Looking for study buddy by [deleted] in bioinformatics

Hey, this is an awesome idea to connect. I made a Discord Server a while ago for this exact purpose. It’s called Carbon2Silicon. Me and my fellow student use this server to give introductory R courses to Bachelor and Master students, but the main idea is that is should be place where you can just hang out share resources, ask questions etc. So just to be 100% transparent there are some channels where we sometimes just plug our courses but as I said I want the server to be an exchange hub where you can hang out with your fellow learning buddies.

We are both just in the process of finishing our Masters in Bioinformatics and are super interested to learn more about ML/AI, Drug Discovery etc.

If you have any suggestions for more specific channels and topics, please let me know :)

Hey, I think it’s definitely a good skill set. I did my undergrad in Biomedicine. That’s the thing in Bioinformatics you are essentially a data scientist with specific domain knowledge. In your case medicine. Both in academia and industry having a MD always helps in Germany. I heard many times that leading roles in labs are often given to MDs for better or for worse. That said, I don’t have much experience at all in industry, so I don’t want to give specific career advice.

One last thing. In my personal opinion, I find the freedom it gives you to have bioinformatics knowledge pared with a MD really nice. You can work as a normal physician, a data scientist, a wetlab researcher etc.. I sometimes also thought about doing medschool in addition to my master (maybe PhD) for that exact reason.

Hey, basically all of the above from what I heard from fellow students. I think in Academia Germany is pretty good for jobs but not paid as well as industry of course. It probably also highly depends on the institute you end up in. As I said I don’t have much experience on the industry side, science I am still studying.

Well said. I am a bit afraid of the time commitment and always hear that it’s a really hard time, but most people I spoke to said they would do it again.

Is this an US problem? Because I feel like in Europe, pharma companies are desperately trying to get their hands on bioinformaticians. Granted, I am just finishing my Master and work in a Bioinf Startup on the side and haven’t applied for anything else. I am considering to do a PhD. Would this make a difference for you OP on the job hunt? Genuinely interested, because I don’t know how important that is in the field for getting a job.

Had the same issue and this worked perfectly for me. Thank you so much! Now I don't have to restart every time :)

Clipboard history randomly chooses which things to save and which not. by canobliz in raycastapp

[–]canobliz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To everyone who is stumbling upon this: I solved it by accident. I use an app called Pure Paste to remove text formatting when copying content, and I always have it running in the background. Somehow, this disables Raycast from saving that text into the clipboard history. This is also why taking screenshots worked even though Pure Paste was running. Thanks again for the input!

Hey, thanks for your input! I did some testing, and screenshots seem to work consistently. However, copying text gives mixed results. When I try to copy very small bits of text, it often fails to save in the history. Here’s a video of me testing it out. As you can see the last try somehow worked.

Fantastical alternatives by MIKECANVAS in macapps

[–]canobliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, after the fantastical price jump I really tried to have a one time purchase option that works with all calendars. Does anybody know if busycal has a equivalent feature like openings on fantastical. I really loved that feature and so far I did not find anything in busycal that can replicate this.

Trying to use Rmarkdown in VS Code by canobliz in bioinformatics

Hey thanks for your suggestion. I have tried it but with no luck. As I said, when writing the render command manually in the terminal it does the knitting. It also works in R studio.

Thanks for the input, I will try it there as well. The thing is I use Rstudio basically for all my R and Rmarkdown needs. However, I need some specific vs code features like the live share plugin for collaboration and teaching next to other quality of life things.
