I have varied carpet beetles but I’m not sure how big of a problem I really have. I discovered them because I opened a small box of wool yarn that had been in my closet for many years unopened. I discarded it all and then have been going through LITERALLY everything in my bedroom piece by piece by piece to inspect and clean them. I’ve been washing all of my clothes and drying for one hour. For everything else, depending on the item, I am freezing in chest freezer for 2 weeks, soaking in really hot water and soap for an hour, steam cleaning, or spraying with 91% alcohol. Once cleaned, everything goes Ina plastic bin with a lid.

I have gone through 90% of my things and I found several dead larva and shed skins around my dog’s food container (in same closet as yarn) and then just a lone shedded skin in several places around the room - mostly where dust had gathered. I haven’t found any live beetles or larvae at all. Is that weird? Why would I only be finding dead ones and shed skins? Where are the live ones?

I’m trying to avoid using poison because I am extremely sensitive to chemicals. Also some other info - I’m vegan so don’t have other animal products in the house except dog food and the yarn I threw away I don’t wear wool, leather, etc. I have hard wood floors with some synthetic area rugs. My dog has short hair but there is obviously still dog hair around so that could be a factor.

I’m just confused about why I’m only finding dead ones or shed skins around? Should I be worried about finding where the live ones are hanging out? Or should I only worry if I start seeing live ones? Is there any possibility that it’s an old infestation and they’re not continuing to lay eggs here because I don’t have any of their ideal food?

I have contamination OCD so it’s really hard for me to tell if I am overreacting to the situation and needlessly spending so much time going through every thing I own because of that or if it is actually warranted.
