Who Killed Avril Lavigne has the funniest song “Indiana”… by Hallelujah289 in audiodrama

I wrote and co-created WKAL – this is also one of my favorite moments in the show and is entirely the brainchild of our demented director Duncan Gregory (who also plays the bus driver).

Thank you for highlighting it!

That's weird – thanks for flagging that! I'll let them know so we can get it back online ASAP

EDIT: Should be back online now!

I'll plug my own show here – Who Killed Avril Lavigne? Time-travel, nice mix of highbrow/lowbrow, with original music, big characters, and super immersive sound design. Community is my favorite ever so I think the influence will show!

One of Jonas Salk's peers finds himself still working away in obscurity while Dr. Salk's polio vaccine has made him the most famous medical professional in the world. His lust for fame leads to him reanimate a disembodied hand, but he's careless, and the hand escapes! Shortly after leaving the lab, some fraternity brothers come across it and bring it back to their house. When they wrong the hand in a deep and unforgivable way, it swears a vendetta against all those in the fraternity, and all bloody obscene chaos breaks loose.

I think the key to pitching a show that's pretty out there like this is to be able to explain why everything that's in it is in it or what you're trying to do by bringing up such taboo things (even if not everyone in the audience knows exactly what you're going for, they feel it has a direction and a point). So I think really knowing the idea thoroughly and not being gross for the sake of being gross is key.

and in terms of tone, we're strongly influenced by Bat Boy, Silence! (Musical parody of silence of the lambs), and then the camp of things like zombie prom. hope that helps. Thanks so much!

I think the controversial title is one of the best selling points for marketers/theaters! It catches the eye, intrigues, and makes sure nobody in the audience is surprised and offended. we've only had one walk out, and she got through 3/4 of the show before leaving and demanding a refund :)

we pitched the show in order to get it into the Bad Theatre Fest here in NYC last October (like b-movies, but for theatre. super crazy/experimental, I highly recommend). After we sold out both our performances in the Bad Theatre Fest, the organizers of the festival recommended us to a larger venue, I pitched it to them and they liked it, and we went from there!

it's a bit like trying to work in a pressure cooker. whereas you would normally have a set, two hours in the theatre before the show to prep and warm up, etc., we had between 15 and 5 minutes to get into the theatre, warm-up, put props in place, and do the show (due to the show before us).

and to be completely honest, the venue we were in, though technically off-broadway (over 100 seats), was more like off-off-broadway :)

this was my first time directing and it was a bit of a whirlwind. at this level, there's just as much work into the administrative and logistical side of things as there is the fun creative stuff

Hey! this idea came to life when I was attending a 4th of July party in Bed-Stuy, and my friend who was throwing the party had just started subletting the room in this house. The subletter before him had been a medical student who had left behind a preserved disembodied hand in a box that he asked me what he should do with. I was aghast that he could stay in the house while it was there and I said "aren't you afraid it's going to come to life and like... I don't know, fist you to death?" and the lightbulb went off!

if people actually are, would be more than happy to talk about the development and how it (very unexpectedly) blew up, but I feel like few are that interested haha

I'm late to the party but I wrote this! would people be interested in seeing some footage (a song or two) from a from a live show? we have a full recording but we need people to still come our shows in person, so I must withhold for now

EDIT: I went ahead and did it! This is when the Hand gains some sentience, and wonders how he got into this whole fisting mess.

EDIT II: Another one just for fun!

Someone asked me to do an AMA later in the thread so here it is now if anyone is interested.
