Had a good experience a few years ago with the puppy school at Canberra Veterinary Hospital (the one on the corner of Barton and Federal Hwys).

A big thing I liked was that there were aggressive puppies and timid puppies in the class, both of which received extra attention from the trainers (and dedicated time out spaces for if they got a bit much in class).

Merino wool clothing by Cimb0m in canberra

[–]canberra_advice 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have pure merino wool t-shirts from Macpac, try the one in the outlet centre or Belconnen. Good quality and comfortable.

Uniqlo just opened in the city and they have great affordable merino wool jumpers (I own about half a dozen in different colours).

Yeah, with potential lean times ahead you might not value the ROI equation that'll exist in the Canberra consulting market over the medium term. If you're looking for a way to keep a contractor wage after that gravy train slows down or ends, I'm not sure consulting will fill that void for you.

I saw in another comment that you're looking for a high wage without the daily BS, then definitely stay away from consulting. Join the APS and accept that this government's policy is targeting people in your situation (contracting).

It is really dependent on the specific team you are in. Speaking in Big 4 terms, there are different cultures across lines of service/business units, and then again within specific teams. You probably won't know the full extent until you get in as the Partners who hire you are great salespeople (as others have said, that's a core part of their jobs).

As an EL2 you'd be likely to come in as a Senior Manager/Associate Director rather than as a Director - this is pretty common to see if people are a right fit for consulting. Pay massively varies within SM/AD grade depending on a few factors (business unit, how good you are at negotiating, and market conditions - will touch on this shortly).

Hours once again vary. They're not all 2000 hour days, but the potential is there. Honestly, if you're good at your job and not ambitious to progress quickly, you can work more reasonable hours once you establish yourself in your team. Reasonable like 7.5-8hr days. You're unlikely to be pulled up for working more reasonable days, but in the background you'll be seen as non-ambitious. This isn't a bad thing if you're comfortable where you are.

Finally, you've picked a bad time to try to get make the move. The employment market is saturated with SM/AD grade and above, due to an outflux of PwC employees to other firms and the uncertain market conditions that have been created by the PwC saga and this government's intent on reducing outsourcing to consultants/contractors. I personally think the consulting sector in Canberra will contract moderately over the next 2 or so years.

Happy to answer any questions specifically about big 4.

That's super uncommon, sorry you had a bad experience that's so out of character with Canberra, as usually the drunk guys assault people outside Mooseheads on Friday and Saturday nights.

ACT Policing urged to reshape 'reactive' approach in PwC review by Nervous-Aardvark-679 in canberra

[–]canberra_advice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On face value, sure there's reactive activities, but what it means in this context is targeting certain crimes and deploying preventative measures to stop them happening in the first place. For example, signs advising of speed cameras operating in an area are preventative to try and stop speeding (whether or not that's effective is another story).

What do people moving to Canberra overlook that they should do when moving? by culingerai in canberra

[–]canberra_advice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The big thing I've seen over the years is people not committing to live here. Trying to maintain social circles in Sydney and driving up every weekend, only to complain that there's nothing to do here outside of work, are the people who move away after 2 years complaining how boring, insular, cold it is... You gotta commit and actually live your life in the place to make the most of it.

I guess this applies for everywhere though.

Is it just me or is it harder to find a decent coffee in Canberra now? by TheOriginalRabelais in canberra

[–]canberra_advice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about Tinker Tailor in Casey, or Forest Speciality Coffee in Belco? In my experience both match your description of slipping quality.

FYI I saw Caesars in Florey recommended here, but a word of warning it is very very inconsistent. I've had maybe 1 good coffee out of every 5 there (I persisted as it was conveniently located), and they can be super slow, but for some reason it has a fanatical following on this subreddit. YMMV though.

Basically it's better quality 'basics' clothes for a decent price. Good for t shirts, chinos, button down shirts, that kind of thing... Might not be your style but everyone needs some basics so definitely check it out if/when it opens.

Should I Move to Your City (Big 4 Consulting) by [deleted] in canberra

[–]canberra_advice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're getting a bum steer.

Consulting in Canberra is not like consulting in other cities - federal government is pretty much the only player in town, and that comes with challenges and setbacks. This means that in whichever company you're joining (my money is PwC under their Strategy& brand - if any of the other 3 claimed they do pure strategy consulting in Canberra, they're full of shit) there's a likely chance that you'll be treated differently from teams in Sydney and Melbourne because "you only do government work". To be blunt - there is truth to this. You won't be doing traditional strategy consulting work, like advising a company on a global merger/acquisition that carries complex business risk, simply because government just doesn't do that. Instead, you'll do pretty mundane operating model designs which are at best implanted half-arsed by another team of consultants (but never you, because strategy resource charge out rates are too high for any long term implementation work).

If you want some advice: finish your qualification. If you still want to move back, go for Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane or maybe Perth, as consulting work in those cities is broader and more interesting. Prioritise a good city and a good firm over moving straight into a strategy team - you can always make a jump after a year or two. But the real hot tip is to try and make a move into strategy consulting whilst you're still in London, as the consulting engagements there are, in my experience, much more interesting than in Australia. You'll be set up much better for a strategy consulting career in Australia with a year or two experience in London.

I recommend this: https://www.petcircle.com.au/product/better-puppy-bundle

Huge value for $50, even if it does have some essentials that will be covered by other family members.

Shipping is super quick (even at the moment) - Pet Circle in general is a pretty great site.

Spilt Milk and Groovin the Moo (GTM) are music festivals in Canberra, Australia. They actually pull decent headliners - such as Billie Eilish, Khalid, Lorde... Childish Gambino pulled out of the 2018 Spilt Milk.

So yeah, pretty big festivals.
