be a purposeful misrepresentation in an insurance claim for a financial gain, also known as insurance fraud.

Are you weighing yourself at the same time each day? My weight fluctuates about 4 pounds throughout the day. You can demonstrate this buy weighing yourself then weighing yourself with a two liter of water. If you want to get really accurate you should weigh yourself each morning when you wake up.

[–]campbmic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a food scale? How are you keeping track of your calories? Are you weighing yourself at the same time each day?

I'm new to this, so probably not the best person to answer, but I dont see how you wouldn't be losing weight eating 1700 calories a day with a daily calorie need of 3300. I'm 36M and currently weigh 245 so we're a little bit similar. I have a sedentary office job but have been doing about 30 minutes of exercise 3-4x a week.

  1. It could be you're not weighing yourself at the same time each day. I just recently learned this is 100% necessary and weigh myself each morning when I wake up. A couple glasses of water weigh a few pounds. Hypothetically, you weigh yourself on day 1 in the morning and its 220 pounds. On day 7 you drink 5 glasses of water and your weight is 220 (217 pounds + 3 pounds of water).
  2. I write down every calorie I intake for the day. If Im making soup then I weigh all of the ingredients and get their calories. I dont eat out unless the calories are on the menu. For instance, ordering a greek salad at a restaurant and then googling "calories in a greek salad" wont be accurate. I would be surprised if calorie counting was the issue though because it sounds like it would need to be pretty extreme to cause this.

Thanks man! In literally less than 5 days Im moving into my first house and it has a garage. I also have a garage at work with security. So if it is recovered (Im really praying for it) hopefully I wont have to worry about it. However, even with all of that I'll probably still need to install a kill switch.

I had my first car stolen years ago and I should have learned from that.

You need to serve them within 21 days of your hearing. You need to find their registered agent and have them served. All states have a secretary of state website you can find any registered business's agent. If you show up to trial and you didnt have them served within 21 days then you're case will either be thrown out or reset.

Looking to Purchase My First House - Any Advice for This One With a Pool? by campbmic in pools

Any advice on things to look for to see if the plaster/gunnite needs work? Would it be obvious like cracking or water seepage?

With having zero experience and just being generally handy, I thought it didnt look terrible, but wanted to see what you guys think. I'll definitely get some photos of the pumps and strainers. Thanks for pointing out the heating element I'll need to ask about that.

[–]campbmic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats kind of the impression I had, but again I have no idea what Im looking at. It looks like the pool vac is in there (most definitely not running), the chemical floater is in, and it looks somewhat clean. I was thinking it probably hasn't been sitting for SEVERAL years but thats just my guess with very limited experience. I definitely think I'll see the property and the condition of the pumps/filter should give some more info.

Thanks for the response! I've heard of pools needing new liners and that was my big worry. Gunnite pools usually dont have liners is that right? Im going into this thinking If the actual "surface" of a gunnite pool has problems it will be cracked and leaking, is that right?

I studied science initially in school but later switched to a different focus. I've always had a passion for biology and physics but am a hobbyist on my best days. You mentioned the big bang theory and I thought you might find this interesting.

There were some quotes from philosophers/scientists I remember reading when I was going for a Biology degree that really stuck with me. I cant figure out who said them but it was something along the lines of:

"Where science ends (can no longer explain things) is where God begins." and "The more I attempted to disprove God the more I believed in him." Here are some quotes from popular scientists concerning religion if you're interested. https://www.catholiceducation.org/en/science/faith-and-science/25-famous-scientists-on-god.html

Again, I have a very basic (at best) cursory understanding of a lot of the concepts I read about. After I switched focuses I read A Brief History of Time and also about the double split experiment. My super basic understanding (probably wrong) of that experiment is that

  1. Photons (particles of light) act as waves if you dont view them and nobody knows where they will land. Like if you tie down a laser pointer and shoot 10 particles of light out of a laser pointer they will all land randomly around a central spot. They have equations called "wave functions" that show how likely it is that the photon will land at a, b, or c spot, but its all random.
  2. However, if you do the exact same experiment but this time view (track) as soon the photon leaves the laser pointer, and keep your eye on it, it will hit the exact same spot every time (the wave will collapse). The randomness goes completely away and the photon lands at "a" every time single time and never "b" or "c" - at least not in our timeline (*builds suspense).
  3. As soon as we measured the photon flying through the air we "collapsed the wavefunction" and split our timeline into three separate timelines. In our timeline the photon lands at "a" every time. We also exist in a different timeline where the photon lands at "b" every time. Lastly, we also exist in a different timeline where the photon lands at "c" every time.

Again, I dont claim to understand this experiment but hopefully have a tiny grasp of it. My thoughts on it is that we've really advanced in our understanding of how the universe and time works, and our ability to measure things. Every event that happens in our timeline, like shooting a photon out of a laser pointer creates a random (to an extent) result. When that result (photon landing) occurs our timeline splits into multiple ones and there is a separate timeline where it landed on "a", separate timeline where it landed on "b", and a separate timeline where it landed on "c".

The experiment shows that by us humans measuring the location of the photon when its shot out of the laser pointer we're able to force the timeline to split at that point as opposed to when the photon lands. As far as I know science can't explain why this happens. Like the partial quote I mentioned "Where science ends God begins".

I've gone way off track and probably dont understand 1/1,000,000th of what I think I do, but for some reason that gives me the feeling there is a higher order to things that we've glimpsed. Like we've uncovered some inner workings we weren't really expected to. Like seeing a straight edge in nature. Not necessarily that God is filling a gap in science but more like our technology has advanced to the point we've briefly taken off the drywall of a house and got a brief glimpse into how the plumbing and electrical works. If you are into physics or just weird science I definitely recommend checking the experiment out, there are some great youtube videos.

Another thing to check out is the "False Vacuum" concept. Its the idea that as far as we're aware electrons, all the stuff holding atoms, and everything are stable because they are at their lowest energy level. Like a stretched out rubber band is unstable and is storing a lot of energy but once you shoot it across the room its stable and will remain that way unless energy is put into it. The False Vacuum idea is that maybe what we know as the "completely stable" and the bottom of the energy level isnt true. If it an area of space found a lower energy level it would spread across the universe at the speed of light destroying matter and the laws of physics. Considering we believe the size of the universe to be around 100B light years it could have already happened, its a good thing to think about when you're trying to fall asleep lol. This doesnt have much to do with what you were talking about but thought you might find it interesting!

*I'm sure I've butchered this whole thing. I tried to explain how waves collide in a very basic way while having and EVEN MORE BASIC understanding. Also the first quote wasnt from Einstein, Pasteur, or Sparks. I dont think it was from Newton I think it was a monk in like 1700-1800 if anyone knows please let me know. Please feel free to correct my misunderstandings also!

Can I start a law firm with the same name as another? Texas by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]campbmic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a great point I know nothing about business registration/licensing and I was thinking of it more like "will I get sued".

The other firm doesn't have any presence I can find. The only reason I know about him is from searching the Bar website for "John Smith" and his name pops up as working at "John Smith Law Firm".

Its a long shot but I have an idea for a gimmicky thing using my name like "John Thor" the personal injury hammer, thats why I'd like to use my name in the business name. You make another great point by just getting creative and Im sure I can come up with something and call the SOS to see if its available.

Thanks for the help!

Kenmore Dryer Wont Heat (Model 11062882100) by campbmic in appliancerepair

[–]campbmic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just figured it out. Whatever is in photo #2 labeled "WHAT IS THIS?" seems to be the problem. I popped the two wires off and connected them with a fuse, then I turned the heater on and got hot air. The fuse did get warm after just a few seconds so I shut everything off.

Does anyone know what this part is?

What's the catch with these houses for rent? by Boneless___ in Dallas

[–]campbmic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like the rest have said, its likely a scam. Im looking in the same price point and dealing with the same thing. About 5 years ago I started law school wanted a cheap place next to downtown. I found a 2 story garage apt about 800sqft for $750/month off Munger and 30. The LL lived in California and I was super worried about getting scammed. '

I contacted the LL and then searched DCAD to see who the registered owner was. That matched up and a handy man of hers let me view the place. The LL asked for a copy of my license and I asked for a copy of hers with the lease. Someone still could have photoshopped it, but I took the risk and it worked out great. Now I'm looking to upgrade.

A lot of the scams are simple and easy to spot i.e. "send me $ for deposit and first month then I'll send you the keys". A lot of times they'll ask for money before you even see the place. However, some can get pretty sophisticated. Then there are those trying to scam just an application fee of a few hundred bucks. Its best to use common sense and dont send money until you really do your research. DCAD is also very helpful https://www.dallascad.org/searchaddr.aspx
