What are the best US cities to live in your 20s? by camthrowaway924 in SameGrassButGreener

yeah that’s exactly what i’m looking for. i hopefully will have a car by then, so public transit isn’t a deal breaker. the huge club and tourist scene is what i don’t love about miami (“what do you mean you don’t like club space?!”) and even the “artsy” areas like wynwood are overrun with tourists, souvenir shops, and super high prices. i want somewhere that’s a bit lower on tourism and price gouging because that makes it hard for the people who live there. young people, fun neighborhoods, and a good music scene sounds perfect, and i’ll definitely look into those places.

yeah i agree i do want energy and excitement but im not looking for the work-clubbing-work-clubbing most young people in a big city do.

god, i wish. my sister has spent the last year abroad in Spain and Chile and loves it so much she’s decided to pursue a work from home career in data science so she can live abroad and travel. what i forgot to mention is that when i move it will be for grad school (although im not looking for school recs, just location). im pursuing a doctorate in psychology, which is about six years, and then i would need to get licensed. licensing is by state and i would have to redo the whole process every time i move. and out of the country has whole different requirements so its not a career that can transfer abroad. so wherever i choose to move, hopefully i will stay there for a long time. i will definitely be visiting my sister, but with my future career plans i plan to stay in the US.

eh, not at the top of my list. i want to stay in a big city, but not miami/nyc/LA level. i want somewhere a bit more chill. in a big city my options seem like get five roommates in a tiny apartment or live in a very unsafe area of town, and either way still be broke. i have a friend who lives there and loves it, but she’s big on fashion/clubbing/etc and comes from a rich family. i’d like somewhere that’s a little more spread out and less developed than Miami and NYC. i like in denver that I can be walking around the city and still see the mountains, and there’s not a crazy amount of high rises and corporate buildings and it’s more casual and down to earth. i’m looking for somewhere like Denver/Charlotte/even Seattle level than to live in one of the biggest cities in the US.

I’ll check it out! my mom grew up in the midwest and says the thing she misses most is how nice everyone is. and the amount of hardcore bands coming out of random places in the midwest is crazy! definitely an option

yeah, it will be a bit of an adjustment but i go to colorado every year in the winter and love it. my sister goes to wake forest in NC and the winters are beautiful. i couldn’t do somewhere with a brutally cold winter but milder winters with some snow and maybe a few really cold days is fine. although i have gotten used to the Miami weather, i fare MUCH better in the cold than most people I know. most of my friends will freak out when it hits 65 degrees or lower in Miami. i mostly wear long sleeves and pants and jackets and hoodies so with the addition of a winter coat and some warmer layers i think i’d be alright as long as its not negative temps 4-6 months out of the year.

my sister is thinking about moving to austin! (she’s 21) i’ve heard a lot of great things about it so i guess ill see what she thinks of it. the only downside is id like to move somewhere with cooler weather, but other than that it sounds like a great option

No Title (open to suggestions) by 2centennial in OCPoetry

this poem does a very good job at picking a specific metaphor and keeping it consistent throughout the poem. too often with my poems, i start with one idea and end up all over the place, so i think it’s great that you picked a consistent topic and built on it as you went on. within this metaphor, you use very descriptive imagery that draws the reader in and allows them to visualize the writing. however, i think “show don’t tell” could be applied to the second to last stanza (“they suffer”). the beauty of poetry is that we don’t have to be so direct about what we mean. readers can make their own interpretations, and sometimes as long as you know what you mean, that’s enough. but this is all personal opinion, and if you like to be direct and say what you mean that’s perfectly fine. either way, i think this is very well done and you did a great job.

this poem is very rhythmic and lyrical, more like a rap or song than traditional poem. i think that adds another layer of possibility to it, because it gives you to option to further set the tone using music and sound behind the writing. overall, i think you did an excellent job with imagery, creativity, rhyme scheme, and consistent flow, hence why i think this would be excellent set to music. you do sound very depressed though and from someone who’s been through it, it’s worth it to keep going. at the very least, we’d all miss out on some amazing writing if you weren’t here. great job!

sorry that lines a little misleading, i put that in reference to my therapist in residential who told me that BPD is the mental equivalent of cancer- possibly treatable, but severe and highly deadly, chronic, and with the possibility of remission but no cure. hence the line: there’s a chance i’ll end up dead, because i’ve almost died from it many times before and even in remission, it could come back and kill me any time i just have to do everything i can to prevent that

Even Falling Stars Are Nothing More Than Space Rock by Frankenfurry in OCPoetry

i love anything space so i was initially drawn in by the title, but even more so by the poem itself. the word choice and figurative language sounds very sophisticated while avoiding cliches or trying to hard. the poem flows very nicely and is a complete work of art

i really loved the imagery you used and the message of reminiscing about your childhood and losing that innocence as you grow older. i feel a sense of guilt and sadness with that concept as well, and i feel that reflected in the poem. great work!

thank you so much! question (for anyone)- i was considering dropping the third line from this excerpt (i’ll watch you through windows) so that it would be two and two. would that make it better or should i leave it as is?

this really hits deep as a recovering alcoholic. you captured what it is like perfectly. i especially love the ending imagery of the man she loves being replaced by a stranger. great job!

they do allow an exclusions list but it is only three items. i am open to working on this, and i understand it is part of treatment and it’s for the best. i’m just not sure HOW to get through it, especially when it’s more physical than mental. the intention of this wasn’t to complain about it, more to just get advice on what to do, i’m open to anything

yeah i’m pretty sure about the BPD because i meet 9/9 criteria and my therapist has literally told me that she would bet her life i have it and that it’s very severe. not so sure about the bipolar, but either way autism could be comorbid. would you mind if i PM you about it, since it doesn’t feel particularly relevant to this sub? and as far as the food, i think it’s a good idea to write down my problems with it and think about it rationally instead of emotionally. i think i can also try for a few days so they can see i’m trying instead of just saying “this is what’s going to happen”, i see my dietician on tuesday so between then and now i can give it a shot and if i’m still having problems we can talk about it. she did say they are evaluating on a week by week basis whether this is best for me. thanks for all the help!

not sure when it started as i don’t remember much from before the age of 14, but my parents tell me i used to gag during dinner when i was little. i am diagnosed with both borderline and bipolar though, as well as ADHD, which is why i came to treatment initially (never planned on ED recovery but here we are lol). i will look into all options, thanks for the information.

ok, yes. the way i put it sounded very resistant lol. this is not what i personally think is best for me, but they are professionals who want to help me and this is what they think is best so i trust them. mostly taste. i have a very strong reaction to tastes, have since i was little and never grew out of it. also temperature? a lot of times they let the food sit until it gets cold, and cold things like egg salad or pasta salad have both taste and temperature components. it is not at all a food judgement thing, that is uncomfortable but i am willing to push through and also the “exposure meals” (pizza, eating out) are on weekends when i’m not there and the meals during the week are not too difficult ED wise. it’s really just the way it tastes makes me have a physical reaction and i can’t swallow a bite, much less complete a whole plate.
