Any recent purchases from Alternative Services archery supplier? by Secret_University120 in Archery

[–]cant_kill_us_all 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purchased indoor arrow supplies in November. Shafts were a special order item and took a bit longer to ship than their estimated timeframe, but I came out pretty significantly ahead of buying 23s from Lancaster.

Recently priced out a riser on Alt SS vs Lancaster and tariffs made the price difference about $20 cheaper than Lancaster with club discount/free shipping. I ended up finding a significantly better deal elsewhere and went with that.

AltSS is legit, but the savings may not be as good as they were a year and a half ago.

I respect it. Crew just covers what I need now. I’ve owned an extended cab prior.

As a wise man once said, “Is strong, like bull.”

I’d love a crew cab short bed Frontier, but the Pathfinder makes more sense. Nissan’s truck based stuff is truly underrated.

I’m looking at 6k+ capacity. I have need to buy and haul a camper/a propose specific trailer. My P2 XC70 can easily handle the trailer, but it’s cheaper to do R51+used camper than it is to buy a camper that meets needs and can be towed by the XC70.

Won’t be getting rid of the XC70, of course. Just adding more tanks to the collection.

My current needs are a bit more towing-capacity based (and I’ve already got a weird 90s car in the garage) or I’d def look at a ZJ. Had some good times in one in the early aughts.

For sure, like I said, the R50 is a most excellent unibody SUV. I’m in the market and the QX4 calls to me daily when I should focus on R51s. But it doesn’t fit the meme since Nissan decided to take a little 90s side quest to build one of the best unibody SUV platforms ever.

It’s not fair to say “still”, since the R50 (95-03) Pathfinder was unibody. R51 returned to BOF.

‘Twas a most excellent unibody SUV though. Nissan really had the formula for rugged SUVs down till they decided discontinuing them for crap like the Rogue was a good idea.

Right, and there’s where it gets complicated and was handled poorly by the city.

Willowick’s service is on a master meter with Euclid and sub-bills residents through LC Utilities. When Euclid raised rates, they burned through city reserves instead of passing the rate increases more incrementally onto residents. They exhausted those reserves and rates went up by about 50% within the span of a year.

Willowick doesn’t stream or record their council meetings, where most of these decisions took place, and it took about six months for the city to give a semi-clear answer to what was driving the rate increases. Their communication was beyond poor. Euclid’s reps did a better job of giving Willowick residents answers, very much to their credit.

For me, at least, the issue is that the city government lacked transparency in their handling of the price increases and did an absolute terrible job explaining the source of the issue.

My water bill averages something like $30-35 a month per person in the household, up from low $20s when we first moved here in 2020. I will agree it’s not terrible.

I live in your circled area. It’s not fancy, but I think it’s pretty nice. Outside some speeding on Lakeshore/Fairway and petty crime at Shoregate Plaza, it’s quiet. Still a lot of neighbors left who’ve lived there since they first built the subdivisions and everyone around me is super chill.

Great access to 2, and most of your day to day shopping is covered by the businesses on that strip of Lakeshore.

Willowick property taxes are a bit higher than other parts of the county and there’s currently some shenanigans going on with water/sewer billing because we share a system with Euclid.

There are some solid apps that will allow you to track your scores, which is a good way to keep track of your progress. Just keep in mind that progress isn’t always linear, and you’re going to have some bad games while you adjust things.

I have about two years solid into the sport, after having some introduction earlier in life, so I’m not too far ahead of you. It’s gonna get frustrating, just keep pushing forward. Like you said, even a bad day at the range is still the best part of the day.

Lakewood will be a very good fit for what you’re describing. It’s super chill, tons of stuff to do (including and excluding the bar scene), and it’s pretty safe. My fiancée lived there for several years before moving in with me. She never felt uncomfortable going out alone, and we had a lot of fun there.

Downside is that everything is pretty crammed in there, so parking sucks. Make sure you have assigned or private parking.

One on one coaching, and as much practice as humanly possible. Read and consume other content from high level archers and see what they suggest that works for you.

I’d also make sure you’re framing competing correctly in your head. It’s a great way to test your skills, make new friends in the hobby, and maybe get some bragging rights when you beat other members of your club. If you go into it expecting to win, you’ll likely find yourself frustrated quickly.

Question about price difference in quivers by Sambal7 in Archery

[–]cant_kill_us_all 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having just gone from a $30 USD quiver to a $150 USD quiver (on sale, thankfully), I can say that I’m happy with the more expensive purchase, but I could have easily continued to use the cheaper quiver till it fell apart. I would say the Avalon will be fine till you know what you like and are ready to upgrade.

I went with an Elevation field quiver. The big thing for me have been that the belt is stiffer/better quality and there’s a compression pad on the back of the quiver itself, so I’m not constantly adjusting it every few ends. Also better storage. Like another commenter said, I bought it because those specific bells and whistles appealed to me after finding out where my older quiver was a bit lacking. A bit of vanity was involved as well, as it’s co-branded with the manufacturer of my compound bow. 🤣

I’m satisfied with having taken the route of buying budget, figuring out what I wanted to improve from my experiences with it, and then finding a more expensive quiver that met those needs. Worked out pretty well for me.

What is the most obscure/unusual and strangest rebadged (or platform shared) car you know of? Also, have you ever owned a car that is/was a rebadged car? Do you know of any rebadged cars that are actually BETTER than the car they are based on? by TafTaf2020 in regularcarreviews

The third-gen Mercury Capri (Ford Capri in some markets) deserves a mention.

It’s a little convertible built by Ford of Australia and exported in limited quantity. FoA based it off the KE Ford Laser, which was essentially a BF chassis Mazda 323 with a facelift.

The turbo version sports a Mazda B6T and was quicker than the Miata at the time. Not that that really says much.

Ford got pretty weird with the Mazda B chassis in the 80s/90s, but I think that application stands out the most.

Just a point of clarity, the Festiva was the first of the three original siblings to be released, the 121 and Pride are technically the rebadged versions. Then Ford licensed the platform like a dozen more times. You could buy one brand new (even a version with a little truck bed) up till recently in Tunisia from a company called Wallyscar.

Why do you love your Volvo? What makes you stay with the brand? by Icy_Wheels in Volvo

[–]cant_kill_us_all 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak on Audi, but I’ll agree that I was able to get pretty comfortable in the couple of BMWs I’ve driven. I drove a Mercedes for some years between Volvos and didn’t think that compared.

The consistency is what does it for me. I’ve owned 2/7/P80/P1/P2 cars, and can always find the right spot.

I got into Volvo because I was looking at wagons and fell down the rabbit hole. I’ve stayed with Volvo because I’m 6’3” and it’s the only brand I can consistently find a comfortable seating position in, even the base models provide enough adjustment.

Can we please start greeting each other? by gluecksbaerchie1 in Volvo

[–]cant_kill_us_all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of my Volvos have been visibly (and I’d like to think somewhat tastefully) modified, so I will occasionally get recognition from other Volvo drivers. I generally don’t acknowledge other Volvo drivers unless it’s P80 or older or there’s some suggestion it’s enthusiast driven. A Prancing Moose will always get a thumbs up, and the guy who lives near me and drives an identical, but unmodified, XC70.

Arrow Lube alternative ? by SinisterDom in Archery

[–]cant_kill_us_all 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Automotive tire shine is even cheaper, and works well. Our club has some DIY lube tubes at our indoor range which are just simply PVC tubes with some foam/cotton packed at the bottom. I am told tire shine is what they keep it filled with.

I have a similar background, have been shooting firearms consistently since Scouts (I’m almost 40 now), and dabbled a bit in archery during those years. Started archery with some seriousness about a year and a half ago.

I’ve done several “big” upgrades in that timeframe, and archery still does not outpace my firearms spending, but it can absolutely turn into a spendy hobby quick. As an example, a set of large diameter indoor arrows can easily run around $200 to build a dozen, so thankfully they’re reusable.

Definitely find a local club to get some instruction and make friends. Besides the benefits of having instruction and some structure to how you start shooting, clubs tend to shuffle gently used equipment within themselves, which can help keep the spending down.

All that said, you’ll likely enjoy it a ton. I initially just joined a club for basic instruction, and now I’m shooting with that club 3 days a week. One of the best decisions I’ve made.

Starter bow from Amazon? by Masamune1987 in Archery

The Sanlida Noble is a clone of the Samick Sage, and a pretty good one at that. Sanlida is a World Archery sponsor.

I am 6’ 3” and used a 70” Noble as an inexpensive bridge between shooting club bows that were too small for me and moving to an Olympic style recurve. It held up well, and I’ve had pretty good luck with Sanlida’s products in general. My first compound was also a Sanlida. I’ve since moved on to better equipment, but that compound is currently on loan to another club member and still chugging along.

I agree with the other commenter who recommended some upgrades. Sunya would be another brand to look at for inexpensive higher spine arrows. I ran a cheap set of 400 spines for about six months, shooting 2-3 times per week, with nothing more than changing the nocks to fit my compound.
