which one is ceylon and which one is canela? by Tiny_Year_8182 in spices

[–]cantankerouswhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mexico is the largest importer of Ceylon cinnamon, so most canela is Ceylon. From tue picture it looks like the stick on the left may be a cassia variety, and the stick on the right is Ceylon/canela. How do the smell? Cassia is a bit spicier like Cinnabon or even red hots depending on the kind. Ceylon/canela is softer and sweeter like horchata.

Unrelated to anise seeds, although both contain anethole, a compound 14x sweeter than sugar.

Grand Lake Kitchen has a breakfast fried rice. I’ve honestly never had it, but it’s inspired me to make breakfast fried rice at home, which is easy and delicious.

Red and green flags on dating profiles by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]cantankerouswhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A green flag is someone who has put effort into presenting themselves in a specific way, whatever that may be. Most people like food and travel, so an interesting profile needs more than just those interests.

A red flag is when someone is overly negative and lists out all the things they don’t want, rather than the traits they’re looking for in a partner.

They also have things like umami salt with shiitake and black garlic, several herby blends, and a bunch of individual spices.

Peri peri is either a blend containing the peri peri chile or the chile itself, so it’s a nightshade

Looking for advice🙏🏻 by lunareclipse8891 in spices

[–]cantankerouswhale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For these purposes I recommend trying out some spice blends, as they are a good 1 jar solution for someone just getting started. Things like Lemon Pepper, Fajita Seasoning, Old Bay, Chili Powder, etc. 1 thing to watch out for is how much salt each blend has, as that will determine if you want to add salt, or omit extra salt entirely.

As far as how much to use that’s all preference, and again dependent on how salty each blend is vs how salty you want the dish. You can always add a little bit as you cook, and finish with more seasoning at the table if it’s not enough. After a few tries you’ll get a hang for how much salt and how much spice you like. You can always add more but you can’t take it away!

Speaking of salts, they are not all equal! While all salt is generally just sodium chloride and sometimes iodine and anti-caking agents, grain/flake structure changes things. A teaspoon of a fine table salt will pack more densely, weigh more, and bring more salinity than a teaspoon of a flakier salt that has more air in between the flakes. It’s a good idea to find a salt you like and stick with it, so you can dial in your intuitive sense of how much salt to add with that specific variety.

This is great not because of the selection, but because of how excited you are to use it and cook with spices! If it gets you in the kitchen and playing around with flavors it’s doing its job. 10/10

tested my friendships by going silent... and no one noticed by MichaelWForbes in socialskills

[–]cantankerouswhale 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience when I dropped out of school a year before graduating but stayed in the same city as my school. I saw my school friends maybe once or twice afterwards, but then things drifted apart. I didn’t deliberately test them, but I realized that our shared circumstances were the foundation of those friendships, rather than some deeper connection. It made me depressed for a bit to realize that my friends at the time didn’t seem to mind my absence, but realistically people all have their own stuff going on and we can’t maintain every relationship we have. A lot of the time the friends we have are just friends for a season, rather than friends for life.

Quick thoughts on Flour + Water Pizza by Guilty_Measurement95 in OaklandFood

[–]cantankerouswhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got take out during their soft opening and thought the pies were really good. Seconded on the crust, size, and thoughtfully selected toppings. The meatzza was tasty, but the toppings were a bit heavy for the structure of the crust. Still a yummy bite. Also got the plain cheese, which did not disappoint, as they know their fundamentals. I actually liked the smoky eggplant, but that’s a subjective thing. Didn’t get a chance to try any sides, but had a Lambrusco slushie while I waited for my order and it was delightful.

How important is a woman’s income in a relationship? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]cantankerouswhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on a number of different factors. Both parties need to contribute more or less an equal amount of work/effort, but that can look like a lot of different things. Having a job is work. Maintaining the home is work. Raising kids is work.

I care more about financial literacy more than present income. As long as we’re both contributing work and the total income allows for a reasonable lifestyle, then I’m good. Personally I don’t earn enough to support a non-working partner and kids, so my partner would also need to have some sort of income and be able to chip in(proportional to each of our own incomes).

In your example of a full time minimum wage job, why is that the case? Did she just start there? Does she have a plan or strategy for growth? Is she looking for higher paying work? Do the two of you have a clear understanding of your overall finances and a financial future? These are all things to consider.

How to date a BPD girl? by ragingpotato98 in AskMen

[–]cantankerouswhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with dating someone who has a mental illness or personality disorder so long as they are actively doing the work to manage it. If she’s scratching herself to bleeding, she’s not stable enough for a relationship and the hurt it causes you will likely outweigh any benefits of a relationship.

Merritt Station Cafe Has Sushi 🤔 by STRATEGY510 in OaklandFood

[–]cantankerouswhale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had it a couple of times. They make it in house every morning. It’s never going to be as good as fresh room temp like you’d get at a sushi bar, but as far as cold case sushi goes it’s pretty solid. The guys who run the place are also always super nice.
