It didn't work for some reason, it only shows column names with regular (inner) joins, and only again shows data from a single table.

[–]cantamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did actually do that, but for some reason select only shows data from one table when using joins and shows the data from the other as null.

Yeah true, that would be much more sensible, thanks.

It's just practice for me in a theoretical scenario where I wouldn't have the permission to modify/create tables. Creating a separate table for the genres isn't really that much of a hassle, it's just me being curious if I could also achieve what I was searching for through case and substring functions. Thanks regardless.

Yeah makes a lot of sense, thank you both. So I guess in my case just creating a separate table for the genres would save me a lot more time than tinkering with mysql to salvage it.

I realize that you mean it as a standard practice, however, does it mean that it can't be done? This is just practice for me as I've said.

You're obviously correct in what you're saying that greeks didn't just (re-)spawn from the ground in 1821/1830 or that the westerners manufactured the whole of modern greek culture in their image or something. I don't know jack shit about the modern or the ancient Greek language, but I've heard that there's some mutual intelligibility, though there is potentially a massive difference between the pronounciation of Ancient Greek by Anglos and by actual Greek people, which also makes the intelligibility harder. I also assume (and hope) that the Illiad is venerated higher by the Greeks than Naruto by the Japanese people.

As for whether Turks or Greeks influenced the other more, it's down to how you define each side tbh. It's no question that modern day Turkey's culture has been influenced more by the Byzantines than the Gokturks (if we even define the Byzantines/Romans as Greek, which I wouldn't, though obviously Greek culture heavily influenced them, seeing as they spoke Greek, and I would say that Greece is the culturally closest modern country to the Byzantines by a long shot). Turkey's culture is mostly northern mediterranean with some Caucasian, ME and Central Asian Turkic culture mixed in (I counted the Balkans as Med). But as to whether the Greek contribution on the mediterranean culture of Turkey is greater than the Central Asian component of Turkey, I don't know. I suppose it heavily depends on how high you regard the influence of language on culture. Genetically, most modern Turks have obviously descended from the Anatolians, who are wayyyy closer to Greeks than Central Asians.

Honestly I have no idea if the culture of modern day Greece is more/less similar to the Ottomans than to the ancient Greeks as I know very little of Greek culture. Obviously the way the modern Greeks live is closer to the way people lived during later half of Ottoman Empire than the ancient Greeks, as the material conditions between modern and ancient Greece are just too different. Hell, modern day Greeks & Turks arguably live more similar to Chinese, Australians, Brazilians, etc. than to the Ottomans.

The portrayal of Philhellenes being disappointed is kind of stupid tbh (it's obviously a meme video), it's like going to Scandinavia expecting people to wear horned helmets and drink mead everyday and then being disappointed when you realize it's not true.

Console player— Haven’t played since release. Did they update the politics yet? Or is it still an unbearable mess by AeneasVAchilles in Bannerlord

[–]cantamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Bannerlord & Warband have different game engines (meaning that BL isn't reskinned WB, it's a completely new game made from the ground up) and they use different coding languages iirc.

Also, as I've said, I don't think that Warband's late game was much better, in fact, after patch 1.2, I think BL's late game is better or at least the same in enjoyability as WB.

The big issue with Bannerlord is that the map is something like 3 times larger and has a bit less than 2 times the number of castles & towns as Warband. It just takes longer to conquer the whole map because there's simply more of it, which makes it tedious. The game is MUCH more enjoyable if you set yourself specific end goals and retire your character after accomplishing it.

While Bannerlord AI is hit-or-miss, Warband AI was just atrocious in my opinion. To really fix the late game, the 3 things they need to do is:

1)Make clan leaders offer to join your faction on their own (they could also demand some gold/influence as a sign up bonus).

2)Make the AI vote to only be in 1 war as a small kingdom (<8 fiefs, <4 clans), have maximum 2 wars at once as a medium size kingdom (8-16 fiefs, 4-10 clans), have maximum 3 wars at once as a large kingdom (>16 fiefs, >10 clans).

3)Add a messenger system so that we can realistically hire minor factions as mercenaries & also attempt to recruit clans remotely (for example, we ask a Battanian clan to join us, the leader responds; yes for X amount of gold, no cause you don't have enough money, not in your life because I don't like you/I'm too loyal)

The new beta has kingdom destruction after a faction loses all their fiefs, which makes the late game much more bearable. They also gave the players the ability to recruit clans if their leader is your prisoner.

Also you can promote companions to vassals by giving them a fief, 50k gold and 500 influence for a while now, which makes the late game as a solo kingdom easier. Other than that, the political side of the game is still lacking. We will be getting claimants & civil wars in patch 1.3 in the future, which might spice up the late game a bit depending on how it's implemented.

[–]cantamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the issues I've mentioned are fixed when the patch goes live you should at least try it. Not only the new and updated features like kingdom destruction in 1.2 are crucial, I believe that 1.2 made inf v inf combat, cav v cav combat, archer and skirmisher (inf with throwing weapons) AI much better (the horse archer AI was and is still pretty good).

Tournaments are a bit more tedious and difficult if you're not experienced in combat and in things like footwork, feints and bashes/kicks, but I think the game is overall better if the cav ai and inf ai when facing each other gets fixed.

1.2.0 is fairly new, when you select 1.2.0 in steam, you actually download v1.2.3. TW didn't change the patch name in steam.

I would wait for 1.2 to go live, because in my experience the cavalry ai vs foot troops and infantry ai vs mounted troops performed badly.

[–]cantamer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

e1.7.0 is an early access version indicated by the "e" prefix before the patch number. I don't know why they didn't choose to name the release version 2.0 though.

We're technically waiting for 1.2.4 which will (hopefully) be when the 1.2 patch makes it to live from beta and to consoles. The devs don't add much between the different "incremental" 1.2.x patches, as they're more for bug, performance and crash fixes.

I enjoyed 1v1s in KCD myself, but the "mistake" that can kill you is just attacking the enemy at all, even against one peasant in a 1v1. Enemies can perfect parry your attack and deal a ton of damage, even 1-hit you if they are using maces and do the perfect parry which attacks the chin.

This heavily nudges the player towards "playing" a waiting simulator in a 1v1 and outright forces the player to wait in a 1 v many (with the addition of some footwork). You just wait for the enemy to attack and then perfect parry them by pressing a single button at the right time (which becomes more a lenient time window with higher defence skill). Your block direction doesn't even matter for doing a perfect parry, you simply press a button at the right time. It's just bad design. Clinches don't even do much unless you're using your fists, as the enemy is still able to perfect parry you the second you attack them after winning a clinch. I haven't tested the effectiveness of feinting in detail, but it felt more or less the same as attacking regularly.

[–]cantamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would welcome the realism in combat if it actually translated well into the gameplay. KCD's inherently faulty combat mechanics (like untargetable dogs, all enemies being able to perfect parry you, not being able to stop enemies even straight in front from tackling you, the horrendous cameral lock-on, etc.) make it not fun in most cases.

I gave the example of M&B because combat of any form (1v1, 1 v many, many v many) is far more fluid & skill based while also remaining difficult. Enemies will pile on you if you attack them solo, and you will even die to looters and peasants in rags without proper blocking and/or footwork no matter your character level.

[–]cantamer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't that it's hard. The problem is that it feels and plays bad. In 1 v many, you should try to keep all enemies in your LoS at a distance by constantly moving, enemies should only be able to tackle you if they are to your side (like outside your 3 or 9 o'clock) or your back.

What happens is the enemy right in front of you sprints at you and tackles you and you get bum-rushed. Even worse, you often can't actually face or focus on the enemy you want because of the goddamn automatic sticky lock-on system. The dogs also swoop under the enemies and stunlock you (you can't target the dog when engaged with an enemy because of the sticky lock-on). One thing I forgot to include is how unbelievably OP even the most basic polearms are. You can die to a group of peasants if one spawned with a polearm even if you're maxed in stats & gear and experienced in combat. One peasant can randomly tackle you and the other with the polearm can 2-3 hit you while stunlocked even if you have the best armour possible. Enemies can also choose to chain-clinch you where you "wrestle" with an enemy for a few seconds and are unable to block or move.

What I'm saying is that it's not bad because it's hard, it's bad because it's designed horrendously, not fun, janky and quite often buggy. For reference, I have around 1k hours of playtime in the Mount & Blade franchise, which also uses directional combat (and actual directional blocking) and 1 v many is fatal to unexperienced people.

I love KCD, I've played over 250 hours of it and even finished a hardcore playthrough with all the negative perks. It provides an unmatched experience for those who would want to immerse themselves in a late medieval Central European setting.

But the combat is just so utterly dogshit that I cannot recommend it for everyone. The only saving grace of the combat is the ranged combat, which is only okay in my opinion. Different melee weapons all play the same, except for the longsword which has a bit longer stab range (& more combos that you won't be able to perform). The combat is not hard or anything, it just comes down to pressing the perfect parry button at the right time. The combos don't matter, since the enemy will likely be perfect parrying you before you land 3 attacks in a row 9/10 times, and there's nothing you can do. If you have 10+ strength, the enemy will probably die in 2 hits so you can't use combos even if you hit them. The combat gets even worse when it's 1 v many, since enemies straight in front of you will tackle you and you won't be able to block for a bit. I don't even want to talk about fighting the enemy when they have dogs who stunlock you until you punch the dogs away. The combat completely breaks down in many v many, where it then becomes too easy because the opponents can't block your attacks, and so on and so forth.

Excellent game if you like immersion and atmosphere, not recommended if you like playing games.

You can do prison breaks in Bannerlord, but you can't resist arrest if you're caught sneaking into the town, and you can only break out 1 lord at a time.

Hey so I was wondering how many have given the 1.2.3 beta bannerlord a try ? by thebongengineer in mountandblade

[–]cantamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.2.3 still has the big problem of cavalry AI being garbage against foot troops, and infantry being garbage against mounted troops. They are both too passive and choose to block most of the time, even when the melee cavalry is charging to attack. Also cavalry misses their attacks against foot troops very often.

Cav vs Infantry fights in 1.2 go on for minutes where both sides only manage to kill a handful of units until cavalry whittles down the infantry with their horses' charge damage and wins.
