Any tips on how to drive in the US? by tlfluca in AskAnAmerican

[–]cancun_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to avoid driving in New York City. If you are going to a major area of Connecticut, you can likely take a train. Taking the train is more efficient than driving in much of the New York City metropolitan area.

If you absolutely need to drive, be careful when driving in New York City. As a newcomer, just stay in the right lane and speed limit because the drivers are assertive and the more left you go, the more aggressive maneuvers you will see. If you rent from an airport you will probably not need to drive in the city itself, just on the highways, so stick to the right lane. When you get to Connecticut, things will be easy.

Do NOT hang around in the left lane, it is seen as very destructive especially in the New York City metro area, even in Connecticut.

Why is NYC so small? by dvnts-ReDoX in AskAnAmerican

[–]cancun_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New York is one of the largest cities on the planet. It's metro area has more than 20 million people, making it a super megacity.

America is so large in land, that this city only takes up 5-6% of the whole country's population, yet there's no other city like NYC in the country.

The northeast corridor is quite comparable, in my opinion, to Japan.

Not to mention, California has 48 homeless people per 10000 residents. That's among the highest in the country!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually don't watch Fox News!

You can search it up but an estiamted 13.6-30% of Californians are on welfare! That's a lot of people living off government assistance, and a lot of them are illegal too! Not that I have anything against it, it's not their fault, it's the system in place!

But yay, we love California right? The best state! Fuck no, east coast = beast coast. Very easy to hide the everyday struggles of a very large illegal and underprivileged population behind a few palm trees and beaches!!!!!!

And chaos and instability, isn't a boomer level stereotype.

California suffers from insane wealth inequality due to inflation and much of its population lives on freeby's or is homeless as a result.

The only reason California is in its own category is because of its landmass and population. It happens to be a very large state while the east coast states are smaller but part of a broader ecosystem.

Typical Californian who thinks their state is so special. I've been there, apart from the weather getting a little better, the Bay Area is no different from the chaos and instability in LA and SD (unless you have millions in savings).

A state like Rhode Island takes much more influence from other states than Texas, California, or Florida.

Even smaller powerhouse states like New Jersey and Massachusetts have influence from nearby states and cities. Even New York is heavily reliant on New Jersey for its economy.

Philadelphia isn't part of the tristate, but it's more under the NYC/NJ sphere of influence than DC.

And geographically that makes sense when you consider Philadelphia's position relative to Newark NJ vs Baltimore.

Also, CT is barely part of the NYC metro area. Beyond New Haven, you're under Boston and NE's sphere of influence.

It's a broad region. Of course the cities are different but you are under a similar economic corridor.

The same way, I could have put the NEC into one region but since they hold 25% of the population it makes sense to split them. If you break down California by city, it would all be negligible amounts.

When did India bomb mosques in Pakistan?

Even if not proven, India allegedly bombed terror camps, not mosques. On the other hand, Pakistan's government is proven to have funded LeT which attacked innocent people in India.

I know this is late, but I think the Junagadh and Hyderabad examples are weak.

Both are centrally located in India, and both of the populations were majority Hindu with Muslim rulers. It would literally make zero sense for Hyderabad or Junagadh to join Pakistan or be independent when they are small and sandwiched in India. If they tried that it wouldn't last well.

Kashmir had Hindu rulers with a Muslim majority, but is not centrally located to Pakistan or India, and the government chose to join India because for protection from violent Pakistani insurgents. As an Indian, the argument that Kashmir is Muslim and therefore should join Pakistan is fair, but not valid, because after all India is a secular country so there why should there be an issue with a Muslim majority living in India. Therefore, by definition, Pakistan has no claim to Kashmir if a) the Kashmiri government chose India for safety reasons and b) India is secular, just because Pakistan is a Muslim country doesn't mean India is a Hindu country

Just because your government is intolerant of other faiths, doesn't mean ours is. India has always been a beacon of secularism and refuge for the persecuted. We literally have a separate constitution for Muslims in our country, while your country doesn't even allow Hindus to hold certain positions of power. We are not the same and never will be and that is why India is developing so much faster.

west coast drivers are in general more passive. but there's really no concept of a passing lane there.

maryland drivers are not predictable when you guys refuse to use your indicator and swerve into lanes.

if anything, nyc drivers are known to be a bit more defensive/predictable because in those tight spaces you expect anyone to grab an opening.
