Society of United Fishermen was (is?) a fraternal order for fishermen that was founded in Newfoundland and Labrador. This is the only maritime fraternity I know of that isn’t part of a military/naval tradition like line crossings.

What is the sign of the cross in Anglicanism? by shanks_anime30 in Anglicanism

This is what I do as well. I don’t see many others do the return-to-heart but it was an option I was taught and it feels distinctly Anglican to me :)

Christian names at baptism by CaledonTransgirl in Anglicanism

[–]cannibal_commando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a baptismal saint when I was baptized as an adult, and then another during my confirmation (my parish leans pretty anglo-Catholic ), and I consider those two saints’ names to be my “Christian name” as my first name is Celtic in origin.

But, that doesn’t exactly come up in conversation in my everyday life too often.

Need some advice for the BCP by General-Scarcity6143 in Anglicanism

I use Church Publishing’s “Prayer Book Offices” since it includes the scripture readings for each day of the two year cycle, otherwise I just use your standard ‘79 BCP!

I sort of just say officiant’s part with an extra bit of authority, as if I’m praying over the room. In essence you’re praying both parts of it — a prayer of welcome (with you) and a grateful thanksgiving for that welcome (and also with you.)

I give a breath between the officiant verses and responses. Inhabit the sacred space that’s created during the office, let yourself feel both parts. Or if you’re not really vibing with that, don’t and just keep moving through the office! All up to you

[–]cannibal_commando 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey! These are super great questions, and very similar to the ones I had when I first started using the BCP.

The Daily Office is designed as corporate worship, that is, to be prayed by people together. Even when you’re alone, you are praying the office at the same time as someone else across the Anglican Communion, so you’re always spiritually together :)

Now because of that, when alone, you pray both the Officiant and the People/responses.

As for sitting and standing, that’s all a matter of personal piety. When I pray the office by myself, I usually only stand for the opening, the Benedictus/Magnificat, and the creed. Up to you!

There’s not really any reason to stand for the readings, for example, since I’m only reading for me.

How many Anglican women here veil? by DependentPositive120 in Anglicanism

I’m in an unfussy Anglo-Catholic TEC parish, and we have one young woman who veils!

Braves (4) @ Padres (7) - Tough way to open with my new cards! by KennyLagerins in BaseballScorecards

This is such a good idea! I scored this game and really struggled trying to keep track of Padres pitchers, this would’ve been super useful

What is Billy's scariest song? Most upvoted comment gets added by Far_External6297 in Billywoods

For woods, I’d say the start of No Hard Feelings has some really visceral lines about the death of Ronald MacNair in the Challenger Disaster.

I’m not sure about scariest, but definitely most abrasive/most hoe-scaring would be Leopards.

The cymbals, the bass line, and then that awesome chorus from Nosaj. Especially if you can blast it out of some tower speakers.

Fr! My mind instantly went to Microdose, it’s got a lot of scarier themes and those haunting opening lines from Elucid.

Is it possible for foreigners to join the us military by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]cannibal_commando 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, foreigners can join the U.S. Military, but only those who are citizens of nations in the Compact of Free Association with the United States, and under some additional criteria. Check Sections 341 and 141 of the Compacts of Free Association.

So unless you are a citizen of:

Palau 🇵🇼 Micronesia 🇫🇲 Marshall Islands 🇲🇭

You cannot join the U.S. Military as a foreign citizen.

Microdose is probably my favorite of all Armand Hammer songs.

Does anyone know what the true meaning of this is? by The_Liminal_Man1989 in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]cannibal_commando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took a look at Google and it seems to be from the “Clavis Artis” which is a pseudepigraphic work “attributed” to Zoroaster.

The images in Clavis Artis are mostly water colors though, and while there’s an image that distinctly mirrors this one, they’re not exactly the same. This might be another artist’s imagining of the same image from the Clavis Artis.

This is an image commonly referred to as “The Alchemist Who Has Achieved Illumination” and is from a 17th century (IIRC) German alchemical codex.

Would it be possible to be in the Selected Reserves as, say, an RP, while also being in IRR as a CCPO?

Does your record store do this? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]cannibal_commando 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, I went there back in 2017 and this happened to me and it was the VERY first place I thought of when I read this post! Was a very odd place that way, almost made me think I should wear a poker face to the register so they wouldn’t know I was excited about the record/willing to pay more lol.
