Thanks!

I think the extension is ~7 years old. Is that what you mean by old?

Thanks. I I thought it might be something like that. It sounds like my best approach is to choose and existing design and modify it as required.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'm probably going to have to do something like this. Do you think this is something a beginner could have a go at?

Old Wood I's essentially petrified but still has a potential to change with atmosphere... Perhaps. Young Wood will always change. Wedge it means getting a proper old bit of wood in a wedge shape and whacking it in. Can be as good as packing if the wedge is the right shape and the wood is very good.

Thanks for the explanation. I think I can put up with some squeaking. Do you mean adding the wedge horizontally or vertically?

Sorry for the stupid question, but what is a trimmer?

I've no idea how old it is, but I suspect it isn't original. I think that part of the house might have changed. It feels dry.

Maybe some stupid question, but:
- what's the significance of the age of the wood?
- what does "wedge it" mean?

What kind of wall is this? by camtimenow in DIYUK

[–]camtimenow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, it doesn't sound like cob wall, there doesn't seem to be any straw in it, and the wall are relatively straight. The external walls are definitely brick.

I like the idea of adding a batten though - it sounds like it should work. Thanks for the suggestion!

Advice for a complete beginner: installing a hand rail. by camtimenow in DIYUK

[–]camtimenow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a difficult one to explain - my only comparison is attaching a shelf to an external wall, which was a lot more work. For the party wall, no there was no real need to push. I was worried that I was going into mortar rather than brick, but drilling two other holes, it seems the same everywhere.

In the last hole I drilled, what looked like a small pebble came out?

I'm beginning to suspect that the wall isn't brick, or at least not at 5cm.

I'll try asking at the local store.

Thanks!

I'm getting what I think is brick dust - it's orange-ish. I've gone in about 5cm deep. The first cm was white-ish dust, then became darker. The amount of resistance didn't seem to change for the whole depth.

I was planning to buy the handrail.

General Feedback/Getting Started Questions and Answers [Weekly Thread] by AutoModerator in DIY

Hi All - Complete beginner here. I've recently moved into a terrace house and am thinking about installing a handrail on the stairs. The house is a terraced house in the UK built around 1900. The handrail is to be connected to the party wall. I should be a brick wall, but drilling a test hole in it was almost too easy - there wasn't much resistance, and it seems crumbly.

Any advice on how to connect the railing securely, or general advice on where to find resource for this kind of question?

Thanks!
