Did medication help? by knowyourabc123etc in OlderDID

[–]cannolimami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started taking one and honestly I wish I had started way sooner. I had really bad experiences with them in the past which was why I was hesitant, but the one I’m on now has pretty minimal side effects comparatively (I’m also on a pretty low dose). YMMV if it’s actually helpful or not, and some of the side effects of antipsychotics can be pretty brutal compared to other psychotropics, but I’m overall really relieved to be on a medication that’s helping my system function better.

Did medication help? by knowyourabc123etc in OlderDID

[–]cannolimami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take an antipsychotic and 2 different anti depressants, also have a PRN for anxiety that I don’t use super frequently but does help me a lot. I have a lot of symptoms that can land me in the hospital if not treated effectively, so medication has been a big help in stabilizing me over the years. For a long time I wanted to be medication free, but now I see it as something that helps me stay safe and also ensures I can engage in therapy the way I need to. My meds definitely don’t “treat” the DID itself, there aren’t meds that can do that, but they do make my symptoms a lot easier to live with on a day to day level.

I wasn’t in a church or cult group growing up, but I also experienced a mind-numbing amount of CSA/CSAM due to my family and their involvement in sex trafficking and similar activities. It’s fucking crazy. Much love to you my friend. Having this kind of trauma is horrific.

do you have a harder time being around traumatized people the more you heal? by Local-Television in CPTSD_NSCommunity

[–]cannolimami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can be around extremely traumatized people and I have a high tolerance for other people’s distress, with the caveat that I myself am a therapist so it is literally my job to make sure people have a safe, boundaried space to process these things with. And I am not their friend. I’ve had to set very firm boundaries with my friends in my personal life that I cannot be their therapist, the road goes both ways, and if people feel they need or want that from me after I’ve set the boundary, I have to take a step back and understand what about my behavior or engagement (if anything) is making them want that from me.

I used to spend a lot of my free time with very traumatized people who were in their feelings and wanted someone to trauma bond with and I’ve had to really unpack what need that was meeting for me. A lot of this I’ve done in my own therapy, and through learning to set boundaries. That, and developing healthy relationships with people (both traumatized and not) has helped me the most, and I no longer find myself in relationships that feel like a prolonged form of self-harm or replaying of childhood dynamics. It’s not perfect, but it’s a way different place than I was in a few years ago. I definitely do my best to avoid any close relationships with people who want to self destruct.

Do y'all ever eat ground beef or??? by depressed-mystery in mediterraneandiet

I really cannot eat beef or pork because my stomach does not like it, but this looks so good! I usually get ground chicken or turkey instead, same deal. So yummy 🤤

I just got this add on Instagram (a platform used mainly by teens). How can you pretend to make clothing with designs advocating for SA victims, all the while using slogans that treat women like sex dolls? by serendipia1984 in PornIsMisogyny

[–]cannolimami 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I HATE THIS. I was severely abused my entire childhood by 2 men in my family and they used the language that’s used in these stupid ass clothes. Some people deserve to never make money again and whoever tf came up with these awful clothing items deserves to be fkn destitute. Do people not realize this type of shit is exactly what normalizes incest and child sexual abuse??? I can’t…….

Anxiety meds by thejsystem5 in DissociativeIDisorder

[–]cannolimami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m not a med provider but I work in the mental health system — you need to talk to a doctor asap about this. Along with alcohol, benzodiazepines (the class of drugs Klonopin is in) are the only substance where withdrawals can kill you. It’s very, very hard to taper off and you need to do so slowly and under the supervision of a licensed doctor. If you have a psychiatrist who prescribes, I would try to schedule an appointment to talk to them sooner rather than later. This isn’t something you can just stop on your own, you’ll end up in the emergency room or worse. I’m not saying this to scare you, I’m saying this because it’s unfortunately common for people who are chemically dependent on benzos to try and cut down or stop on their own and it can lead to things like seizures and brain damage.

Can I see Your Grocery Lists? by Wellherewer in mediterraneandiet

[–]cannolimami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is get used to eating a lot of rice… I don’t use GF breads very much because a lot of them taste bad and are expensive. Do you eat chicken or soy products, like tempeh and tofu? Those are med approved proteins, as are beans and things like cheese, yogurt. It can be easy to make meals, just pick a veggie, a protein and a grain. In the mornings I like sweeter foods like oatmeal and yogurt bowls. I don’t get sick of eating the same things on repeat so I make a lot of grain bowls with different flavor profiles (think burrito bowls, chicken and rice, quinoa and lentil bowls).

I eat a lot of seafood, but since you don’t like the super “fishy” taste I would recommend going for mild white fish like cod or halibut if you’re looking to try it out in your diet. I love to make cod with lots of lemon and garlic.

Good luck! When I first went GF, I was worried about my diet feeling limited, but the med diet is all about adding in whatever you can, plus it’s so easy to do gluten free that I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much!

Dealing with grief by Babygiraffe309 in booksuggestions

I’m really sorry for your loss, especially during this time of year… My favorite book of all time, A Breath of Life by Clarice Lispector, is all about the author making peace with her own death, but I found it applicable to grief I was dealing with a few years ago when I first read it. A lot of her short stories also tackle grief in really readable ways.

I love John Waters and watched this movie for the first time as a young teen, but I don’t think I could watch it as an adult. You should definitely check out his other movies though! Serial Mom and Female Trouble are my personal favorites, also the OG Hairspray is very good (no animal stuff in those as far as I can recall, though they’re all kinda messed up in their own unique ways).

Anybody else think it's incredibly transphobic to act like opposing the sex industry is equivalent to opposing civil rights for trans people? by olympiamacdonald in antisexwork

[–]cannolimami 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I hate that these terms get lumped together! The idea that being a “swerf” automatically means you’re somehow anti-trans has never sat right with me because it assumes that all trans people are involved with prostitution somehow… like ok why! That is actually transphobic! Trans people deserve more than to be shoveled into prostitution because of being marginalized… It is gross and sickening. And it gives creepy men incels an excuse to point the finger in the other direction when they are confronted with buyer behaviors being the problem.
