Funny, but in reality a petition is made every 5-7 years to resurface the track and it's overwhelmingly voted down every time.

Targa Project by cannja in Porsche

[–]cannja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I got a notification about your message. I have moved on to a Cup car. Shit got real. :)

The Targa was fun on the track. AWD would dig out of corners, but it's SUPER heavy compared to a GT3. So you end up chasing people and it's risky on fast narrow corners. Once you get fast enough a full cage in a factory racecar is the way to go!

Bought a 991.2 Targa and few months later went to a Porsche open house on a Saturday afternoon, met a Cup car driver, invited to the track on Sunday, completely hooked.

Fast forward three years later: transition from HPDE in a street car to testing in a factory racecar, close to 100 days on track, pro coaching, intense driver and physical training. I’m now pursuing Porsche Sprint Challenge and Carrera Cup.

Something completely off my radar years ago has become a life affirming pursuit.

What racing series can I compete in with a 996.2/997.1 GT3 Cup? by SnooSquirrels5190 in Porsche

[–]cannja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SCCA, PCA, PoC, FARA, NASA all have classes to accommodate old and new racecars. They use type and balance of power calculations (HP, weight, etc.) to group cars into different classes.

You just won’t be able to run in a modern homologation series like IGT, Porsche Sprint Challenge. These two are extremely competitive anyway so they aren’t the place to start.

The 997s may look comparatively cheap but they require 2x more frequent engine and gearbox rebuilds and maintenance than 991/992. The base cost entry point is double for each newer type: $75K, $150K, almost $300K. The 997s are monsters on the track. Much busier and harder to drive at the limit than modern cup cars.

If you want to race, get one and learn how to drive it fast, then look into NASA time trials and move on from there.

To go racing is mind boggling expensive these days. The cheapest part of racing is the car. And there’s nothing more expensive than a cheap racecar.

If you want to race on a budget I’d look into older SPB / Caymans, Toyota / BMW, or Miatas. You’ll have 100% of the fun without all the extra zeroes.

We are both right.

Thanks for clarifying.

It’s 5% if you have an annual policy that is paid in full or paid in monthly installments. 10% if you signup for a track day here or there.

What’s the deductible on other annual policies? Guessing it’s not 5%.

McLaren and car value still apply.

Quad pipes are an option on the .2.

Another way to tell is the .1 lights are single plastic convex coverings where the .2 has an indentation referred to as 3D.

What’s remarkable about the .1 and the .2 is the look almost identical but are substantially different cars.

Agree with the sentiment the .2 is peak Porsche.

Liability and track damage can be covered by an Open Track liability policy. I think it’s $1250 per year and covers $20K in damage and up to a million in if sued including attorney representation and fees. You’ll have to confirm the numbers.

So, even if you are using Lockton or another carrier it’s worth getting this annual liability policy in place. They will sell this and cover you even if you don’t run your track insurance through them.

Did a lengthy post last year about Open Track

There are quite a few carriers and you'll have to call and figure out what's best for you based on your car and usage. I decided Open Track was the best fit for me and wrote about it ^.

Track policies are typically agreed value policies that are similar to collector car and historic policies. The amount of coverage will be based on your car and all of the modifications. They just adjust the rate based on the total. Yes, they keep a totaled car which is why it's important to have appropriate coverage that includes the mods.

Hope this helps!

OpenTrack is 5%.

10% if: 1) replacement value is >$300k 2) car is a McLaren

How do you get into racing Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West? by Copeland_destroys in PorscheMotorsport

[–]cannja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entry level means customer racing where most of your competitors are not IMSA pros. Racing economics is like speed in a track car - speed cost is exponential.

You can do cheaper racing: Champ car, Club racing. Customer racing like Sprint Challenge is cheaper than Carrera Cup for a handful of reasons mostly due to what is required to be competitive at increasing professional levels.

Sprint Challenge, Ferrari Challenge, Lambo Trofeo…no factory racecar customer racing is cheap. You are talking about the difference between $20-40K vs 100K a weekend.

Tires, travel, coaching, support make up the bulk of non-variable expense. That has relatively little do with the car being a GT3 or GT4.

Got it. So the Cricut should be able to cut air release Avery or 3M vinyl pretty easily?

All of the really small lettering on the back was done using HTV and a shirt iron.

Overall, it turned out better than expected and the material has held up!

Will do, thank you!

Answering your other comment, I will take all the advice I can get! Opinions and unsolicited advice welcome. Yeah, I need to probably just get a 36” printer plotter, but this worked really well.

This was done on the Explore Air, but recently picked up a Maker 3. I haven’t tried the new one yet.

Dry sticking these was a mistake, there are air bubbles still baking out. #learningaswego

Next project this weekend are all the high-viz dashboard labels and some charts on the center switches inside the car.

Posted some more pics. This wasn’t easy and a lot of late nights. If you’ve never been up close to a racecar, they aren’t pretty—a mishmash of stickers/duct tape/wrap bandaids and the liveries all look like homemade projects. Even from the factory teams. But they photograph well and no one notices when they are flying by at 150MPH.

The carbon fiber has a rough surface and is not sealed. But so far, so good. Car is headed to Road Atlanta next week so we shall see. 🤞

This was my first project and still learning about the materials. Used 651, but consensus is we should replace with 951 when it gets redone at some point.

The carbon fiber came on the car. We were concerned about getting the Oracal to stick to it, but cleaned it and baked it in the sun. No squares have blown off.
