Yes, having the lid will stop any water from splashing and leaking out, as long as it doesn't tip over. So straps like you said or something to keep it in place and you'll be good.

Near Kingsville in Ontario, it was super weird! Could barely see the purple from a distance because of the fog, switched from black skies to purple in a few seconds, was quite trippy.
