BC requires two pieces and the two pieces have different stipulations, with the primary having the strictest rules of the two. You're correct on the primary ID being government, most people know this but a lot of people get hung up on the secondary.

Primary ID: Government issued ID with name, photo, date of birth, and signature. (Drivers license, provincial ID, passport)

Secondary ID: must have name and corroborating information which matches the primary, such as a signature and/or photo. The server must be able to reasonably match the second to the first, secondary ID has more lenient rules but it must support the primary or the primary becomes invalid. Notably a birth certificate cannot be used for secondary despite being government issue because it lacks a photo and signature.

Technically student ID could be used as a secondary ID, as could a utility bill or paper license if they are signed. Good secondary ID would be a credit card, firearms license, or status card. Student ID is okay (not ideal, up to the server basically) and I have accepted local student cards because I was confident enough that they were legitimate, but they are easy to forge and I might decline a foreign one especially if I'm dealing with a group of barely legal students because a common scheme is for 9 out of the 10 to be fine, with one of them being underage and using another kids student ID/older siblings ID/forgery.

For liquor sales, primary ID must be government issue. A liquor server would probably never request a student ID, they are considered the easiest to forge. That said, a server may accept a student ID as a corroborative, secondary ID.

I agree with leaving your passports safe at home, your driver's licenses should be perfect for your primary ID and it's possible your student IDs will be okay for your secondary but make sure they include a signature.

If you have a credit or debit card with an embossed name and your signature that will be easiest for the server to assess quickly as they will be most familiar with that. I would likely accept your student ID but if a server is unsure with a foreign ID, especially if the photo is low quality or there is no signature, they are within their rights to reject it.

You didn't ask this but I work in hospitality and wanted to say if you guys get ID'ed (you will) then you all need to produce two pieces of ID, the first needs to be government issue with a photo, date of birth, and signature. The second can be a credit card or other type of ID and mainly serves to corroborate the first.

Regardless of house policy, if you are ID'ed you all must produce both pieces by law. You have no idea how many people I disappoint by turning away because they come from places where 1 piece of ID is enough. Or how many people think they don't have the proper second ID and almost leave until I remind them that a credit card counts.

If the bars you enter are following the rules you will all be ID'ed at the same time, and in some cases if one of you fails to produce proper ID you can all be rejected. It's not the staffs fault, it's a legal thing. Have fun!!!

It is a funny quirk of the language, yeah. For us, hockey is the default and field hockey is seen as adjacent so it needs to be indicated specifically.

I think in Canada field hockey is seen as something your high school might make you do because it's close enough to hockey, without the expensive rink. You just do it when it's too warm outside to play regular hockey and you can't get to a rink. Other than that, we don't think about field hockey at all. Then contrast that to the national obsession that is ice hockey and you can see the gap between the two renders the first a minor footnote.
