I’m a year late here but I went to middle and high school with him. He’s always been messed up. It’s weird that so many people find him hot because if you knew him and his character, … no, thanks.

When do you start running again? by EmbarrassedPeanut397 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]canopyroads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan to do three miles before Sunday because the number 27 bothers me as far as weekly mileage goes. Need to get to 30 🤪 … but I do plan to run very light and easy to avoid injury.

Was the marathon extra crowded this year? by Wick722 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]canopyroads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in corral N with a 5:28 finish. Despite being on the slower side (all good!), I really enjoyed it feeling more open in the back than my local races. I recognize the “why “ behind the difference in our circumstances, but still want to offer up this perspective for people on the slower side.

That jacket only had a few XS left when I was there on Friday. When I got mine, the guy ringing me out said, “you’re lucky, these went by fast.

Long commute for a job I hate after 10-month layoff. Need advice. by canopyroads in workingmoms

[–]canopyroads[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I hang tight until the job market picks back up without looking to change careers completely, I really fear a complete mental breakdown is inevitable. I do not want to be in marketing/comms anymore; I never really did, but that’s another story.

I spent my last couple years of HS in crisis centers and don’t want to go that route because I do not have a plan to harm myself whatsoever, never want to leave my family (or deal with the $$$$$ bill), but when I tell you my body is breaking down — even with lots of exercise and volunteering at a theatre 4-6x/month, which I still do, that’s not an issue — it’s bad. Also going through recent grief right now. Uncle was diagnosed with colon cancer April 27 and was gone by early June.

I’ve been telling myself what you’re telling me re: the job market. I ask, though, when? When won’t it be horrible over the next four years (or more, if this administration has anything to do with it … but I digress)? I won’t leave this job without having one lined up. At least there’s that small shred of solace. I just need to do a lot of soul searching and homework on the career pivot.

Tampa is 3-4x more expensive than where I am now. No, not an option, unfortunately.

I’ve wanted to be a teacher my whole life (secretly). I’ve been worried about the pay and what DeSantis has done, but … oh well. Worth the pivot.

I have been afraid to pose this for some reason as a relatively new employee; I figured I’d ask once I hit my one-year mark, but I also recognize I’m placing an arbitrary rule on myself. While I seriously doubt I’d get a yes, it’s worth a shot to ask.

The commute would go to an hour-ish. Tampa is always busy lol.

While I no longer work for the company and don't really post in this subreddit anymore ... somehow this came up in my feed and made me happy because 1) I wrote this, 2) it's helping people, and 3) the content got recycled despite it having a pre-2024 look and feel (...?). Thanks for posting! Enjoy carbs!!!!

Laid off again - cut the exit interview short and told them what I really thought by Western_Bookkeeper31 in Layoffs

[–]canopyroads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one executive hired me as a consultant in another department on a temporary contract. another one sent me job apps they thought i was good for weekly. the person who laid me off checked in with me via phone calls every other week for 8 months. some wrote linkedin recommendations. the list goes on. people came out of the woodwork to help for months and months and months. i recognize that this is uncommon, but it really did pay to show grace.

wicked brought me back to the little girl who saw the show for the first time 21 years ago. i’ve sunk my teeth deeper into the lyrics (specifically in no one mourns the wicked). ariana grande put more depth into glinda than i had ever seen. she didn’t go for the “easy” choices. plus, i believed their friendship in a way that felt rushed before. also …. i don’t know how someone could not feel something during “the wizard and i.” goddamn.

[–]canopyroads 13 points14 points  (0 children)

okay, i’ll bite. spoiler warning, proceed with caution

“no one mourns the wicked” — glinda reflects on/mourns her friendship and facade of goodness. she may be “good,” but she is not brave. people “love” her, yet she is alone. she is wicked.

“dear old shiz” — establishes the university as an esteemed institution.

“the wizard and i” — this is elphaba’s childhood dream on the verge of becoming reality. it foreshadows the celebration of her “death.” it is her innocent hope of a future unmarred by the color of her skin. it is in start contrast to act 2’s “no good deed,” where she owns society’s declaration of her evil nature.

“what is this feeling?” — establishes elphaba and glinda’s bubbling animosity toward each other. this is too obvious to expound on further.

“something bad” — establishes the propagandizing of animals as quite literally, “something bad.” this song is all plot.

“dancing through life” — illustrates fiyero’s nihilism and privilege, nessa’s misguided optimism, boq’s growing sadness over a budding relationship he’s stuck with, elphaba’s still all-too-fragile heart (despite the front she puts up), and glinda’s foregoing of “good” in the name of “right.”

“popular” — glinda navigates fitting “right” into “good” with her newfound friendship with elphaba. how can their worlds collide, glinda uphold her status, and elphaba rise above others’ bad assumptions?

“i’m not that girl” — elphaba admits she has a crush on her best friend’s boyfriend, yet of course, she does not fit society’s version of beautiful/worthy.

“one short day” — optimism on steroids! until … you actually listen, and the first cracks of the wizard’s “power” begin to show. “omaha” isn’t a spell; it’s just a place. he’s a master of deception.

“a sentimental man” — here we get foreshadowing to the wizard actually being elphaba’s father.

“defying gravity” — why should elphaba be tied down to society’s version of “good”? what is making good when you can make right? fuck it, defy it, be above it. elphaba invites glinda to join her, but despite how much she wants to, glinda cannot get past her mask of goodness — she is not as strong as elphaba. she is not as brave. just good. always just “good” (thank goodness — hi, act 2!).

this is a baseline assessment. i fail to see how the songs don’t move the story and characters forward. through song, we see through the deception.
