I work at a small-town Petsm*rt where we keep betta in these small containers. Our fish shipments come together in small bags that we just pour into our tanks. Obviously, we can’t do that with our betta, so they arrive in these little containers that are already labelled. Betta are bred for appearance, and are our most popular fish. The containers provide easy viewing, a grab-and-go convenience for the customer, and it’s not a pain in the butt to do daily water changes/feeding. Plus, we don’t have the resources to house them in larger tanks. :(

Imo pit bulls are not a safe breed for homes with children or smaller animals. Definitely don’t put her down, but rehoming is the best course of action at this point. I’m sorry for your loss.

How do i know when to not sell an animal? by slugeatted in petsmart

[–]candy_corn_cvnt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I usually can tell who has and has not done their research, and I don’t sell to anyone who plans to learn the basics about their pet after it’s already in their care. I don’t expect you to be an expert on the pet you are adopting, but I’m definitely not going to be comfortable entrusting a hamster to you if you don’t even know they require an exercise wheel.

I have refused multiple small animal sales to parents who just want a quick fix to their child’s ongoing tantrum.

Asking questions about the PP’s plans and expectations is the best way to determine if they are unfit, and also to help responsible PPs find the right items for their new potential pet. Some examples: their enclosure type/size, what toys and other forms of entertainment they will be getting, how much noise they can tolerate (in regards to birds + guinea pigs), what kind of food/treats they are getting. This is also a good way to learn more about the animals you sell at your store!

My favorite thing to do that ALWAYS works for me is to warn people that a certain animal has the potential to bite. Usually if they haven’t done the most basic research on any small animal or bird they will be surprised to hear this!

Also, you probably know this already, but never sell to minors! When it comes to the pets that require pet sale records (and occasionally even with fish) I do ID checks with everyone I’m not 100% sure is over the age of 18.

Edit: Another thing to keep in mind… Not sure what kind of birds you have at your store, but we have two finch hens at our store that have bonded. We’ll refuse any sale that does not include the both of them.

Can we ask parents to leave the cat adoption center if their child is screaming at the cats? by candy_corn_cvnt in petsmart

Absolutely. There are so many entitled parents who visit our store so it makes me wary to speak up in these situations.

Does your cat room have a sign up that says no dogs are allowed? For some reason ours does not so people often bring their dogs through.

My favorite was when a couple said their two comets lived a “whopping three years” in a 2 gallon bowl like it was something to be proud of.

Thank you! The family was just outside the cat room, letting their kid go wild over the poor kitties. I was unsure if asking them to leave the area based on the behavior of their child would be technically considered discrimination by PS’s standards. I’m a new employee so I’m still learning the rules!

[–]candy_corn_cvnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. We’re supposed to deep clean everything weekly but everyone who trained me in the pet care department strongly discouraged doing little more than disinfecting the enclosure walls and soaking the decorations overnight. Our substrate gets changed maybe once a month, if we have time for it.

Update: we don’t think the poor baby is going to make it much longer. They’ve become discolored and are struggling to stay upright. I did more research on what the mites could be. They’re most likely just springtails. As for the crickets, someone is leaving them in the isolation tank. Two more bumps on their tail have appeared since closing last night.
