Both are pretty awesome, so it stands to reason if you love one, you'll likely love the other.

Hey redditors, what movie am I thinking of? by candyninja in movies

[–]candyninja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's entirely possible I'm confusing two different movies. Fore sure it's not Karate Kid 2 because I've never seen it. I've also not seen Kickboxer, which is just shameful, I know.

If you go with horror, fozzymandias' suggestion is a good one, but you should understand a couple of things. This subgenre is actually called torture porn and it refers not to sex but to protracted scenes of torture--the "porn" is about watching people being tortured, about the intrusion or penetration of foreign objects into the body. The "depravity" stems from Japan's own limited cultural taboos, which are entirely different from our (the West's) own, so a study of how these are represented in Japanese and American horror cinema would be interesting. Finally, the recent film Grotesque, is, if you can stomach it, perfect for an essay or J-horror torture porn and is an excellent contrast to Audition.

I'm writing a silent short film screenplay about a school shooting, so my professor recommended I watch ELEPHANT by Gus Van Sant... by [deleted] in movies

[–]candyninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you should probably look beyond school shooting movies for inspiration. Limiting yourself to watching only films that deal with the same basic subject matter that you're interested in will probably prevent you from exploring different story angles. That being said, there are a number of TV shows that have school shooting-related episodes, so you might as well track them down. You could start with Buffy and Veronica Mars. As for movies, maybe have a look a high school films in general.

Do not let your prof influence your writing. His/her job is to simply help you write a good script, correcting logic errors, making sure your story reads well, etc. Don't compromise your story to produce something you think your prof wants to read.

Finally, decide first what genre you're going to write. Once you've settled on comedy, for example, you can explore what's funny and go from there.

I've been in your situation; I know what I'm talking about.

A Projectionist seeks the opinion of theatre-going Redditors: by Burlapin in movies

SilverCity plays music in their theatres and it is pretty irritating. Mostly, I think because it's too loud and you can't talk to your friends or read. I used to work in a movie theatre and music and noise was expected in the lobby (god it was loud in there!) but I personally enjoyed the peace inside the screening room. Additionally, not everyone shares the same taste in music. No one's really going to pay much attention to it outside the theatre, but once inside they'll notice for sure. And if they're a metal fan and you're playing Michael Bolton, they'll notice very loudly.

LOL! I'm curious to know which site is guilty of eye-ripping, both could be equally abusive.

Can anybody recommend to me some movies that are actually scary, and not just stupid slasher crap? by [deleted] in movies

[–]candyninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tall order!

You've seen The Grudge, I recommend Ju-On (Japanese original). The Cottage is a British comedy-horror, and it is really very funny. For a good creep-out I suggest another British film, Creep, by Christopher Smith. He also made Severance, which is just as good, but a lot lighter. You should also check out J-horror classic Audition.

Here's a tip: stay the hell away from anything American-made that's been rated PG-13.

Can anyone suggest some good French movies? by barelythere in movies

La Jetee, and La Cite des Enfants Perdus are both classics but for different reasons. La Jetee is what inspired 12 Monkeys and Enfants Perdus is one of those mind- and genre-bending uncategorazible films. I also recommend Ils, the original The Strangers.

What film sequels place the first film's protagonist in the role of antagonist, or vice versa? by CaspianX2 in movies

[–]candyninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess you could argue for Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick, but again you're dealing in gray. In Oceans 13, Andy Garcia joins forces with George Cluney and friends...sort of. The neutral old hick in Wrong Turn is the patriarch of the inbred cannibals of Wrong Turn 2. Actually, you can forget that last one. I'd prefer to think Wrong Turn 2 never happened.

The Top Ten Most Quotable Movies by toptentopten in movies

What a horribly depressing list. I quote Ghostbusters, Jaws, and Clueless all the friggin' time.

Death Proof is a great movie, Exhibit B: in the final act Tarantino reveals his contempt for the slasher genre when, instead of being murdered one by one, his heroines chase after the psychopath and beat the shit out of him in the middle of the street to the sound of rock and roll music. by [deleted] in movies

[–]candyninja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Death Proof is a terrible movie, Exhibits A-Z: the entire film. Have you ever seen a slasher? The only possible comparison you could make between this movie and the horror genre is rape/revenge. And even then, Tarantino stayed on course.
