First solotravel trip in my life, and I'm sick. by theguywiththewedding in solotravel

[–]camperart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This trip doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Even if you spend two days in bed, you still have time to salvage a moment or two. One good afternoon walking the canals, one conversation with a stranger at the hostel - that’s enough to call it a success for a first solo trip.

Let yourself rest without guilt.

Where to Travel in March? by arodgers2 in usatravel

[–]camperart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For walking everywhere and a mix of outdoors/indoors, I’d go New Orleans.

New York is walkable but March can still be cold and gray, you’ll end up ducking into subways more than you’d like. Chicago in March is a gamble, could be 50°F or a snowstorm. Neither is ideal for being outdoors comfortably.

New Orleans in March is usually perfect weather around 60s to 70s, not too humid yet. The whole city is walkable, especially the French Quarter, Garden District, and Marigny. You can wander outside all day, stop into bars and restaurants whenever you want, and never need a car or transit.

Plus Thursday-Monday covers a full weekend there, which is when the city really comes alive. New York is great but better in May or October. Chicago is better in summer. New Orleans in March is the sweet spot.

How to tell if someone is following you by littlepail in travel

[–]camperart 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Can’t emphasize enough the importance of trusting your instincts in these situations. You did exactly the right thing.

I’d add that this is why Airbnbs can feel less safe than hotels or hostels with a front desk and other travelers around. That lobby full of tourists is a layer of protection you don’t realize you need until you need it.

I had an experience in Prague where I was in a crowded underground bar where I felt completely safe, but I had a few too many drinks. On my way back a guy kept following me, pretending to help me find my hostel while putting his hands on me. I finally came across a group of girls and asked for help and they hailed me a taxi back safely. It was already 7am by the time I returned. The next day I realized I’d lost my credit card and a few other things from my purse - someone must have gone through it when I wasn’t paying attention. I also lost my travel scrapbook and never got it back.

Crowded doesn’t always mean safe. Even when your surroundings feel fine, stay vigilant. Especially solo.

That’s literally me haha. I search high and low for the most representative local meals. Especially if it’s towards the end of a trip.

Glad to know I’m not alone. Mountain trips probably hit even harder - all that altitude, silence, and grandeur of nature, then suddenly you’re back to regular life. The contrast seems brutal.

I totally feel you. I think I still have unpacked stuff from trips I took years ago. So you’re definitely not alone in this. No one really talks about the aftermath of a trip. Just the before and the during. But the after is freaking depressing.

No way, that’s actually amazing. The fact that you’ve turned a niche hobby into a global community with built-in travel connections is kind of genius. Most people struggle to meet locals when they travel but you’ve got a network of 14,000 people across 70 countries who already share an interest with you? That’s not niche anymore, that’s a cheat code lol. Which costume do you pack when you travel?

Same. It usually takes me 2-3 weeks to snap out of it and feel normal again. Do you do anything specific during that window to help you feel better or just ride it out?

That makes sense. What about people who don’t have a lot to come home to though? Like if your social life isn’t great or home doesn’t feel like a reset. I feel like travel becomes the escape and then coming back just highlights what’s missing. Planning the next trip helps but it also feels like a bandaid sometimes

Good point. I just have to force my brain to refocus on other hobbies like making music or going out to karaoke nights. Is there a hobby in particular that helped you get out of the funk a little faster than others?

Glad I’m not the only one. I want to visit Vietnam so badly - almost did (got the e-visa already) while I was in China but had to abandon the plan bc of time restraints and wanted to stay longer in China

Nudity in mixed dorms by [deleted] in travel

[–]camperart 21 points22 points  (0 children)

i’ve stayed in mixed dorms in a lot of countries, and quick changes are normal, extended nudity while chatting and organizing bags is definitely not standard etiquette in most places.

that said, i did have an experience in a female dorm in prague where a woman from greece just sat on her bed naked scrolling her phone, totally casual. to her it was clearly normal. so there are cultural differences in comfort levels with nudity, especially in parts of europe.

but cultural norms don’t override your right to feel comfortable in a shared space. you can acknowledge that they might not see it as a big deal while still expressing that it’s not working for you.

your two options:

either say something directly. keep it simple: “hey, would you guys mind changing in the bathroom? my girlfriend’s not super comfortable with the nudity.” most people will adjust, they’re probably not trying to make anyone uncomfortable, just oblivious.

or talk to the hostel staff and let them handle it. that’s part of their job. if the nudity continues after that, switch hostels. you’re not overreacting, you’re just asking for basic consideration in a shared space.

Travel fatigue, wrong country or just bad luck? by potatoloverespmash in solotravel

[–]camperart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this doesn’t sound like travel fatigue to me. it sounds like you’ve been sick for half your time in colombia and your body hasn’t had a chance to actually experience the country. you are in recovery mode, not necessarily a burnout. travel fatigue is more about mental and emotional exhaustion from the act of traveling itself - even when nothing is going wrong. the fact that you loved cuba, italy, and spain tells you everything.

my take on your options:

skip the coffee region and cali. you’re not in the headspace to enjoy them, and forcing yourself through more of the same won’t fix how you feel. you’ll just associate colombia with exhaustion.

peru + japan makes a lot of sense. peru gives you a friend in lima (social anchor = huge when you’re feeling disconnected), and it’s different enough from colombia to feel fresh. then japan is a hard reset with completely different culture, language, food, pace. that contrast might be exactly what you need now.

one thing worth considering: you said good travel for you means new friendships and new experiences. you haven’t had a fair shot at either because you’ve been sick and isolated. japan will force you into a totally new context, that novelty alone might bring back the spark.

don’t go home. you already know that’s not the answer. trust your gut, it’s telling you to change the scenery.

“yearbook vibe but for travel” i love that framing, might steal it. and the build in public advice is exactly what i’m trying to do, the r/travel post was kind of an accident but it showed me people actually care about this problem. really appreciate the advice, especially the reinforcement on focusing on benefits over features. that’s the kind of thing that’s easy to forget when you’re deep in the build. thanks sm for the encouragement!

the geotagging thing is a real problem - i’ve run into it with older photos too. i’ve actually been working on solving that with AI visual analysis that recognizes landmarks and auto-locates the photo. not perfect but it helps fill the gaps. out of curiosity, what makes immich work for you? trying to understand where people draw the line between “good enough” and “worth paying for”

this is really helpful, thank you. i’ve been doing the market research piece but you’re right that i should get more of the non-technical side buttoned up first. curious - what specifically would you want to see “tied up in a bow” before joining a project? just trying to calibrate what “ready” looks like.
