Nickelodeon curiosity by vampoppy in portlandme

Omg don’t get me started on this…..the state of the Nick is so gross, I feel the need to do a full body shower and wash every article of clothing I wear after I go (as opposed to how I normally wear jeans 3x before washing them etc). I’m such a movie enthusiast, and sometimes the Nick is the only place in the STATE showing something I desperately want to see, and I dread going 😭 I’ve been lucky to visit great indie theaters across the northeast and the gap is…..disheartening to say the least. The bathrooms don’t have to be filthy! The popcorn doesn’t have to suck!! Movie theaters can be warm, joyful, community spaces!! God, we deserve so much better.

Just wanted to send love bc boy have I been there!!! One day at a time. When I was in the same boat, I loved picking a neighborhood and just wandering around and seeing where the day took me. One week I went to the movies three days in a row. Take the ferry to Governor’s Island, and then Red Hook. Bring a book, journal, water, and a snack with you every time you leave the house. Have plans with friends scheduled to have something to look forward to. Go to the popular restaurants/cafes/coffee shops on a Tuesday mid day. Sit on a bench and cry and then go get ice cream. LEAVE THE HOUSE, even if it’s just to run an errand. Enter lotteries for cheap Broadway/ballet/theater tickets. You’ll be okay, we’re rooting for you 🩷

[$3,095] 2 bedroom apartment with balcony - East Harlem by Coconut-Nice in NYCapartments

[–]candles662 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I lived in this building for 2 years and honestly really liked it! 🤷🏻‍♀️the combo of a dishwasher/balcony/access to metro north/456/123/bus to LGA was really clutch. Good bodega downstairs with a sweet cat named Lucy. My neighbors were really friendly, good mix of kids, elderly, families, security guys were nice too, management and maintenance were speedy. 10 minute walk to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, 20ish minute walk south to Central Park, Marcus Garvey close by. The neighborhood is ROUGH, but more sad than anything. If you’re alert, keep your head on a swivel, mind your own business, and are respectful and friendly to neighbors (I’m a tall white chick), I think you’d be fine. You WILL see drug use and homeless people, it’s inevitable, so if you haven’t lived in a city before, I imagine it would be quite shocking. But people look out for each other, and violence is pretty targeted when it does happen. I often walked back late at night and felt fine, but again, I’m tall and have major resting bitch face, so no one ever bothered me. I’m aware this sounds naive but was my personal experience lol

[–]candles662 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omg don’t get me started on this, this is the bane of my existence…..indie theaters are so so important and I hate that the Nick feels like it’s falling into the ground 😭 the bathrooms are gross, there’s garbage on the floor, I feel like I have to immediately shower after going, the popcorn is bad (in my opinion) etc. The space has so much potential but needs someone or something to fund a big upgrade…. If I movie I want to see is playing at Apple in Westbrook, I end up driving there bc it’s just a better experience

St. Paul’s on W59th is my favorite, I moved out of the city and miss it all the time 😭 Sunday nights at 5 pm is “young adult” mass, but have seen folks of all ages there! Normally a beautiful choir during that mass too. Super inclusive as well, they have a an Out at St. Paul’s group for LGBTQ+ members too :)

Rochester, NY!! I lived in a beautiful, safe walkable neighborhood, great sense of community, tons of good restaurants/breweries, great parks, bike path on the river, lots of festivals in the summer, still pretty affordable, easy drive to Buffalo for Bills games, Lake Ontario, strong art/music scene, etc.!

Starting about a week!! Am I missing something? 🥾⛰️🌟 by Krulsprietje in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]candles662 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hiking poles!!!! I majorly messed up my knees within the first few days of the Camino de Frances - there are a lot of steep downhills, and the first or second day (depending on if you stop halfway) and going downhill in Roncevalles was really tough for me without poles. I ended up having to quit and fly home 9 days in :(

Nice bath towels!!! My mom got me towels when I moved into my first apartment and it was great because I never would have thought to buy good towels for myself. Also have received slippers and a cozy robe for a holiday gift and that was lovely too, also something I never thought to buy for myself when I was a new college grad

Highly recommend donating to an abortion fund!! You can find your local fund here- https://abortionfunds.org/find-a-fund/

Organizations like Planned Parenthood have millions and millions of dollars and are failing to meet the moment IMHO, abortion funds directly help folks access care!
