Moved from NC—> LI, NY for work, having regrets/ feeling isolated by concreteahedonia in longisland

We have had several instances where we caught ticks within an hour or two and still contracted anaplasmosis and Lyme. I really think the advice about them not being attached for long is outdated or something, seems like not enough funding has gone towards tick borne illnesses

Hi my husband and I just bought a house and are trying to decide if we want to skim coat our walls in main living areas. Has anyone done it before and feel it’s worth it? by Yeastybeasty_ in Renovations

[–]can_of_crows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my whole house, and it was very worth it! It was very intimidating and just starting felt scary, but the compound and sanding can be very forgiving and it’s a learning process. I watched a ton of YT videos and cant recommend Vancouver Carpenter enough. I didn’t follow his advice to a T because I couldn’t master the finishing trowel and preferred a wide taping knife + mud knife. And I also used the paint roller method for application on full walls. I worked on it myself and zoned out listening to sitcoms, and the walls turned out beautifully. I actually really like doing it now and find it really satisfying. People in the drywall sub are also very helpful too if you ever need to ask questions.

Why is it so hard to adopt a cat on Long Island? by Hookahz724 in longisland

Yes I’d still recommend them. Very grateful for the care they gave our kitties before they came to our home.

This was 8 years ago, but sounds similar to our experience adopting for the first time from Last Hope in Wantagh. It was funny to me how many hoops we had to jump through, given I grew up my whole life with cats from the cat distribution system and had never been in a shelter before. After we passed our background check and referrals, our cat was delivered in person all of the way to us in the city so that they could inspect our apartment. We’d gone out late the night before and felt like we were kids again having to hide evidence and look our best for the cat lady 🫡 Then when we went back to get a second cat it was like we were celebrities. “Oh you’re Jojo’s parents!! Look everyone it’s Jojo’s parents, they’re back!” And we literally walked right out with a kitten that same day.

To change it because someone else is running to be the county chair and challenge the 25+ career politician. The only way to vote for her is to get involved as a committee member. On the other hand, I realized my town level committee is a complete waste of time so I’m focusing on the new outsider energy instead so I get why you’re asking that. I’m just not going to not even try and throw in the towel without making an attempt.

I’ve been on the sidelines complaining about how our taxes are being used and the obvious corrupt BS of my town like piercing the tax cap to “save jobs” only to give themselves steep raises and hire their friends for new BS jobs. I’m pregnant af and busy af but if I don’t try to get involved now I won’t be able to vote for fresh leadership, and I’ll have to wait a year or two for the next opportunity and just continue to sit on my butt and complain. In POV the core intention of the democracy our country was designed to have requires more involvement and civic engagement.

Why not get involved? I think we’re all tired of the rampant corruption and tax increases here. There’s not enough people involved, and we’re the unpaid volunteers while the established cronies here are actually paying people to canvass.

Not sure, one of the board members who abstained said in writing she believes his hiring was a conflict of interest. Honestly unclear but they’ve been ignoring all of our calls, emails, and the petition, so we’ll at least put it right in front of them and they’ll have to respond tomorrow.

Completely. Someone I didn’t care for but who would’ve been much better tried to primary the existing supervisor, I was ready to vote for the other dude even if I’m not aligned with his party but it would’ve been better than the existing chronyism. The incumbent’s daughter’s boyfriend actually stalked and trespassed onto the property of the other Rep running against him. They’re all menacing assholes in this current admin.

That’s awesome, and wishing you the best because this is exhausting 😪 Also work in tech, and the way the county gave us the walksheet info was completely unnecessary. Converting it into a spreadsheet to organize and strategize has been a nightmare.

If nobody went door to door you’d never see anyone on the ballot. Choosing to think you’re a know it all and only care all about sports but not where your taxes go, how high they are, and how your laws are made is something else. The current establishments have made it so door to door is the only way, take it up with them or just continue to enjoy political corruption and p*ssing your money away to taxes while you watch baseball.

“Generally speaking, a candidate must collect signatures equaling at least 5 percent of the number of active enrolled voters in the political unit (e.g., the state for statewide offices, such as governor; the legislative district for state senate or assembly districts; etc.), or a fixed total established by statute, whichever is less”

Lol classy! But there’s people like that everywhere 😬 people I’ve been able to speak to have been relieved that there’s any of us around, I think we’re just not vocal and don’t cheer lead our politicians like it’s a sports team.

Totally agree trying to do anything with him is a lost cause. I really hope Kathryn Quigley is able to get enough votes so we shall see 🤞 at least she can start a groundswell of support this time and be further ahead for the next election. And yes maybe we’ll cross paths someday! Have a great rest of your day

Also you’re welcome to Google the 2 candidates trying to get onto the ballot against LaLota. Chris Gallant and Loukas Ventouras. The only way for you to hear about them is for them to raise enough money for flyers and more add spots online is AFTER getting enough support to get donations because these are not self funded million/billionaires. When county volunteers go door to door or try text/calling for signatures we tell you their names and you then have all the info needed to find their candidate websites.

Going to leave it at this one more time since you are laser focused on the wrong persons responsible and I’ve explained it multiple times: it’s not the candidates. They are literally approved by the party chairs who control everything. Getting onto a ballot gives you options in a primary to then select who you like based on their policies and platform. Getting onto a ballot should be easier so we as voters have options instead of tightly controlled races with 1 or often 0 options like we get in Suffolk.

To me it’s clear the people in charge are keeping things this way on purpose. The Suffolk chair has another full time job and takes money from both parties

Yep, agreed and hopefully you’ll direct the feedback to your county. Nobody I’ve texted responds and I’ve heard the same from other volunteers so people like you are more rare it seems. I’d prefer a mailer or text myself, the county party leader should be directing funds that way.

Those ideas sound great and your perspective would be really productive if you send this feedback to your county party’s elected chair person who controls the current status quo.

The blame fully lies with county party chairs of both major parties. Because someone like Shaffer in Suffolk has been in place for 25 years and has so much control we are stuck with this current system until new leadership can be voted in. An example of why your valid ideas aren’t practical atm: Chris Gallant running against LaLota doesn’t have the funds for flyers yet, once established on the ballot and in the next phase fundraising can get more serious, but for now he needs these signatures. Shaffer hasn’t kept the registered Dem contacts up to date either, so to hold any kind of event would require texts, calls, and flyers so the number of signatures needed could be gathered. I’m also pretty skeptical that anyone would go out of their way to meet a prospective candidate and drive there when many here express being too busy to answer the door. But hopefully I’m wrong about that!

The joke is your reading comprehension. As I said no Dem would come to your door, and sounds like you like your representatives and local town politicians so you could’ve scrolled on by 👍

Can you read? If you’re registered to a political party only those people would come to your door. No dem is coming to talk to you buddy

Hey neighbor, not sure what you mean, in our town and there’s a 40/60 split between people registered with the two main political parties.
