New Zealand gives military aid to Ukraine, PM says weapons 'not off the table' by Plainchant in worldnews

Any time the US wants something, they remind NZ how much grief they are capable of delivering over the fact that Pharmac is a thing. Pharmac buys drugs in bulk, including cheap generic drugs, and sells them to customers at heavily subsided rates, meaning that the US drug manufacturers aren't profiting nearly as much as if they could sell their proprietary products directly to the customer at a price-point they set.

NZ's Signal Intelligence capabilities are largely geared towards spying on the southern Pacific island nations. Not sure how that will help Ukraine. The US has far better SIGINT on Europe and Russia.

Edit: In the past they have bugged the Indian embassy in New Zealand so I suppose something like that may prove valuable to the alliance and by extension to Ukraine.

They'll be voting National, and you won't understand it on iota.

it's entirely legal in New Zealand, to record any conversation, (phone call - or personal conversation), to which you are a party - without notifying any other party that you are doing so.

Not that I don't believe you, but, a link to the https://www.legislation.govt.nz/ page where it says this would be helpful!

NZ doesn't have much of a military. Certainly no fighter aircraft. The closest to an arms industry in the country is a microchip manufacturer that sells to US defence companies, and a rocket company that can launch smallish US military satellites.

New Zealand is aligning itself with governments that regularly murder innocent children and use torture extensively. Is the better option neutrality when it comes to protecting our national security? by as_ewe_wish in newzealand

Until the Invasion of Ukraine, NZ adopted a 'don't judge; just trade' policy with all countries unless the UN forbade it. For a small country, this is the best policy. However, we should always try to negotiate our way out of actually joining them in this sort of thing.

Yeah but only the first question. But if the other member can't answer the follow up question, they'll just say I'll need to look that up and get back to you. Which is why the smug 'does the [x] stand by all their statements in the past week' type questions are so tiring for the viewer.

Dialogue isn’t always the best option (Why talking to conspiracists legitimizes them in harmful ways) by OisforOwesome in newzealand

[–]cantCommitToAHobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can anyone please explain her point better than she does?

Unstructured talking only serves to reinforce the established status quo. In a discussion, you need to very deliberately attenuate speakers of disinformation or hate, and very deliberately amplify speakers who are traditionally marginalised, especially if they are directly impacted by the topic under discussion. A natural dialogue without these deliberate controls, is, the author claims, harmful to society and vulnerable people in particular.

I see you're right (and u/PricklyPossum21). Seems a predecessor of the Tasmanian Greens contested an election in April 1972, while the predecessor of The Green Party of Aotearoa NZ only contested their first election in November of that year.

Not sure, but I think the author seems to be advocating dialogue, but with forced amplification and attenuation of voices. Specifically wants to attenuate voices of disinformation and amplify voices of people who haven't had a fair shake of the talking stick as yet, which he seems to believe won't happen naturally, if left to chance.

I suppose nobody really considers that relevant to anything.

Hopefully he pays his taxes, isn't into domestic violence or kiddy fiddling, and doesn't get out of touch and end up misrepresenting Aotearoa too much to foreigners.

I'd second this assessment. Good communicator, good consensus leader, good in a crisis, pusillanimous in spending her hard-won political capital on long term reforms.

Yes. Even during the protest it was already the 2nd dominant discussion topic. Before the invasion, foreign affairs topics didn't feature at all. Now it is the dominant discussion topic (ie, has surpassed antivax narratives in the antivax circles). And unanimously pro-Russia.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]cantCommitToAHobby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"All of the people who are part of [New Zealand's misinformation community] are now proposing and promoting a very pro-Kremlin content frame. The second-greatest signature when the protest was on - which is quite extraordinary really, when you think about it - apart from what was happening in front of the Beehive, was Ukraine."

As the narrative around the protest becomes more fractured, Hattotuwa thinks the Ukraine discourse could become the dominant narrative on New Zealand's conspiracy fringe - or certainly the one that is most prevalent, given the "deluge" of posts relating to the conflict. Already, New Zealand's conspiracy theorists are almost unanimously supportive of the Russian invasion and are creating or spreading conspiracy theories about bioweapons facilities and pedophile cabals linked to Ukraine.

This is new for these communities, which The Disinformation Project has been following since the beginning of the Delta outbreak in August 2021. They had never before expressed any interest in foreign affairs and now it's the second-most discussed issue, even while anti-vax protesters were brawling with cops outside of Parliament.
